"The city is trying to shut us down," read the page, which carries the popular skater tag-line "Skate or Die."

Yes, they are trying to keep you off public roads. It's hard to blame them.

Especially since the follow car was, like, RIGHT behind the guy.

Shostie: That video made me nervous.

Especially since the follow car was, like, RIGHT behind the guy.

Even if he dumped, they most likely could have stopped and not run him over. He'd continue pinwheeling down the road at 68 MPH for a while. If he flew under one of the many cars coming the other way, it would have been more serious.

If you are on the road, you have to obey the traffic laws.

Because People in power are Stupid: [1.bp.blogspot.com image 400x120]

Destruction of property or whatever else you want to call the damage that skateboards do to park benches, concrete walls, etc is a crime though.

One day, I was at a concert at Giant's Stadium. Me and a buddy of mine were tooling around the parking lot on roller blades. (Always good fun.) We got the bright idea to go up to the second level. If you've ever seen the stadium, you'd know that it has 4 huge ramps that go from there to the ground.

So, our net bright idea was to skate down the ramp! Fortunately neither one of us fell. If we had, we'd have been in the hospital for sure! I've never gone that fast on blades before, and never will again. I coasted a few hundered yards in the parking lot before I got the nerve to even try to stop.

Then my skates burst into flames and melted.
//Not really...

My attempt at a land-speed record on a cheapo banana style skateboard ended with me flying off a bike path and becoming one with a barbed wire fence. Apparently anything over 20 mph sent the thing into full-on wobble and buck mode.

That was the day I gave up skateboarding.

True story: I got a speeding ticket for doing 68 in a 55. On a bike. Highway 95 down into Lewiston, Idaho made it all possible.

I thought I would win in court. I was wrong.

Last summer the Lieutenant Governor of Idaho got a speeding ticket on US 95 near Lewiston. I guess the cops there are merciless.

+1. I think getting a similar ticket might go on my list of things to do once in a lifetime.

/ Although I think I'll just pay the ticket and not try the court.

FTFA: "Toward the bottom of the run, he is seen throwing up his hands in jubilation after a GPS system strapped to his foot showed he had clocked up 68 mph in a 37 mph zone, local media said."

No. No, they didn't.

Seriously, America. Are you that terrified of the metric system that you're now pretending it doesn't exist at all?

Local media didn't say he clocked anything in a 37 mph zone, because there's no such thing as a 37 mph zone. 37mph is 59.54kph, so quite clearly it was a 60kph zone. What the hell ever happened to inserting your cute, backwards translation in parentheses after the real information, NBC?

The speeds longboards can reach are amazing. 70 mph is not rare at all, but you have to account for the wind resistance from your giant balls, but they help add to your momentum...

First time I ever heard of it was when I read about the hottie in Tome Petty's 'Free Fallin' video... She would regularly hop on a longboard and fly down the road at 70 mph... I , of course, was instantly in love. :-)

2013-02-08 01:49:13 PM
I say let him keep trying to break that speed record. The problem is sure to fix itself.

Further, it was no GPS milestone. He threw his hands up in the air because he set off the speed camera.

ack! 1970's department store skateboards were almost as horrible as home-made wood w/ metal skate wheels boards. teeny tiny low quality pieces of crap which the rider had almost no control over. TTBOMK bike helmets & pads didn't even exist back then. we were stupid enough to repeatedly go down the steepest, longest hill roads in town. it is amazing the risk you put yourself in when you're young.

anyone remember the summer Action Park had these combo skateboard/skiing thingies you would take down the steep rock and grass ski slope hill on a sunny afternoon? how that death park stayed in business is an education in beating lawsuits and avoiding paying taxes while paying stoned kids shiat wages to run your business for you. infarkingcredible. i'm surprised that place didn't eliminate an entire generation of No.NJ kids.

One of my friends from high school is sponsored by Bustin Boards and travels the hemisphere doing longboard races, they regularly go 50-70 mph, depending on the hill and event. The roads are usually closed. Usually. Here's a 110km/h run in South America (about 68 mph).

Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 60's. There was a short, steep hill in the street just down from our house where one day the city conveniently dumped a load of dirt for some reason. My older brother immediately got the idea of rolling down the hill on his bike and attempting a full gainer off the dirt pile.

He didn't make it, but stiches and a broken nose later he had massive street cred with all the kids in the neighborhood.
