Iceland has launched an investigation into the mass death of tens of thousands of wild herring. One newspaper estimated the value of the dead fish to be almost $10 million.

Hmm, so let's say 30k fishes is in the tens of thousands, that comes to 333 dollars per herring for that value. Math much, newspaper?

Herring is an important fish in the ocean. Lots of other fish eat them. Plus, pickled herring and kippers are amazingly delicious

They link to Yahoo, which makes more sense:
The Morgunbladid newspaper estimated the value of the 10,000 tons of fish found dead this week at 1.25 billion kronur ($9.8 million). An even larger number of fish died in December.

Just hang the fish in a barn to dry like Hakarl.

*to be sung as a Nordic Dirge*

They called him Kipper, Kipper, faster than lightning,
no-one you see, is more delicious than he,
And we knew Kipper, lived in a world full of wonder,
nowlifelessly floating upon the sea.

Kindly smoke yourself and leap into my belly.

Anyone have a better idea for a "behead those who" 'shop? All I can think of is "swim around" and that's too long and much work.

This. If you find sardines gross, buy a different brand. The brand you buy makes a huge difference.

You can still make lutefisk from these dead herring, right?  Wouldn't it take less time because the herring are already partially rotted?

Yeah, I came in here to post something similar.  Even if you go to 100k herring, that's still $100/herring which seems ridiculous.

When I arrived at my host family's home in Germany, back on an exchange in high school, they had pickled herring and warm Coke set out to welcome me.  Gaaaaah.  And sat there and stared at me while I had to eat and drink it.  Then they gave me a beer, God bless 'em.
