I love going camping with new girlfriends.  It's a great opportunity to spend some alone time with them in the woods.  I usually bring a hatchet and some rope so we can gather a bundle of firewood and make a cozy fire.  The place I go is so remote, I half-jokingly refer to it as "Scream Away Canyon."  I made the spot real nice with a mattress I drug up there.  I think it's awesome of me to take city slicking, fancy butt, I'm-too-good-for-your-chipped-tooth'd ass up there for a little R&R.  Anyone want to go?

-cooking your own food over a camp fire is FUN
-camping stopped being uncomfortable when air mattresses took off
-nearly all camp sites have clean water & even power hookups & communal showers

That said, I appreciate that there are different reasons to go "camping".

Camping. Drive into depths of National Forest. Accounting for any local rules, find somewhere to put up tent. This has always worked except the one time I was followed by the old guy who thought I looked like I knew where I was going, and his wife who was all "I told you so" at him when I told them the nearest anything was to turn around and drive back the way they came.

I'd make fun of this, but what I consider camping (pulling into a crowded camp ground with just a few trees separating each site in a relatively safe area with decent tents) would be mocked by more "hardcore" naturists.

I dunno - if you're going on extended backpacking trips, $1,200 for the gear is low.  Lightweight backpack, tent, sleeping bag, thermarest, cooking gear, food, shoes, clothes, etc can easily get there.

That aside, it's been a long time since I've done that.  I am working towards glamping, but slowly.  Of course, my tendency is to drive my Xterra to the site, set up camp, and then go off-roading in the local area.  If not off-roading, then hiking.  No more sleeping on the ground.  I've got a camp kitchen set-up, folding chairs, a nice thick foam pad for sleeping, etc.  Next major project, in terms of personal comfort, is an off-road worthy trailer.  I could buy one for about $10K or so, but fark that.  I'm thinking of getting an old Jeep trailer (we've got a DRMO facility here in town) and rebuilding it how I want it.  Slide out drawers for the stove, propane tank, roof top tent on top, storage for food, a fridge, charcoal grill, cooking stuff, water, etc.  Hell, I'll even have a shiatter and shower when I'm done.

Our campsite had 3 fridges. A 600 sqft pavilion style tent. A bar made of two folding tables. A blender. And mood lighting. We put together 2 meals a day, breakfast and dinner, feeding 30+ people.

NEWS FLASH, dipshiats:  Most state parks have hotels nearby.   You can tramp around in the woods all day, then go back to your room take a hot shower, eat dinner in the restaurant and sit in the jacuzzi drinking rum for the rest of the night.

Yeah, but "hardocore" naturists deserve to by mocked just like "hardcore" anything else.  That whole "stop liking what I don't like" mentality is ludicrous.  My son and I love backpacking. It's kind of our "thing" but I never turn down an opportunity to go R.V.ing with my parents when they offer.  Enjoying one doesn't mean you can't enjoy the other.  If I had money to throw around, I'd probably do this.  It looks fun.

L out loud is off in the exploring part of the wilderness that is not the part of civilization where there is the toilets and the hot and cold running waters, only the cold running waters of the woods and rocks and wildlife with the stinging and biting and a lot of accessories. So Meow is out glamping, I'm sure.

I agree gear is expensive but you buy it once and if you made the right choice and take care of it that gear will last a lifetime.  Your trailer idea sound cool!  Now that's what I'd call for real car camping!

There's a middle ground.  Where we go there's a "lower" area that has tents side by side as far as the eye can see but going up into the mountain just a little bit there are several sites that are just areas cleared of underbrush enough to set up a couple of dome tents in with wood bollards to keep vehicles out.  Sites are several hundred yards apart in most cases with none closer than about 100 yards and separated by heavy trees and brush.  Its great for 2-3 couples to just park the trucks, pack the stuff off to the site (50-60 yards usually) and set up for a weekend.
