CSB time: I once worked at a college radio station, and I made the rookie mistake of not reading the PSAs before actually announcing them on air.  This PSA was about child abuse prevention, and then I cued up the next song with a, "and now, here is Entombed, with 'Albino Whipped in Black.'"

2013-02-08 11:45:59 AM
Ken. By Request Only.

But really, I've heard Butthole Surfers on the radio since 1991. Foetus (sadly), not so much. But why bother having a metal station when you can't be 'evil'? And it's not like they would be playing Bieber anyway. And further - it's ok to put out this memo with all these 'evil' words, which are now stuck in your head, but you can't SAY them? Whoever wrote this should be fired...or at least have their noggin examined.

2013-02-08 11:45:59 AM
It's all fairly ridiculous Roman Catholic university stuff, but you'll be quick to forgive once you realize that mentioning Nickleback and/or Justin Bieber will result in a DJ's immediate termination.

As it should be.

/Just looked up some of these bands

doczoidberg: Anal C*nt is my favorite.

Look them up.

IIRC they had some rather amusing song titles as well.  Unfortunately their creativity didn't extend to their actual music, as most songs I heard were intelligible screaming along with a shiatty drummer and overly distorted power chords.  The only exception being "I just saw the gayest guy on earth", which was just vocals and what sounded like a didgeridoo.  But I guess with a name like Anal coont you can't really expect them to take themselves seriously.

Also, if you have an official list of bands whose name you can't even speak on air, let alone play, how do you justify calling yourself 'pirate radio'?  That's about as far away from 'pirate radio' as you can get.

There is this magical thing called "life" that some if us have, you may know it better referred to as "IRL" and those of us who have it, or at least a little bit of it, don't actually spend every waking hour trolling every website available on the whole of the inner tubes. I SO knew that Morbid Angel would be on that list.  And that really sucks, because they are one of the best bands in that whole genre of music.

Their "Blessed Are the Sick" is still one of the most awesome things ever recorded.

I wonder something...  I haven't listened to SOU in a LONG time.  But back in my trash metal days, in the late 80s or so, it was always a local band's primary goal to get their music played on that station.  They were the top of the scene.  Is it still like that?

//My band's name was Belial.  Maybe that explains why we never got played...

2013-02-08 12:08:56 PM
Oh, I just knew it was going to be WSOU. This is my favorite local station and they play great stuff.  Weirdest station for a Catholic school ever, but it generally rocks.  Just looked at what was on recently and it seems to be an hour of unusually clean vocals.  You can keep Morbid Angel, they suck.

Testament "Into the Pit"
Motorhead "The Game"
H2O "ROLE MODEL"
Dream Theater "PANIC ATTACK"
P.Jeans "Romanticize Me"
Nightwish "Nemo"
Chimara "Born In Blood"
Megadeth "Rattlehead"
Black Label Society "Death March"
Funeral for a Friend "Best Frieds And Hospital Beds"

You keep your opinion to yourself there, Chubby!

I have a good, and related story, though...

I used to work for a place that allowed you to print custom messages on candy, through a website.  Since it wasn't uncommon for people to write all kinds of crazy shiat on them, we had to have a "blcklist" of words that the software would catch, and inform the user they couldn't print that.
So management sent me an email of the list of words that couldn't be used.  That has got to be the funniest f'n email I've ever gotten.

CSB in the most cringe-worthy band name I've come across:

Was listening to the local college radio a number of years ago and the DJ was doing concert schedules at the local bars. One of the bars had a list of metal bands that were playing on a Saturday. It went something like this*:
DJ: "This Saturday at bar X we have a strong lineup of metal bands with Sucking Chest Wound, Doomslayers, Arctic Darkness and...
...and...
...and...
(Clears throat)
Queef Huffer
(Muttered aside) god I feel dirty just saying that."

I have laughed for years about that, and the term Queef Huffer one I have adopted for use in special circumstances.

"Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains and "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails immediately come to mind. By my account, a rock station would be incomplete without them. Or are those "too soft" to play on a metal station, anyways?

poot_rootbeer: I suspect no one at Gawker has actually listened to WSOU.  Despite Seton Hall's religious connections, it's the heaviest metal-format radio station I've ever tuned in.

CSB: I spent three and a half semesters at Gannon University's WERG (98-02), and it was the glory days of radio IMO. In all that time only one kid got thrown off and that's only because the bishop happened to be listening in that particular time when the kid went on a cluster f-bombing run.

My daughter was wearing her Nashville Pussy shirt to middle school one day. The school had a rule that the kids couldn't wear band shirts but they usually let her slide because we both work in the music industry. Yes even back then she had a paying summer job with a national tour.

A teacher noticed her Nashville Pussy shirt and sent her to the principal. When he asked her if she knew what her shirt said she read it to them ... Nashville Pussy , Olde Time Rock and Roll. When she was asked why she was wearing that shirt she told them that the band were friends of hers and that she would be glad to get them in the show for free next time they came to town. The teacher asked how my daughter could respect a band with such a bad name. My daughters reply was that they rocked and have been nominated for a Grammy. Do you know anyone nominated for a Grammy? My daughter knows both nominees and winners. Then when they asked if I knew about the shirt she said "of course, my Dad has one just like it."

Later in the year we snuck her science teacher and his family into OZZFEST and got them a meet/greet with Ozzy and Sharon.

Rotting Christ gave an interview a few years ago talking about this.  They have released a dozen albums, and had come to regret picking that name when they were teens. They wanted to change their name, but their label nixed the idea and said they would be responsible for any licensing stuff like t-shirts that still had the name on them.  So, Rotting Christ it is.

I'll add to everyone else here saying that WSOU was a great radio station in the early 90s (haven't heard it since then), but its main playlist rotation was heavy metal, so it's not like the possibility of them playing an Anal coont or Goatwhore song is preposterous. WSOU introduced me to bands like Overkill, Testament, Manowar. I would curse at the radio every time my favorite DJs were preempted for Seton Hall basketball games.

I don't think I'll ever understand college radio GMs.  I know they are generally stupid students (it took me four tries just to get our GM to arrive to give me the FCC quiz), but putting heavy metal at the most ridiculous times seems to be a widespread thing.

Still, the local prisoners enjoyed the show, and they were often the only audience, I think.  They'd call collect, so you'd hear, "Will you accept this call from ... PLAY CANNIBAL CORPSE! -click-"

Fun.

I think I still have some of the calls I got recorded. Was so tempted to put them on the air but they told me not to.

We usually had our metal hours at something like Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 'til noon.  Incredibly awful hours, and I always had the feeling of speaking to dead space.  I think I had a total audience of maybe a dozen prisoners.

\Bluegrass and folk was scheduled for Friday nights, from 8 til midnight

CapeFearCadaver: Onkel Buck: CapeFearCadaver: whizbangthedirtfarmer: I don't think I'll ever understand college radio GMs. I know they are generally stupid students (it took me four tries just to get our GM to arrive to give me the FCC quiz), but putting heavy metal at the most ridiculous times seems to be a widespread thing.

Were you at WKNC? I liked that Penitentiary Rock show, where the DJ would read letters from guys in prison and play theior requests

Nope. Small college in Greensboro. Didn't even go to school there. WQFS.

You weren't around here when WKNC was awesome.... late 80s early 90s, couldn't beat it. They played a My Dying Bride DEMO! of Beautiful Bells. Like, pre-signing. Still have that show on cassette.

You going to the Blatant Disarray show at the Lincoln?

J Bag: I'll add to everyone else here saying that WSOU was a great radio station in the early 90s (haven't heard it since then), but its main playlist rotation was heavy metal, so it's not like the possibility of them playing an Anal coont or Goatwhore song is preposterous. WSOU introduced me to bands like Overkill, Testament, Manowar. I would curse at the radio every time my favorite DJs were preempted for Seton Hall basketball games.

Still is. My first taste of Five Finger Death Punch and Psychostick came from them. They still play Manowar and Testament, too, though not add heavily as I'd like. Just a touch to much cookie monster metal for me, but the rest of NYC radio is terrible.

President Merkin Muffley: In other news from two day old Reddit posts. I've never seen an erection the likes of which Fark has for Gawker media. Except of course for the erection that Gawker has for ripping off Reddit posts.

I saw the Internet first!

Meh.. I DJ'd for WTSR mid to late 80's and had a punk show.. 10pm-2am... we had to specify a format "punk rock" and got chewed out if we played anything BUT punk!! Also, we didnt have a blacklist of bands, and we could play any band/song we wanted.. the only time we had to be nice was when we read back band names and or songs, funny thing was, I always substituted fark for the naughty bits..

/we now return you to our regularly scheduled programming

What?!?!? No mention of Machinegun Fellatio? (the link is safe, but some of those vids are NOT safe for work)

What, no Miles Davis and B*tches Brew? The Baptist college had a jazz radio station, and the album had a (long) label on it, in essence saying we could announce it as "some brew from Miles Davis" or something equally lame. The station was a whole whopping 100 watts, and hardly anyone was listening anyhow. Besides, it was a great album to put on and run out to get a bite to eat.

So I'm googling some of these band names, and am having a hard time finding evidence that they actually exist.  My only results are the Gawker page and articles referencing the Gawker page.  Are we 100% sure this wasn't a joke?

I would listen to Ass Spackle. Once, but...yeah, I would listen.

Any band that has to resort to that kind of attention whore gimmick name is probably devoid of talent.  They're not much different than all those tools who get out on their motorcycles on the first halfway warm day and constantly rev their engines.  Rev all you want, numb nuts.  The louder you get the more I ignore you.

Talent might be an objective term when talking about music, or any art really. I'd argue that the aforementioned Machinegun Fellatio does have many, many songs about sex. drugs, and rock and roll, but they are also pretty darn good pop song writers. To support this idea I give you:

Unsent letter
Rollercoaster
Pussytown (NSFW lyrics)

seems i remember, when they got before congress over something and a senator asked them where the name came from they changed the story so as not to say it was a semen reference.  it was early 90s so i dont remember it very well anymore.
