So... just more of the same?
Shame subby... SHAME!!!

2013-02-07 02:07:25 PM
So basically, what the article is telling me, is that the way it went down is that "SWAT agents stormed the bunker."

OOooooooookay then.

What I'm more interested in knowing, given that a flash-bang was used and there was some ass burgery kid in the there, if the kid is still rocking back and forth in a corner somewhere screaming "NO LOUD NOISES! NO LOUD NOISES! NO LOUD NOISES!"

I'm glad we had a greenlit thread for this detailed breakdown of how SWAT took this guy down.

Maybe they should just pour concrete down the air-shaft and be done with it. Dude's already underground, etc.

Actual article: No details on how it went down at all.

Here's a new detail I didn't know before: The closest thing he had to a friend was the bus driver that he killed. The bus driver delivered a "gift of eggs and jam to Dykes' trailer several days before the incident, as a thank you for Dykes' work shoveling a narrow road so that Poland could make a three-point turn on his bus route."

Also, the two guys argued for quite a while on the bus over whether or not Dykes could take the boy, and then Dykes killed him. I didn't realize it was a drawn-out argument.

Reading comprehenshun, apparently you have that....

"Dale County Coroner Woodrow Hilboldt says he had not been able to confirm exactly how Dykes died because the man's body had remained in the bunker. An autopsy is to be conducted in Montgomery once the body is removed."

And the article is dated yesterday and the ordeal was over Monday afternoon so it's been about 50 to 75 hours by now. YUMMY!!!!!

From another article:

"FBI special agents were positioned near the entrance of the bunker and negotiators were able to convince Dykes to approach the bunker door. FBI agents used two explosions to gain entry into the bunker"

"Don't you ever laugh as the hearse goes by,For you may be the next one to die. They wrap you up in a big white sheet From your head down to your feet. They put you in a big black box

And cover you up with dirt and rocks. All goes well for about a week, Then your coffin begins to leak. The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out, The worms play pinochle in your snout,

They eat your eyes, they eat your nose, They eat the jelly between your toes. A big green worm with rolling eyes Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes. Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus pours out like whipping cream. You'll spread it on a slice of bread, And this is what you eat when you are dead."

Cops, and particularly bomb squad cops, get hazard pay.  Paramedics and morgue personnel do not.  Since there is still question as to the safeness of the site, only people that get hazard pay can go in.  And seeing that the body is part of a crime scene, they can't move the body until the scene is documented, and they can't document the scene because they're still sweeping for bombs.

Not only is this article from like 27 hours ago, but there's also nothing else to really learn about the situation.

1. Guy kills bus driver.
2. Guy kidnaps kid, holes up in a bunker.
3. Cops try to negotiate for almost a week.
4. Cops storm bunker, kill guy, rescue boy.

Anything beyond these 4 points is just the media trying to suck ratings out of this story as much as they can.

Then again, it would be interesting to know more about the investigation, such as the guy's demands, motives, etc., and perhaps an update on the boy's mental state in a few weeks/months.  But until those facts surface, the media should just shut the fark up.

/end rant.

I was thinking something similar to this. They did say that they wouldn't elaborate on the method used to place the cameras in there, so it gives me a feeling it was something a little sneakier than simply lowering a camera down the PVC pipe. So yeah, out of the items known to have been lowered into the bunker, the toys would seem like the best medium for the job.

I'm sure they'll continue to press the police for information though. That doesn't mean they need to release update after update to the public when there hasn't been any new information released.

2013-02-07 03:24:46 PM
The police (or maybe the FBI) did use a drone, just not to blow up the bunker. They had a drone with IR cameras flying overhead at night to spot any other entrances, or if he tried to sneak out.

I wonder if an experience like this could somehow have a positive effect on a boy like that. Like, it was so scary and strange, and he was so alone, and had to rely almost solely on his own inner resources, that it somehow pushed him out the other side of the behavioral bubble he's been trapped in.

Mere ignorant speculation, but still. If I survived something like that as the "normal" person I am, it might change my outlook on a few things.

Sumpn' about the kid getting killed would be a little hard to spin in the press.
I offered to fart down the air-hole and smoke him out but the cops just looked at me real strange-like.

What about fiber optic cameras?  Supposedly this thing was built out of little more than 2x4's and plywood, so poking a tiny hole through the wood would not be hard

Meh, I think that's the whole point of him kidnapping the kid in the first place. Whatever message he wanted to get out there, he needed publicity as well as leverage over authorities So what better choice than a kid? The media are usually all over any story involving a child, so he gets the public attention that he wants; meanwhile, the cops would never "drop dynamite in the hole" with a hostage involved, so he gets the leverage he needs. He had pretty much all points covered, except the inevitable rushing of the bunker.
