Wait for the terrorism / destructive device charges.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said Thursday that his office was investigating to determine whether dynamite or any other type of explosive had been used, but that did not appear to be the case.

Didn't the beginning of TFA say he used some sort of "fireworks?"  When I think of fireworks, I don't think of sparklers.  I think of shiat that blows up.

My guess is they were emptying out the powder from a string of firecrackers and one of them decided it was time for a smoke break.

It's not Southern until you pass Springfield.

I don't know why I'm standing up for this. This moran makes us all look like idiots.

CSB:  Back in the day when dynamite was easier to come by, one of my childhood buddies and his older brother were blasting stumps.  Big bro wasn't giving Little Bro a chance to push the plunger, and Little Bro finally grew tired of that.  While his big brother was walking back from setting the last charge, Jr. jumped the gun and set off the charge.  His brother was knocked down but unhurt... unlike my buddy when his big brother was done.

Greaaaat at 28 years old, he's got a lifetime of care ahead of him.
What a nice thing to look forward to, presuming he recovers.

Maybe if you're from Chicago and you're terrified and ignorant of all things rural.

Tree stump grinder. It's a engine-powered machine that rotates a wheel w/ carbide-tipped teeth into a tree stump. Hydraulically assisted, the wheel may be steered up and down, sideways, and back & forth. Turns the stump into wood chips. Sheesh.

/from deep Southern IL, used to do this for a living
//got out, though

Anything south of I-80 is southern Illinois. South of 74 might as well be Missouri or Kentucky.

Oh man.  You need to spend some time south of I-70 then.  Between 74 and 70 is rural, but south of 70 is another world.  I guess we're the buffer zone.

Illinois is entirely north of the historic boundry(the Ohio river that far west)

Alex Broughton Butt Chugger: Wait for the terrorism / destructive device charges.

I'm surprised the article didn't go in that direction.  I've seen the dry ice in a 2 liter bottle called an I.E.D.

TFA didn't mention it but someone up-thread mentioned sparklers.  I've seen those sparkler bomb videos and I would say I.E.D. is a reasonable description of those.  If that's not what it was, what is a 'homemade firework' besides a tube and gunpowder, which was called a pipe bomb long before 9-11.

My family had a cabin near the Allegheny National Forest, so I thought this was more of a Western PA technique.

We could always tell when the Life Flight Helicopters were coming in from either Pittsburgh or Erie.

I used black powder to take out a stump once.  It worked well enough.

Life Flight, now a verb.
