I'm not going to read the article, but I'll bet it's someone who has no problem with GTA having you beat nuns with a pipe.

I have this feeling that Cave Johnson from Portal would have fit in well in Rapture.  He seems like these types a fair bit too.  "Don't care what it costs!  Do it, and blame someone else!"

I don't support violent video games for children regardless.

I love both Bioshock I and II.  Awesome games and I would not describe the violence as going too far but I would not want my children to be allowed to buy it.

Well that settles it then, if the far-right hates it then I'm picking it up on release day.

/Was getting it on release day anyway
//But now that'll carry even more satisfaction

The problem is that the representatives of this philosophy, the Founders, are straw men. Racist, xenophobic, religious fanatics, they are progressive caricatures of conservatives writ large, stripped of any subtlety; nothing but ugly monsters full of naked aggression and violent bigotry.

That... sounds pretty accurate of the social conservative wing of politics.

The setting of the game itself is a twisted vision of idealized turn-of-the-century America; Levine calls Columbia "the memory of America that people think existed that never really actually quite existed." White picket fences and star-spangled banners are intertwined with posters spewing extremist propaganda such as, "Patriots! Arm Thyself! Against the Foreigners & Anarchists!" and "We must all be vigilant to ensure the purity of our people!

That actually sounds like a pretty accurate description of late 19th Century America.

Why don't the Breitbart folks just develop their own video games? I mean, I'm sure they've got the money.

Before he died, wasn't Andrew Breitbart talking about how conservatives must grab a bigger piece of American culture?

What is stopping them?

Stupid parents just ignore the big "M/17+" on the covers (which the Bioshock games have) and get whatever the kids want.  Then the really dumb ones whine about what their kids are playing.  Fark 'em!

Well you see, they don't actually make anything.  Rather, they take elements of culture that others have created and biatch about it in exchange for advertising revenue.  But you knew that.

The comments were adorable as usual.  Chock full of "I really enjoyed the first two Bioshock games, but I'm not going to buy this because they accidentally the whole game and furthermore comma"

Do they not realize that the antagonist of the Bioshock games and Rapture itself were sendups of Ayn Rand's philosophies?

Well, by the end of Bioshock, Andrew Ryan and Andrew Breitbart have more in common than a first name.

Now, if this article's author would hand me that golf putter, I'd kindly help him out.

I watched a mother buy her 11 year old "Bulletstorm" at GameStop. The clerk said "You do know this is rated M for graphic violence, strong languge, drug/alcohol references, etc. etc." She looks at her kid, kid whines "MOOOOOOOOM" and she goes "Ok fine." She left and I asked him how often that happens. He said it was in the single digits, and only because the game had "partial nudity or sex".

I read the article. The author is basically afraid a group of artists and storytellers is going to say something he doesn't like. Whatever.

It's like they've never heard of the "Know Nothings."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_Nothing

The platform of the American Party called for:
Severe limits on immigration, especially from Catholic countries.
Restricting political office to native-born Americans of English and/or Scottish lineage and Protestant persuasion.
Mandating a wait of 21 years before an immigrant could gain citizenship.
Restricting public school teacher positions to Protestants.
Mandating daily Bible readings in public schools.
Restricting the use of languages other than English.

So the Tea Party has pretty much adopted that platform, but changed "Catholic" to "Hispanic" and "Protestants" to "Christians."

If the Tea Party sees themselves in this game, then they have some serious issues to deal with inside themselves.

Sure! I read Atlas Shrugged, and it changed my life!  It was about trains, or rape. Or rape trains.

Look, I have to admit that I skimmed a few bits, but I'm absolutely certain there were rape trains.

The original Bioshock was as close to legitimate art as I've ever seen in a videogame. Absolutely brilliant concept all over.

It makes me wonder how many of the execs at the game company knew it was a commentary on the idiocy of Ayn Rand when the idea got the greenlight. I suspect that if it were presented as such to a group of boardroom pencil pushers, the game never would have gotten off the ground.

How are the lab boys supposed to figure out which mix of random chemicals from our warehouse results in the Fountain of Youth when the EPA is always on my ass about "Pollution" and "Mutated hobo corpses"? This isn't the America I grew up in; the America where you could tunnel out a whole salt mine if you had enough money. Cave Johnson, we're done here."

I don't know how "children" get violent games without the parents there anyway.

If you aren't the one taking your kid to buy games (which is obviously the best solution), then just pay attention to what they play.

If they're playing games that are objectionable, just take them away - you're bigger than them.

Heh.

Atlas Shrugged:  Part 1

Estimated budget:  $20,000,000

Gross (May 2011):  $4,563,873

That damn liberal math, making our projexts unprofitible!

I was thinking the same thing.

You see, Randian policy will always be hijacked and exploited, turning us all in to subhuman mutants that spend all day hunting children to take their essence.
