iheartscotch: Here, there are several programs that provide food to needy school kids. One of the programs sends food home with them for the weekends. If you talk to the kids who participate in this program; you'll discover that they have to hide the food or their parents take it and eat it.

You read that right; sometimes, the only reliable meal these kids get is at school. You'd also discover that their parents very rarely buy anything but junk food.

These same people often have huge tvs and new cars. It's not that they have the money to pay for that kind of stuff; they just have poor impulse control and poor money management abilities.

/ I feel that anyone on the public dole shouldn't be buying huge tvs and new cars every three years; they should be feeding their damn kids.

That's kind of frowned on.

It's absolutely heart-breaking. Sometimes I volunteer through Catholic charities; they run a no cost daycare/ after school program and several no cost diners.

You wouldn't believe the number of new Cadillacs that get parked in the lot when they open for dinner.

sex0r: But Odumbdo says we need more taxes!  Nevermind the wastefulness that goes on daily with a corrupt and incompetent federal government.

I wonder how you can post a word like"Odumbo" and not realize that people will just flag you as a dumbass.

It's childish, uncreative and undermines any point that you might be trying to make.

Well, there's a bit of a difference in price between a new TV and a new car, too... You can get a 50" LCD for under $500 these days... Not exactly on-par with a car costing tens of thousands of dollars... I wouldn't begrudge anyone, no matter their income level, a new TV... Entertainment is very important to quality of life, and one new TV is unlikely to bankrupt anyone... But, yeah, if you're having trouble feeding your family, you might want to look into a used vehicle instead, if you need one at all... Or, at least a lower-priced new car that you plan to drive until it dies...

ZeroCorpse: I've determined that L.A. is a pit. From everything I've heard, it's a crappy place to be. it seems like the place is filled to the brim with superficial assholes, crooked cops competing for "most gory kill", gangs, airheads, Hollywood flotsam and jetsam, murderous ex-cops on a rampage, cutthroat rich people and no shortage of smarmy waiters and waitresses trying to get their big break into movies.

Honestly, it sounds a lot like New Jersey, but with more sun.

Johnny Queso actually, other than the traffic, it is a great place to live.

This.  Most people seem to really hate LA for some reason.  NYC and Chicago seem to catch a break from the public, but not LA.  The driving around sort of sucks and yeah, its a weird town in some aspects (mostly due to the influence of Hollywood).  But the weather is usually nice, lots of things to do, good variety of food, and rural areas to the east and north if you are into that.  And crime is mostly at the lowest point in decades.  Gangs and crack wars is so 1990's.

Yeah, LAPD sucks, our govt is sort of crappy and okay, we have regular car chases on the news.

Sargun: netcentric: Teacher:   How many of you students have the new NIKE sneakers?   Kids all raise their hands.   How many have two pairs at least.   All raise hands.   How many of you have a cell phone better than this one (holds up personal phone).   Kids all raise hands.

Teacher: and yet I note that every one of you is signed up as 'in need' and get free breakfast and lunch.   Hmmmm...

Teacher: ok, well on to our reading assignment....

/Penna.

Phones are free or cheap with contract, and shoes cost like $60.

THE HORROR OF PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH SHOES AND A CELL PHONE

you eventally haven't bought shoes in a while. The ones that hip kids wear start at 200
