Why do these fraternities always have to have themed parties? And why do the themes of these parties always have to be derogatory towards other races, cultures or peoples heritage? If they must have a themed party, can't they think up a theme that doesn't insult somebodies race, culture or heritage? Are they just that small minded that that is the only thing they can think of?

You had a HOMELESS party?  That is HILARIOUS!  What's better than making fun of drug addicts and the mentally ill?  Their lives are terrible!  We're so clever!
Seriously, you're awful.  The reason this party is inappropriate is because it perpetuates the "othering" of a minority group instead of fostering an atmosphere of inclusion.  Watch "Animal House", have a toga party, and quit being such a ridiculous asshole.

The email invitation closed with a mocking "Chank You."

I don't get it, Asians don't replace "T" with a "C".

"The Brothers of Kappa Sigma understand the unfortunate negative impact their event has had on the Duke community," Riker wrote. "Through this experience, we welcome the opportunity to become more socially aware Greeks, Duke students and human beings."

Oh give me a break.  If you're 18+ years old and you don't know by now that would be offensive you're a clod.  Apparently that's a lot of the frat people at Duke.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: What is reverse racism?

Acceptance?

JosephFinn: So what?

So what? Cultural acceptance is not the same as political correctness. Once you truly accept another culture as equals, you can start bustin' their chops. In other words, "racist" parties like this one are a good sign that the culture has assimilated nicely.

There was a time when an "Asian party" was ambushing five Chinamen at night with crow bars, beating them to death, and burying their heathen bodies 25 feet down under the railroad bed. THAT is racism. THAT is a social problem. This is a drinking party.

East Asia has the most racism by volume and per-capita. Despite giant moral failings like that by Western standards, they're simultaneously admired for their ability to perform well on standardized tests and their work ethic, which is really only high because otherwise you flounder in their societies and they don't stoop to pick up those who fall with a billion replacements outside the door asking to be let in.

I keep hearing this. Yet when I go to asia there's only reverse racism towards me. What are you, asian? Else please cite something...

It's not racist when minorities do it.

Whites are a minority in a lot of departments in top tier schools while Asians are taking over.

I believe in equal rights.  I do not belive in special privileges.  How does that make me racist?

You probably mean well.  But some I'm-late-to-the-thread points:

In my experience, [Culture] Student Associations are usually not strictly limited to people of that ethnic group. They're also open to others who want to learn about the culture and help with club events.  Regardless, they also function as a place where people who stand out as minorities in daily life can hang out with others who share their culture, language and/or phenotype. Being different can be alienating, especially if that difference gets unflatteringly emphasized on the regular.

White people still have the most racial privilege in America.  So in most situations, making fun of white people (i.e. a honky party) is not equivalent to parties mocking other races.  For most white folks it's just fun self-deprecation.  For many minorities it's an unpleasant reminder that harmful, belittling stereotypes still persist.

(There's definitely a lot of racism in Asia too; that doesn't excuse it here or anywhere else.)

What special privilege?  You can join the Asian Students Association.  Hell, the one or two "Asian" organizations I belonged to in undergrad and law school had white members.  BFD.

That is something idiots always say to justified their bigotry. And if you ask them if they ever tried to join one of these organizations they will always tell you no, but they know for a fact that they wouldn't let them join.

Pretty much this. I was vice president of the Asian American club at my college and we not only had non-Asian members but a couple were even club officers at various points.

/was also in a mostly white fraternity
//we never threw any "ethnic"-themed parties though

Have you never met a frat guy before?

All of you Farkers are hating on a tradition you know nothing about, you all must have been pencil-necked pizza-faced geeks in the Chess Club real people with real friends, fraternity brothers get access to more top-shelf worn out sorority sister pussy than you could shake a stick at, and the relationships you make pay for in the Brotherhood will last you a lifetime.

I don't think having a themed party based on another country is racist.  People have Oktoberfest parties and dress in Lederhosen.  People have 1001 Arabian nights parties and dress like Sinbad or a farking sheikh.  So farking what?  People all over the world go to costume parties like these.  I'm just glad I have zero to do with American college campuses where you're constantly being assaulted by the PC brigade.

I find this story interesting because Asians, out of all the minorities in this nation, have been the least vocal about racism. This kind of stuff might not be the best jump off point just because it's not a serious problem, you can't expect privileged white frat people to not throw ignorant drunk frat parties.

Pretty sure a Honky Frat Party involves tea bagging by other males and sticking ping pong balls up the drunk guys arse, while still claiming to be straight.
/Never understood what would make a 18-22 y/o straight male think it's funny to even want their junk near another man's body

"We are protesting the culture of acceptance at these kinds of things," Ting-Ting Zhou, president of the Asian Students Association, told the Chronicle.

Couldn't they have picked someone with a less stereotypically Asian name to be their spokesman? That's like having a guy name Nacho Beanero as the head of the Mexican Club or some shiat.
