Ebbelwoi: The problem is that Europeans are lulled into complacency because they have "rules" against hormones in meat.  But the Czech mafia supplies farmers all across Europe with illegal hormones, always careful to stay one step ahead of the testers ala Lance Armstrong.  So basically if they've been getting away with swapping one animal for another without the testers noticing, how much faith does anyone have that the testers will ever keep up with animal doping?

Whereas all Americans have home meat testing labs due to their incredible foresight?

You sound drunk. Seriously. That reads like your household consists of you, Jack Daniels, Rosy Palm and a lingering of odor of regret and bitterness.

in other news; horsemeat?  Yeah.  So?  Is it cooked?  Does it taste good?  Is it going to give me some weird brain eating worms like raccoon or food poisoning like undercooked pork?  Just because it's a cute herbivorous quadruped that eleven year old girls draw on their notebooks doesn't mean I'm  not eating it.

Then some lamb.

And some rabbit stew tomorrow.

I don't know why people keep going on about this.....their food was 100% NOT contaminated....all that occurred is the boxes were misprinted.

TV's Vinnie: Spiralmonkey: Why not just use British beef?

Ever heard of "Mad Cow"? People are still filling their diapers over that.

Yep.   That's why it's governed by some of the strictest standards in the world.  British beef has a system where the meat can be traced back not just to the farm but the individual animal.  If they were using British beef it would be beef, not horse.   It costs more, but it's guaranteed to be what it says it is, and it's guaranteed to be from a healthy animal.  Imports can't be trusted because they don't operate to the same standards.

Ostman: Whereas all Americans have home meat testing labs due to their incredible foresight?

No.  In the States you have the FDA which tests and regulates hormones and antibiotics.  They're not good for you, but at least they have to pass scientific muster.   In Europe we have the problem of illegal substances which are widely used due to bans, but only tested by the people who are creating them i.e. mafia paid chemists.  It is literally just like bicyle doping and the substances are constantly tweaked.  I really don't want to eat either one, but if I had the choice I'll take the ones which have been tested and approved.

Is it unsanitary? no,

Is it tasty?  apparently it is.

All this horsemeat stuff makes me think I want to try it.

i hear it's perfectly acceptable in italy. normal, even. maybe i should try it.

I've had it in Germany.  It was OK.  I preferred the pork tartar sandwiches I could get at the butcher.  You heard me. They taste like pork, onions, and danger.

I'd really like to hear from horse lovers who are OK with eating beef and or pork and or poultry and or pork on why those three meats are OK but when it's horse meat, suddenly it's "Aw, hell no!"

Just another "what the hell is so bad about that" vote here. Horse meat is lean, healthy, and tasty. Are there any non-anglophone countries that have a problem eating it?

I'd love to try a horse.  I definitely wouldn't love to try horse that came from a suspicious source, likely was "euthanized" by lethal injection, and got butchered by rusty knives before being passed along to me as "beef".

It really does seem to be from the English speaking world. For example, just the other day, I was teaching some of my students the 2nd conditional. One of the questions in the book was,"What would you do if you went to a friends house and they served you horse?" Of course, this was supposed to be a disgusting question. They all just stared at me for a minute, and said things to the extent of, "Uh, farking eat it?"

You're a jackass.

Hey, Fark! Anytime anyone makes a joke, pun, posts a pic or anything else, it MUST be no older than 5 minutes! We wouldn't want to offend our poor little infant internet user, TheGhostofFarkPast. In fact, just to be sure, better run every post you have through him first. After all, his account is from 2009, he's old school. He remembers the better days when Palin was a hot topic and shiat. Anything that is posted that refers to anything that happened before Obama initially got elected is off-limits, and will result in him acting like a whiny asshole. If it is any consolation, I bet his parents are real proud of him, as they did a heckuva job. Shiat.... I just posted something that referenced Katrina. Hope that doesn't offend our little buttercup.

As has been mentioned, and I can say goes for the 10 or so people I've joked with about it, the issue isn't "OMG HORSEY!!!!!" it's about truth in labelling and the fact that horse meat isn't regulated for human consumption here (though no one I've spoken with knows why).

If the manufacturers are able to slip 100% horse by the inspectors, what the hell else is going on?
