Using the Moon soundtrack is almost like cheating, because it's so damn perfect for this.

If it runs on my system, I'll get it.  I've been wanting a decent Aliens game since I installed a well-done Aliens mod on Doom.

Curious about the use of the "Sick" tag.  Mebbe I'd better wait and watch this from home.

Another video game trailer that shows no actual gameplay. Surprise surprise, 'Aliens: Colonial Marines' involves...aliens. And marines.

Still doesnt change the fact that the gameplay we've seen so far looks like ass.

Also: "Vertical explosion" excuse as to why the colony is still here after a nuclear explosion the size of Kansas. What the dicks.

Alien Quake was one of the scariest games I've ever played.

2013-02-07 02:47:08 PM
Well that was exponentially better than their last trailer for the game (a trailer with a voice over so bad, the game's writer went to Twitter to assure people that it's not from the game nor did he write it).

2013-02-07 02:49:49 PM
Never played the quake mod, but the Doom mod was Alien TC done by Justin Fisher. Back in the day we loaded that up in the college PC lab, and a friend and I played through on co-op, to this day one of the scariest game experiences of my life.

On the other hand, there's really not much you CAN do, gameplaywise, in a game like this, besides make it a FPS. And if they get the Aliens atmosphere right (like the 2010 AvP Marine campaign utterly failed to do), you've already got a pretty decent game.

If this does well, I'll keep hoping for a game that actually focuses on the Xenos. The Xeno campaign in AvP 2010 was by far the best, and would have been brilliant with just a little more polish.

/Predator campaign wasn't too bad either.

2013-02-07 02:54:29 PM
sadly, considering the development hell this game has gone through, i can't be excited about it. especially since the originally AvP and especially AvP 2 are still amazing. the bar is set pretty high

Wasnt talking about it being a FPS. More like the slow animations for the xenomorphs, or the "pounce" animations for the xenomorphs you cant knock them out of with that "gunbutt smack" move the marines you can do. Or the fact that it's basically directly taking Left 4 Dead's special infected design and making them aliens without being subtle about it.

Also, again: Why is it on the Alien's planet instead of making a new setting they can do original stuff in?

The word 'trailer' tricked me into thinking this was going to be a movie. I guess game developers have hijacked the word to mean a bunch of cut-scene clips featuring graphics quality that no mortal will ever witness in actual gameplay.

I feel cheated. Like when I watched Prometheus.

2013-02-07 03:11:08 PM
I really really want this to be good. Some of my favorite multiplayer experiences come from extended AVP2 sessions as the little speedy guy from Alien3. Once you got a handle on the arc of the pounce and got used to the wall clinging mechanics it was like fish in a barrel. It was so easy to just crawl into a vent and wait until some sucker walked past then crawl along the ceiling and drop down right behind them and eviscerate the poor bastard. Aah, fun times.

As long as you don't have to fix any fuse boxes.

2013-02-07 03:14:39 PM
I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited about this.  I got to play a bit of the multiplayer at Pax last year, and it really works.  The Marine weapons are fun, and the way the Aliens are controlled in 3rd person is great.

I'm interested in how the story plays out, being a cannonical sequel to the movies.

I know the developers have said they're working on/want to work on a sequel to AvP 2010, and all the sequel hooks in that game pointed to the Xeno homeworld. Here's hoping they don't fark it up.

I've never seen the horror associated with the 'aliens'. It was somewhat scary in the first movie when it was killing a bunch of helpless unarmed people, but I just sorta go 'hrm' after that. I suppose that in the second movie they didn't know what they were dealing with which is why they nearly got wiped out...

But even a modern age group of soldiers could deal with those things.

The second was never meant to be a horror movie, persay. The third one went back toward the horror genre, with the fourth one still in production. Wonder if they will ever make it.

I own the pc versions of AvP, AvP2 and the AvP2010. AvP2010 just didn't click with me. I think it was the over reliance on melee attacks and weapons for the two other races. With the aliens,It just didn't have the nice easy climbing that the old games had. I wish there was a mod that gave the old games controls to the new game. Then I would play the shiat out of it.

THIS! It is a concern that, five days before release, they aren't showing off what the game you're gonna play looks like.  Thinka bout the release of BF for example, the later trailers were practically nothing but gameplay.  IGN posted on Youtube recently about five minutes worth of outtakes from actual gameplay of the campaign.  Looks ok.

Gotta be Aliens TC, mentioned earlier in the thread.  That was a tremendous mod.

I distinctly recall hearing that the fourth one will never be made and that they abandoned the project.

Also, while the cutscenes look good (duh, they're cutscenes), those faces looked pretty comical, like they belong in a Dreamworks movie, not a game).

I'm excited, but zero-gameplay trailers don't inspire confidence in me.

They say the Wii U version is the best-looking too. And the game pad will certainly enable other nifty functions and gameplay mechanics too. I imagine hacking into terminals and welding doors closed with the stylus. But they're taking their time with the port. Oh well, a late game is better than an unpolished game.

I dug my old "Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual" out of storage, and read it to suppress the wantwantwant jitters.

Anybody else?   Just me? OK...

Anyway, the developer must have a nerd on staff paying attention to the little details, because the hand grenade used by the Marine in the last scene (at 1:50) is an M40 High Explosive Fragmentation grenade for the underslungPN 30 mm pump-action grenade launcher. (The most commonly used grenade round for the M41A, the M40 round is marked by a red cap and rimmed separating base. With a muzzle velocity of 87/ms the M40 is accurate up to 180 meters and effective up to 400 meters. Upon detonation a notched steel wire wrapped around a composition B15 will spread over three hundred deadly fragments over a five meter casualty radius. While it can be used as an ad hoc hand grenade, flipping off the plastic cap and twisting the nose clockwise to start a five-second delayed detonation, striking or depressing the nose cap will cause the grenade to explode immediately.)

The resulting bang is a bit excessive, but I suppose that can be chalked up to creative license, or else a secondary explosion of something very volatile.

I'm older, wiser, and poorer than I was in my prime gaming days ( late-90's). Although I dearly love the Alien-franchise, I'll hold off spending my $60 or so until I know it's worth it.

A friend and I actually got tickets to go to the advanced screening. We were in high school, we thought we were hot shiat back then. A few days later a review came out in the Baltimore Sun. The lady who reviewed the movie knew fark-all about the franchise so we sent the paper a nice letter telling her how badly she farked up on dates, information, actors names, etc.

Up until the alien love-child thing, the movie wasn't half bad.

This. I remember when it was

Original Teaser Trailer: CG, maybe some music, maybe a stirring voiceover...

As you went along the trailers had more gameplay, maybe some nice videos of the devs demonstrating a thing or two... that kind of thing.

But an all CG trailer at this point?

Two other things:

1) Is it my imagination or were there no female marines in that entire clip? (I didn't see any... I may have missed them)

2) Is it supposed to be taking place in slow-motion? Alien lands next to marine then kindly gives him 3 seconds to turn and another second to fire so he can kill it.

INeedAName: The second was never meant to be a horror movie, persay. The third one went back toward the horror genre, with the fourth one still in production. Wonder if they will ever make it.

I wasn't very clear.

Based on how they act, operate, and reproduce these 'aliens' are a poor excuse for something that's suppose to be dangerous.

PsyLord: vygramul: If it runs on my system, I'll get it.  I've been wanting a decent Aliens game since I installed a well-done Aliens mod on Doom.

Man, that mod was awesome.  Have you ever tried the Alien Swarm mod on UT?  It's 3rd person perspective and done pretty well.

Valve's Source based build of this is available for free on Steam as well.

Also good trailer music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp-4iaKXP68

Holy shiat, that looks like a SciFi version of Savage, which was one of the most entertaining, well done, and wonderfully complex game I've ever played.  I'd love to give it a try.

Is that multiplayer only?  I like FPS games, but I'm particularly bad at them compared to most people who get into multiplayer, so if it's MP only, it's just going to be an exercise in frustration for me.

The AvP marine campaign damn near gave me heart problems. I could never see anything and those damn aliens move fast.

randomjsa: I've never seen the horror associated with the 'aliens'.

Just like the world's most technologically advanced country that had invented the most powerful weapons and vehicles in history could surely win a war in pick-your-third-world-shiathole.

Aliens is one of several ways 1980s Hollywood played on America's feelings about Vietnam.

My friend's uncle was a waist-gunner on a B-17 and said that you couldn't traverse the gun fast enough to get a shot off at an ME-262.  So I sped up Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe until I couldn't traverse fast enough to shoot at them.  You don't last long doing that.

Is this the Aliens game where all the playable characters are male? I seem to remember some sort of amusingly sad discussion about how an upcoming Aliens game was not going to include playable female characters, and I remember thinking "That... is just so dumb. If there was EVER a chance to include a female character who is a Heavy Weapons Girl and have it be entirely and utterly acceptable, it would be an Aliens game."

wildcardjack: I'm not too familiar with the Aliens, so this might be a stupid question...

If the plot depends on it, they can exist in a vacuum for as long as it takes for them to get where they shouldn't be able to get to, due to the vacuum.

The Allies were damn lucky that the ME-262 showed up so late in the war and had engine problems.  If it had been more reliable and had showed up a year or two earlier, that fokker could have won the war for the Germans.

There's been a lot of chatter about this, and knowing Gearbox I'd lay even money that they'll have some sort of DLC in the future.

What are you talking about? They made the fourth Alien movie in 1997. Sigorney Weaver has a mutant lovechild with the Aliens and Earth gets destroyed at the end.

/oh wait, I get it.

I liked it for the most part. It's a bit... mediocre considering the talents of everyone involved; you can tell that Whedon and Jeunet weren't thrilled with the concept. Weaver seems to be the only one who had fun with the film (and good for her).

Clint Mansell is farking brilliant. The score to Moon is amazing. The Fountain is also a favorite of mine.

Spoiler-free review:

First let's do the positives:

* The game is fun
* The environments are creepy and dark
* Authentic sound effects and excellent voice acting
* You can upgrade your weapons getting XP you earn from completing "challenges"
* Weapons etc look authentic and it's obvious people put effort into that.

Now, unfortunately the bad:

*The AI is rock stupid 99% of the time... (I've lost count of the number of times I've had aliens just stand there or crouch there looking at me)
* Amount of damage done is all over the place (I was trying to hit a couple aliens with a grenade from my pulse rifle. Another alien got in the way, took a grenade to the face point blank and all it did was knock him back about 2 feet)
* This game was stuck in developmental purgatory on and off for years and it shows in a lot of the graphics. (The textures range from not bad to PS2 and there's lots of clipping).

Is it worth playing? Yes. Could it have used more development time? Yes.

Overall, it's not... what it could have been... but what's there is still a lot of fun. 7.5 / 10.

After seeing that trailer, I want a squad-level strategy game on this premise. Like X-Com, only this setting instead of Earf.

Bah, it's just another shooter. Let's remake the same old game a thousand times with better graphics. Pass.

Thought subby was talking about the Nintendo DS game "Moon".  I bought that game and really, really wanted to like it.  But it was completely unplayable for me.  Holding the system one-handed and using that same hand to move and fire your weapon (with the L shoulder button) is just not a feasible control scheme for me.  Playing that game for any length of time literally made my hands go numb.  Not to mention the excruciating pain that would follow.  Hurray for my surely inevitable future case of carpal-tunnel syndrome!

Far more likely they would have lasted just long enough to get nuked.

That's been Nintendo's strategy for over 30 years and it's been working like a charm for them.

By what measure? It didnt have the range or the payload to affect ground operations (like either the Russian or offensives or the Normandy landings), and judging by total German aircraft production numbers for the war, their wouldnt have been enough of either them or pilots to fly them to stem the allied air campaign. They could have had a fully operational fleet of the things by 1941 and it wouldnt have changed the outcome of the war by even a month...
