East Asia has the most racism by volume and per-capita. Despite giant moral failings like that by Western standards, they're simultaneously admired for their ability to perform well on standardized tests and their work ethic, which is really only high because otherwise you flounder in their societies and they don't stoop to pick up those who fall with a billion replacements outside the door asking to be let in.

Yes, but again, it's an Asian themed party and you can't have an authentic atmosphere without some of that exotic oriental prejudice.

For added realism, they can set up shops in front of the Black Students' Union and charge them extra for groceries and follow the customers around inside.

People get bent out of shiat too easily these days.  Besides, the Asian Students Association is a racist organization so fark 'em.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: What is reverse racism?

Acceptance?

JosephFinn: So what?

So what? Cultural acceptance is not the same as political correctness. Once you truly accept another culture as equals, you can start bustin' their chops. In other words, "racist" parties like this one are a good sign that the culture has assimilated nicely.

There was a time when an "Asian party" was ambushing five Chinamen at night with crow bars, beating them to death, and burying their heathen bodies 25 feet down under the railroad bed. THAT is racism. THAT is a social problem. This is a drinking party.

The email invitation closed with a mocking "Chank You."

I don't get it, Asians don't replace "T" with a "C".

"The Brothers of Kappa Sigma understand the unfortunate negative impact their event has had on the Duke community," Riker wrote. "Through this experience, we welcome the opportunity to become more socially aware Greeks, Duke students and human beings."

Oh give me a break.  If you're 18+ years old and you don't know by now that would be offensive you're a clod.  Apparently that's a lot of the frat people at Duke.

A proper response from the Asian Association would be to hold some kind of Honky Party where you wear dirty overalls and a wife beater, chug Bud Light and bourbon, and have a toy car spin counter clockwise the entire time to mock NASCAR. I'd go to that party.

I find this story interesting because Asians, out of all the minorities in this nation, have been the least vocal about racism. You had a HOMELESS party?  That is HILARIOUS!  What's better than making fun of drug addicts and the mentally ill?  Their lives are terrible!  We're so clever!
Seriously, you're awful.  The reason this party is inappropriate is because it perpetuates the "othering" of a minority group instead of fostering an atmosphere of inclusion.  Watch "Animal House", have a toga party, and quit being such a ridiculous asshole.

Why do these fraternities always have to have themed parties? And why do the themes of these parties always have to be derogatory towards other races, cultures or peoples heritage? If they must have a themed party, can't they think up a theme that doesn't insult somebodies race, culture or heritage? Are they just that small minded that that is the only thing they can think of?

You had a HOMELESS party?  That is HILARIOUS!  What's better than making fun of drug addicts and the mentally ill?  Their lives are terrible!  We're so clever!
Seriously, you're awful.  The reason this party is inappropriate is because it perpetuates the "othering" of a minority group instead of fostering an atmosphere of inclusion.  Watch "Animal House", have a toga party, and quit being such a ridiculous asshole.

So you're okay with stereotyping Greeks , huh?  Just another farkin hypocritical racist

I don't think having a themed party based on another country is racist.  People have Oktoberfest parties and dress in Lederhosen.  People have 1001 Arabian nights parties and dress like Sinbad or a farking sheikh.  So farking what?  People all over the world go to costume parties like these.  I'm just glad I have zero to do with American college campuses where you're constantly being assaulted by the PC brigade.

Fraternities have themed parties because they're fun.

But, it's only the really, really stupid chapters that have themes that are derogatory towards anyone.  But, of course, offensive parties are the only ones that are going to actually make the news.

I was a Kappa Sigma (not at Duke, though) and all our parties were pretty innocuous.  For example, every Fall, we'd have a pledge mud wrestling party (in which our pledges would mud wrestle against sorority pledges, I think they were Kappa Kappa Gammas).  Every spring we'd have a luau.  Other themed parties that I remember: 80s party, punk party, black light party.  We never once had a "dress up as a racial or ethnic minority" party...and, no one ever suggested it.

The guys at Duke are just a bunch of morons.  But, not every chapter of every fraternity is like that.

When I went to work in Japan, some Spanish friends sent me pictures to let me know they were thinking of me. I was a little shocked at first. Spanish people just don't think about racism the way Americans do, I guess. To be fair, the second picture was from Carnaval where it's typical for people to dress in costume.

I had a business trip to Spain recently and I was surprised to see a Spanish TV personality on a game show pull the old "me Chinee" eye gesture.  Immediately following a trivia question pertaining to Asia.  Wow - very sensitive of them.

As someone that's part Irish.  I take no offense at St. Pat parties.  Nor do I get offended at the lazy claim(it's true, I'm very lazy), or alcoholic stereotype.  I'm not an alcoholic, but I certainly enjoy drunkeness occasionally.

I don't feel like these parties make the Irish less of a people, or make them look worse, or any of that PC bullshiat.  It's a fun caricature of a culture that is used as an excuse to party.  If anyone forms a negative opinion of the Irish based on a party then it's their own mental shortcoming, not a reason to protest the parties.

The major point that I wanted to get across was that there was nothing unusual in dress that a person wouldn't have been perfectly comfortable wearing at ANY outdoor warm-weather party.  We were not mocking Pacific Islanders.

Again, the main point of the luau was the food and drink, not the dress.  The food was fantastic.  The pig was just the centerpiece.  Our cook and her assistant would work for days to get everything right.  Also, there was a Hawaiian dance group on campus that we usually invited to perform.  And, if we could get an authentic musical group to provide live entertainment, we'd do that, too.

So do certain STD's.

eraser8: liam76: So why didn't you answer "no" the simple yes or no questions I asked the first two times?

You asked about more than just grass skirts and coconut bras.  You also asked about Hawaiian shirts.  And, there might have been a few of those...although I never wore one (for the simple reason that I didn't own any).  We had one guy in the house from Hawaii (but, he was a white guy) and he might have worn something more tradition...but, I don't remember.

The major point that I wanted to get across was that there was nothing unusual in dress that a person wouldn't have been perfectly comfortable wearing at ANY outdoor warm-weather party.  We were not mocking Pacific Islanders.

liam76: A pig roast where leis were given out is a pretty weak luau in my book,

Again, the main point of the luau was the food and drink, not the dress.  The food was fantastic.  The pig was just the centerpiece.  Our cook and her assistant would work for days to get everything right.  Also, there was a Hawaiian dance group on campus that we usually invited to perform.  And, if we could get an authentic musical group to provide live entertainment, we'd do that, too.

You're just getting your chain yanked. No matter what you say it will be wrong. Just let it go.

One of my favorite things about Dengue Fever is the paroxysm of bad writing they provoke among PC music critics who claim it's not "authentic" Thai music.

Why would it be authentic Thai music?  The singer is Khmer, if I'm not mistaken....

You see no disconenct between saying he had a luau and never had a party stereotyping ethnic minorities?

Everyone I have been to has had people dressing like caricatures of Hawaiians.

Everyone I have heard of has had people dressing like caricatures of Hawaiians.

Every picture on a GIS has had people dressing like caricatures of Hawaiians.

So when he wouldn't respond to specific simple yes or no questions abotu dress, I was (and am) a bit suspiscious.

Why so uptight? I thought that only uptight people concerned themselves with this sort of thing?

Racism is the idea that one's own race is superior.

What those college kids are doing is perpetuating a stereotype, one that that is detrimental to their image in our society.

What I was imagining is that they mock this group of Kappa Sigma douche bags. That's hardly insulting to all white people. Especially anyone that's actually gone to school with Kappa Sigma douche bags.

Me mocking how silly your ideas on this are isn't me being uptight.

I have been to "red neck" parties.

I went to the blossom festival in DC and a friend of mine goyza party in japanese traditional clothes.

I think it take s alot more than costumes shown in those pictures for something to be labeled racist.

That is something idiots always say to justified their bigotry. And if you ask them if they ever tried to join one of these organizations they will always tell you no, but they know for a fact that they wouldn't let them join.

When I was in high school we had slave day where popular kids bought and sold he each other. It was an official school sanctioned (Spirit/Homecoming week) event. We're talking San Francisco area intercity school in the 1980's.  This was a school that was evenly mixed racially.

eraser8: ongbok: Why do these fraternities always have to have themed parties? And why do the themes of these parties always have to be derogatory towards other races, cultures or peoples heritage?

What?  No toga parties?  Your chapter sucked.

You probably mean well.  But some I'm-late-to-the-thread points:

In my experience, [Culture] Student Associations are usually not strictly limited to people of that ethnic group. They're also open to others who want to learn about the culture and help with club events.  Regardless, they also function as a place where people who stand out as minorities in daily life can hang out with others who share their culture, language and/or phenotype. Being different can be alienating, especially if that difference gets unflatteringly emphasized on the regular.

White people still have the most racial privilege in America.  So in most situations, making fun of white people (i.e. a honky party) is not equivalent to parties mocking other races.  For most white folks it's just fun self-deprecation.  For many minorities it's an unpleasant reminder that harmful, belittling stereotypes still persist.

(There's definitely a lot of racism in Asia too; that doesn't excuse it here or anywhere else.)

Okay but throwing those partys in a fun way makes the frat insensitive, not racist.   Too many people are too willing to throw out those terms.

Insensitivity and racism, in this case, are the same thing.

People are often sensitive about race because it's still an issue.
That's not to say the "race card" is always justified.  It's not.  Just try to understand some of the reasons why people get concerned about racism. Getting defensive doesn't help, because it's usually not you as an individual who's being criticized - it's the culture that still contains a worrisome amount of prejudiced cockfaces.  You're in a much better position to argue about oversensitivity if you first think about things from the other side and acknowledge that perspective.
