INeedAName: randomjsa: I've never seen the horror associated with the 'aliens'. It was somewhat scary in the first movie when it was killing a bunch of helpless unarmed people, but I just sorta go 'hrm' after that. I suppose that in the second movie they didn't know what they were dealing with which is why they nearly got wiped out...

But even a modern age group of soldiers could deal with those things.

The second was never meant to be a horror movie, persay. The third one went back toward the horror genre, with the fourth one still in production. Wonder if they will ever make it.

GavinTheAlmighty: xalres: There are tons of gameplay videos on youtube.

I don't doubt that at all, but when the developer doesn't release gameplay clips in the trailers, it suggests to me that the developer isn't overly confident in the game they've created.  I hope I'm wrong because I really want this game to be great.

It looks okay. I would think the animations could be a bit better though, a bit more fluid. I kind of expect better at this point in gaming. I dunno, I think I'll wait a few weeks for the reviews to come in. Burned by the last game...

I used to hate trailers with no game footage.  5-10 years ago, it meant the game blew.  Now its like they spend so much time, money, and effort on them, im dissapointed when they have to use game footage.

I dug my old "Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual" out of storage, and read it to suppress the wantwantwant jitters.

Anybody else?   Just me? OK...

Anyway, the developer must have a nerd on staff paying attention to the little details, because the hand grenade used by the Marine in the last scene (at 1:50) is an M40 High Explosive Fragmentation grenade for the underslungPN 30 mm pump-action grenade launcher. (The most commonly used grenade round for the M41A, the M40 round is marked by a red cap and rimmed separating base. With a muzzle velocity of 87/ms the M40 is accurate up to 180 meters and effective up to 400 meters. Upon detonation a notched steel wire wrapped around a composition B15 will spread over three hundred deadly fragments over a five meter casualty radius. While it can be used as an ad hoc hand grenade, flipping off the plastic cap and twisting the nose clockwise to start a five-second delayed detonation, striking or depressing the nose cap will cause the grenade to explode immediately.)

The resulting bang is a bit excessive, but I suppose that can be chalked up to creative license, or else a secondary explosion of something very volatile.

As long as the gameplay is good I can forgive par to sub-par graphics(ie Borderlands).

I'm older, wiser, and poorer than I was in my prime gaming days ( late-90's). Although I dearly love the Alien-franchise, I'll hold off spending my $60 or so until I know it's worth it.

/ I'm sure I've wasted hundreds of dollars over the years on crappy PC games

From what I've read, when someone calls them on a detail they've missed, they change it.  Pretty cool actually.

People are excited for this? It looks cheap and the commercials (which most people see, only fans will look on Youtube and fans are per-disposed to like it) don't show gameplay.Even the CGI it does show looks crummy.

Alebak: Still doesnt change the fact that the gameplay we've seen so far looks like ass.

Also: "Vertical explosion" excuse as to why the colony is still here after a nuclear explosion the size of Kansas. What the dicks.

This. The graphics look wretched, and yeah, in an FPS, that matters. Just gonna be another in a long line of Aliens game disappointments. And yep, the explosion thing is lame.

This. I remember when it was

Original Teaser Trailer: CG, maybe some music, maybe a stirring voiceover...

As you went along the trailers had more gameplay, maybe some nice videos of the devs demonstrating a thing or two... that kind of thing.

But an all CG trailer at this point?

Two other things:

1) Is it my imagination or were there no female marines in that entire clip? (I didn't see any... I may have missed them)

2) Is it supposed to be taking place in slow-motion? Alien lands next to marine then kindly gives him 3 seconds to turn and another second to fire so he can kill it.

Is that multiplayer only?  I like FPS games, but I'm particularly bad at them compared to most people who get into multiplayer, so if it's MP only, it's just going to be an exercise in frustration for me.

Just like the world's most technologically advanced country that had invented the most powerful weapons and vehicles in history could surely win a war in pick-your-third-world-shiathole.

Aliens is one of several ways 1980s Hollywood played on America's feelings about Vietnam.

My friend's uncle was a waist-gunner on a B-17 and said that you couldn't traverse the gun fast enough to get a shot off at an ME-262.  So I sped up Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe until I couldn't traverse fast enough to shoot at them.  You don't last long doing that.

Is this the Aliens game where all the playable characters are male? I seem to remember some sort of amusingly sad discussion about how an upcoming Aliens game was not going to include playable female characters, and I remember thinking "That... is just so dumb. If there was EVER a chance to include a female character who is a Heavy Weapons Girl and have it be entirely and utterly acceptable, it would be an Aliens game."

wildcardjack: I'm not too familiar with the Aliens, so this might be a stupid question...

If the plot depends on it, they can exist in a vacuum for as long as it takes for them to get where they shouldn't be able to get to, due to the vacuum.

The Allies were damn lucky that the ME-262 showed up so late in the war and had engine problems.  If it had been more reliable and had showed up a year or two earlier, that fokker could have won the war for the Germans.

I liked it for the most part. It's a bit... mediocre considering the talents of everyone involved; you can tell that Whedon and Jeunet weren't thrilled with the concept. Weaver seems to be the only one who had fun with the film (and good for her).

Spoiler-free review:

First let's do the positives:

* The game is fun
* The environments are creepy and dark
* Authentic sound effects and excellent voice acting
* You can upgrade your weapons getting XP you earn from completing "challenges"
* Weapons etc look authentic and it's obvious people put effort into that.

Now, unfortunately the bad:

*The AI is rock stupid 99% of the time... (I've lost count of the number of times I've had aliens just stand there or crouch there looking at me)
* Amount of damage done is all over the place (I was trying to hit a couple aliens with a grenade from my pulse rifle. Another alien got in the way, took a grenade to the face point blank and all it did was knock him back about 2 feet)
* This game was stuck in developmental purgatory on and off for years and it shows in a lot of the graphics. (The textures range from not bad to PS2 and there's lots of clipping).

Is it worth playing? Yes. Could it have used more development time? Yes.

Overall, it's not... what it could have been... but what's there is still a lot of fun. 7.5 / 10.

2013-02-08 02:27:29 AM
After seeing that trailer, I want a squad-level strategy game on this premise. Like X-Com, only this setting instead of Earf.

Bah, it's just another shooter. Let's remake the same old game a thousand times with better graphics. Pass.

Thought subby was talking about the Nintendo DS game "Moon".  I bought that game and really, really wanted to like it.  But it was completely unplayable for me.  Holding the system one-handed and using that same hand to move and fire your weapon (with the L shoulder button) is just not a feasible control scheme for me.  Playing that game for any length of time literally made my hands go numb.  Not to mention the excruciating pain that would follow.  Hurray for my surely inevitable future case of carpal-tunnel syndrome!
