Zerochance: [upload.wikimedia.org image 220x220]

List fails without Holy Wars/The Punishment Due - Hangar 18.

He may be a sanctimonious, crazy, right-wing blowhard these days, but when he's on, Dave Mustaine is absolutely the shiat.

Come to think of it, Dialectic Chaos/This Day We Fight from, Endgame is also a hell of a one-two punch.

That was one of my suggestions too!

*fist bump*

When I meet the douchebags that wrote this article in a bar, I put "Mountain Jam" on the internet jukebox.

/Yes, I really have done this.
//Still your best jukebox value.

Since it's the AV Club should I just assume it's a bunch of hipster douches talking about pretentious music nobody has ever heard of or cares about?

2013-02-08 06:16:17 PM

loki see loki do: Van Halen
Runnin' with the Devil
Eruption/You Really Got Me

Punch, they said

That's three tracks, but had they bumped Runnin' with the Devil to the beginning of Side 2 I would say it's a very strong contender. Eruption has Track 1 written all over it. Can you even imagine popping open some band's debut album and having that be your introduction to them, with the frame of reference of only having heard music that came out before 1978? Holy farking shiat.

Personally, I think "Devil" is one of the weaker tracks on the album. It kind of thunks along as opposed to I'm the One or Ice Cream Man, which really have that fun kind of energy that I associate with Dave-era Van Halen at their best. Fantastic album, a game-changer in hard rock.

2013-02-08 06:20:43 PM

nathanjr: Cortez the Killer: Led Zeppelin - IV (ZOSO)

1. Black Dog
2. Rock and Roll

Agreed.  I'd also suggest Led Zeppelin II

1. Whole Lotta Love
2. What Is and What Should Never Be

I'm partial to Physical Graffiti

1. Custard Pie
2. The Rover

Throw in the 3rd song, In My Time of Dying, and you have a near perfect encapsulation of the band in 3 songs.

ObeliskToucher: Straight Outta Compton, N.W.A.

Straight Outta Compton/Gangsta, Gangsta

2) Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill

Damn good album

iron_city_ap: Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
1. Fight the Power
2. Welcome to the Terrordome

Fight the Power was so overplayed by the time that came out I usually went straight to Terrordome.   I've always thought the first two songs on the this set the tone perfectly:

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back

1. Bring the Noise
2. Don't Believe the Hype

/Countdown to Armageddon doesn't count.  It's an intro, not a song.

Slu: rcantley: The correct answer is R.E.M. Lifes Rich Pageant.  Begin the Begin -> These Days.

IMHO, of course.

Nice one.

And I didn't read TFA, but was Pearl Jam Vs. on there? Go to Animal is pretty sweet.

It was an "Honorable Mention" but that is a great choice.

Some of my favorites (just scanning through the collection):

Blue Traveler --> Four --> "Runaround" flows into "Stand"
Dire Straits --> Brothers In Arms --> "So Far Away" flows into "Money For Nothing"
Jethro Tull --> Aqualung --> "Aqualung" flows into "Cross-Eyed Mary"
Pearl Jam --> Ten --> "Once" flows into "Evenflow"
Peter Gabriel --> So --> "Red Rain" flows into "Sledgehammer"
Primus --> Frizzle Fry --> "To Defy the Laws of Tradition" flows into "Groundhog Day"
Prodigy --> The Fat of the Land --> "Smack My biatch Up" flows into "Breathe"
Queen --> News of the World --> "We Will Rock You" flows into "We Are the Champions"
Rage Against the Machine --> Evil Empire --> "People of the Sun" flows into "Bulls On Parade"
Soundgarden --> Badmotorfinger --> "Rusty Cage" flows into "Outshined"
Squirrel Nut Zippers --> Hot --> "Got My Own Thing Now" flows into "Put A Lid On It"
The Stone Roses --> The Stone Roses --> "I Wanna Be Adored" flows into "She Bangs the Drum"
Talking Heads --> Remain In Light --> "Born Under Punches" flows into "Crosseyed and Painless"

I'm actually glad someone else had that reaction. I'm better off for having read this thread than that article, methinks.

The Chemical Brothers, Further:
"Snow"/"Escape Velocity"

2013-02-08 06:57:33 PM
Can't believe all the love in this thread! It's pretty much my iPod line up right now... Booth and the Bad Angel, James, Stone Roses, Muse, Elbow and XTC.

Not a one/ two punch, more like "Can I play and name some favorite songs from these, just because I feel like it?"

"Sit Down"- James
"No Language in our Lungs"- XTC
"Scattered Black and Whites"- Elbow

Carry on.

2013-02-08 07:02:46 PM

AkaDad: After seeing all the nominations, I have declared a winner.

12349876: Queen - News of the World

1. We Will Rock You
2. We Are The Champions

Yes, it is up to me to decide.

It's really hard to imagine that both of those songs were just...songs...together on a single album at one time.

2013-02-08 07:07:02 PM

soia: I will go with Clutch

1)  Big News I
2)  Big New II

and for you underground fans, thrown in Big News III

All hail the almighty Clutch!

This is, in fact, the correct answer.

AntiProEveryThing: NoMeansNo / Wrong - It's Catching up -> The Tower

Listening to Wrong when I took the kid to the park day before yesterday.

He's 2, gotta get the weird stuff in his head early.

I accept that there will be some derision to this, but No Doubt's Spiderwebs/Excuse Me Mr. do a darn good job.

2013-02-08 07:43:59 PM
Lot of good titles already taken. I'll cheat a little and go with the 1-2-3 from the R side of Lies, which is different enough from the G side to warrant it's own consideration IMO.

(1) Patience
(2) Used to Love Her
(3) You're Crazy

Wow, such diversity in this thread, I have so many more albums to collect!
My picks are in the 80's Pop/New Wave genre since I didn't see it really represented:

Fashion  Fabrique "Move On", "Love Shadow"
Ultravox  Vienna "Astradyne", "New Europeans"
Patrick Duffy  Because We Love You "Something Special", "A Lot of Ink"
Heaven 17  Penthouse and Pavement "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang", "Penthouse and Pavement"

That barely even scratches the surface of this one genre.
/Yes, I like it a bit funky

The Cars/Candy-O

"It's All I Can Do"
"Shoo-Be-Do"
"Candy-O"

I'm just sorry I discovered this thread 300 comments in.  So many possible entries.

Has anyone mentioned The Cars first album's 1-2-3?
Good Times Roll - Best Friend's Girl - Just What I Needed

2013-02-08 08:59:42 PM
Fantastic choices in the thread, if not the original article.

Purple Haze/Manic Depression (Are You Experienced)
Summer's Cauldron/Grass (Skylarking)
Here it is Tomorrow/Where You Going Northern (The Big Shot Chronicles)

/Hey, I had to put one semi-obscure one in there.

2013-02-08 09:06:53 PM
Steely Dan, Katy Lied
Black Friday - Dr. Wu

Of course, there's Steely Dan's Aja, which may be a perfect album with a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7:

Black Cow - Aja -Deacon Blues - Peg - Home At Last - I Got The News - Josie
