My first not snarky guess would be they missed a tiny amount and a lab tech was asleep at the wheel.

It seems to be, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, this is really rare. If it's a legitimate birth, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.

Very likely only a portion of the placenta was retained, since the damn thing is attached to the umbilical cord.

What the everloving motherfark? I'm about as far from a doctor or medic as you can get - as far as I know, we're all filled with some kind of red goo - but even I know you gotta deliver the placenta after the baby.

I do have three kids and was at all three births, so there's that, but how do medical types miss this?

I bet the doctors just thought she needed a little TLC. But, boy were they wrong! The Discovery that her placenta was still inside her at the A&E must have had her seeing STARZ! This kind of mistake is the Hallmark of a really unprofessional medical staff. Hopefully they got her on antibiotics and maybe even gave her a little Oxygen. This is really like the start of a bad movie on SyFy where the placenta grows into an amoeba-like zombie trilobitey bug-monster and bursts forth from her infected womb to lurk in the dark nooks of our Homes and Gardens and pick us off one by one until the human race is History.

Not always... However I find it hard to believe that there was something missing from the giant tub it's first placed in or the box detailing where to send the placenta wasn't marked. This isn't exactly a small mistake.

OK, I looked up what and how a "retained placenta" could happen, and it's just too nauseating to even describe here. Suffice it to say, I can see how it could happen even in a hospital delivery IF the doctor was really careless and hurried and IF they didn't bother to send the placenta down to the lab afterwards or if the pathologist just gave it a quick once-over and said "Yep, looks good to me!" and tossed it in the incinerator. Evidently, it's not all that uncommon for small pieces of the placenta to remain stuck to the inside of the uterus after delivery (at least, not as uncommon as one would like).

From what I understand, NIH doctors and labs are certainly capable of this kind of sloppy behavior, so the moral of this story is, if you feel bad after giving birth, get your afterbirth checked.

It depends on a lot of things. Sometimes, you have a chuck that's left in because it had adhered to the uterine wall, or developed abnormally in terms if it's blood supply. Sometimes a chunk can be broken off because of trauma, or because of previous scarring and damage of the uterus.

That's why, at the very least, the OBGYN will examine the placenta to ensure it's intact after it passes, or will send it to the patho lab for the pathologist to put eyes on it.

Trauma sounds about right. The doctor that delivered me was impatient and basically tried to yank things out faster, which left a fair bit inside. My mother spent years basically bleeding to death slowly (or less slowly when menstruating) until a decent doctor finally went in for a look and fixed the whole thing.

I disagree. It's basically been kept inside a sterile, humidity-controlled slow-cooker for two months. It should be about ten notches beyond fork-tender by now.
