The guy in the wheelchair probably spent in excess of $2,000 to get that winning ticket.  He probably yells at traffic, too.  He's a jerk.

Newport News... quelle surprise!

I was going to remark about how much Mo's Convenience Store needs to clean the dank off of their security camera but those face shots of the mugger are pretty damn clear, as it turns out.  What a jerk-ass motherf*cker.

Wheelchair guy should invest in the new Instant Karma Scratch-off game. Only $5 a card. It has more Instant Karma winners than any other card.

What people describe as karma, I think, is the long term effects of a certain psychological perspective. If you go through life screwing over other people it usually has an impact, whether you realize it or not, on your self esteem.

I don't hate all people in wheel chairs.  Just this guy and the 2 who harrassed everyone in my town from the day they got back from 'Nam and became bitter and blamed everyone else for their disabilities until the day they died.
And Stephen Hawking.

There certainly is, but it's not a the punishment thing people seem to think it is.

"The suspect is described a young man wearing a blue jacket and a black hat with a red stripe. "

so..can't say 'black' young man.  Can you say man?  Young?  those are discriminatory too.

I think you have a valid point. I prefer to refer to it as "actions and consequences".

They did show him, pretty clearly, and so the race assumption isn't important.  The photo is truth, and "young man" is almost certainly true, but he could be a Caribbean or Pacific Islander, or mixed race, needlessly prejudicing people away from taking a look at the picture and realizing "hey that's Charlie, that sick motherf*cker!  I'm going to call crimestoppers on his mixed-race ass!"

I think the second guy in line might have found the only reliable way to win at the lottery.

Why even bother to catch to suspect?  If the case goes to trial, the victim doesn't even have a leg to stand on...

Okay, you're right.  Although the pattern of "if we don't mention complexion, assume black" is pretty racist of the news as well.

Jones uses a wheelchair to get around after losing his leg to diabetes nearly 30 years ago. On Friday, he cashed a winning lottery ticket worth $500 at Mo's Convenience Store off Warwick Blvd.

Didn't know you could cash a $500 lottery ticket at a convenience store. Anything over $100 usually gets redirected to a grocery store. Plus, now every thief in the tri-county, bi-state and single nation area knows that Mo's Convenience Store off Warwick Blvd stocks a lot of extra cash.

That it is in Newport News is already a fairly significant deterrent to most folks, even thieves.

Say "black", you're racist. Make no mention of complexion? You're racist.

Try this:

"The suspect is described a young man who is possibly vitamin D deficient and has a low chance of developing melanoma. He was wearing a blue jacket and a black hat with a red stripe."

I wish, I really do, that that was a rule of the universe - I doubt it though.

Some years back the liberal Washington Post stopped stating the race of criminals on the basis that it was "racist"  but it was actually on the assumption that any low-level criminal in DC and surrounding suburbs would, by necessity, be black.

/Let's be honest, folks.....

"Black" is not a race any more than "dark-skinned" is a race.  Either would have provided a better description, and one should have been used.

so if you're a white or hispanic criminal you're gold then. Short of being caught red handed you will never be suspected of anything.

I think the WaPo has gone back to mentioning the race of the suspect, as it was a stupid idea to leave that out in the first place.

I haven't seen a photo of the gentleman robber in question, but I presume he's Asian or Scandinavian.
