Lake County might as well be Georgia or Alabama, it's in the "the farther north you go the farther south you are" part of Florida.

I readily admit I'm an asshole. That's fairly well-known. But even I have trouble visualizing just how much of an asshole you have to be in order to literally cut off everyone else's fun to target one group of people who are required by law to attend the school you oversee.

There's a long tradition of this in Florida. A while back some school district, I forget which one, threatened to cancel the day off for Good Friday after Muslim parents asked if the district could give kids a day off for Eid as well. Since the district knew that they didn't have a leg to stand on, equal protection wise, by specifically giving one religious holiday off and not another, they were just going to cancel all of it. The Muslim parents responded with a more diplomatic version of, "No, you dumbasses, we asked for this but don't take away other people's ability to practice their religion just because you don't like us, just give them Good Friday back and we'll forget this ever happened."

From the Orlando Sentinel: Howard said he was worried about the clubs that would be lost under stricter rules. "I am very concerned that one club would push out the remainder of the clubs that are doing good things," he said.

Tod Howard says its gay kids' fault for applying to be a club in the first place. Mr. Howard seems to think that he has no moral responsibility to be accountable for his actions in eliminating these school clubs, even though he is proposing to do it.

I think the school board may be filling up my own list here:

Well, actually I was thinking it might be interpreted as an example of a pre-existing after-school Gay-Straight Alliance club, and that would just raise ALL kinds of hell

That sounds about right. Can't very well allow equality, so toss everything instead! It's the smart thing to do.

Yeah, those gays AND straights. Talk about nerve...

Obviously, the only clubs that are worthy will have to be the asexual ones. I'm sure that they'll stop all those dances and such to prevent any whiff of sexuality from entering their schools. Probably have their cheerleaders in flannel sweatsuits just to be safe...

Hey - the same people usually also claim not to like "transfer of wealth schemes" - so I think there's a pretty high level of cognitive dissonance at work here.

This is definitely really bad, but I don't think it's as bad as cancelling a school's prom because you don't want to invite a lesbian couple, scheduling a private prom and later cancelling it because you STILL don't want to invite that lesbian couple, and then scheduling a fake prom for the lesbian couple so the rest of the students can attend a second private prom and brag on Facebook about farking with the lesbian couple afterward. Now if the school later starts providing funds and rooms for private clubs that duplicate all pre-existing school clubs but refuse to do so for the GSA, then yeah, it'll be as bad.

I remember that story. I was surprised the judge involved in the legal case didn't just utterly lose their shiat on the bench with all the shenanigans the school pulled.

Ah, yes, I did forget to mention that part. Though TBH, once you've already transcended to supervillain levels of asshattery, there's nowhere else to go except to more powerful supervillains. Maybe they hit the Galactus-level?

Fischer said the district should focus on education and that "social engineering" is not the job of the School Board. "It is not our job to socially mentor students, but to educate them," she said.

Except healthy social development is an aspect of education to create well-adjusted, collaborative students able to work with the widest variety of people. No matter what you do, you will have an influence on social development, whether partitioning students from one another or showing disfavor to a certain group of students. Let me guess, Mrs. Fischer, you have no experience in education?

There may have been others, but Broward School District was one. Man, those people at the hearing were terrible. I love this quote from the article here:

She also noted that from 2007 to 2013, Broward schools were closed every Good Friday, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and 80 percent of the time for Hanukkah and 50 percent of the time for Passover, even though they are not federal holidays.

"It seems like they're giving special rights to Islam," Tea Party protestor Scott McNeeds told WPEC outside the meeting. "That's how politics works, things happen gradually."

This kind of BS always reminds of this event from the 60s. The pool owner in the photo would rather dump acid in the pool than allow black people to swim in it. See also: restaurant owners who shut their businesses down so they wouldn't have to serve black customers.

1. Why would schools need to be invovled in an "after school" club to begin with? Don't they have enough during school issues to deal with?

2. If gays and straights want to have an alliance why do they need a school sponsorship to do it?

3. How would this "alliance' support the school curriculum?

4. You know who else formed an alliance?

This reminds me of what happened in my home town as a kid. The local fundamentalists complained to the school board about the Halloween parties being held in the elementary schools. Per their complaint, the parties were "celebrating Satan" or something like that, this wanted them banned. The school board's solution was quite the fark you; they banned all religion related parties. No Easter near spring break, no Christmas or even "holidays" parties just before winter break.

Halloween and holiday parties returned a few years later once the point was made.

1 and 2 have similar answers: te clubs want to use school property an resources, thus the connection.

1. All kids on school property need to be under a teacher's eye or on their way to or from such a state. Any after school club on school grounds needs a teacher there or insurance and parents go apeshiat.

2. They don't. They have a moral obligation to do it in protest of the rules just to fark with the school.

3. Clubs are extra-curricular. By definition they're not involved with the curriculum.

4. The Blacks and the Potters. It was called "The Order of the Phoenix"
