The Beach Boys used something called "Ribbon Control". You move a stylus along a resistive ribbon to get that sound; if you look at a live video you can see it.

A Theremin looks very different, but you could get the sound confused. Jimmy Page uses one with a reverb in "The Song Remains the Same" (movie) to get a howling sound during "Dazed and Confused".

Upon further research,

Tanner used his device on the studio recordings.

The Beach Boys used ribbon control for live performances.

The sound was pretty much the same.

I always wondered how the Beach Boys made 2 Theramin riffs in a row sound identical, something that's for all intents and purposes impossible. I figured they "played" the riff once then duped it in the studio, but even the first riff sounds way too "clean" to be real Theramin. This Tanner instrument sounds like Theremin-lite.

I will give the guy props for playing in the Glenn Miller Orchestra. I meet some band members back in the 70s. Mostly young musicians who didn't care about the legend; they just wanted it on their resume'.

/BTW, the guy who claims to have invented the bubble machine for Lawrence Welk is buried in Norfolk, VA
