(Sports Illustrated)   It's National Signing Day. Who will land the number one class? Who's paying who what? Who's going where? Does it even matter? Who will have the best hat game prop? Let us all celebrate or berate the decision of 18-year-old kids. Hooray football   (sportsillustrated.cnn.com) divider line 70

As far as I care, this guy made the best decision on his National Signing Day:

Stayed out of football, escaped TBI, and still made his Goodell-free millions.

Damn, I thought this was going to be about sign language, so I snapped a bunch of stills from my all-time favourite signed documentary, "Murder at the World Cup". No going back now.

Signing day. When the moods of grown men depend on the whim of teenagers. :-)

/Hmm, describes parenthood pretty well too
//I hope NC State gets a nice surprise. It's a meh class but that's no surprise after the coaching change.

Signing day is for high-schoolers going into college. He did play college football. It was the NFL draft that he said "no" to.

So is Ole Miss paying players this year, or are players just lassoing a rising star?

The Vols picked up a couple of 4 star WRs which will help a lot. It's an up hill battle for us anyway

Anyone want to explain how Ole Miss (with a horrible track record in the SEC) just managed to sign such a stellar class?

If you were a statistician you would pinpoint this one as being well outside the norm of expected results.   Either Hugh Freeze is the greatest recruiter who ever lived, or something is up in Oxford that isn't kosher.

Playing time is important to a lot of highly-ranked recruits who don't want to sit behind players they think they might be better than anyway. Plus, there's something of a ripple effect; Nkemdiche, the number 1 prospect, was a heavy, heavy lean toward Ole Miss for months because of his brother being there, which probably caused other highly-ranked recruits to gravitate more toward Oxford. A lot of these recruits know each other and influence each others' decisions, too.

There's at least a quite plausible reason for the #1 guy since his older brother is there, but yeah, I guess their boosters finally decided to throw some money around, because getting multiple other 5 star guys looks a little dodgy.

Ordinarily when you see some middle aged men drooling at the chance to exploit the physical attributes of a teenager on TV, Chris Hanson suddenly appears. But, on "National Signing Day," we have ESPN going ga-ga and letting 17 year old kids hold press conferences.

Which is the main reason that this is where I say "whoa, I like football a lot...but I'm not going to like it THAT much." It's f*cking creepy. Even creepier than the NFL draft, which is also really creepy.

And I really don't see how people refuse to see the slave auction aspect of the NFL combine/draft because there's money involved. Man, they're still evaluating a bunch of young (mostly black) people, having them perform a battery of tests for them, where performance will increase or decrease their "value", then talking about them and what kind of work they can do and how much they might be expected to produce for their billionaire owner.

Refuse to see something that isn't there you mean? Anything that is 100% voluntary and that can lead to getting compensated to the tune of millions of dollars is about as far away from slavery as something can get.

No different than a bodybuilding competition, a beauty pagent or, as MP01 pointed out, most job interviews.

Personally I find any comparison of this to slavery distasteful and an affront to anyone who has, is or will experience actual human trafficking/slavery

the Ole Miss thing is kinda sketchy to say the least. We got a couple of decent WRs and I think Dobbs will be a QB in Jones' scheme but other than that, yeah pretty mediocre

I love when people start smelling something foul on another program when they don't dare smell the stench on the program they follow.

and the vols have signed approximately three offensive linemen (all only 3 stars at that) in the last two years.  dobbs is going to get killed in 2014.  which is a shame, i heard he's a smart kid who actually wanted to get an education, but instead will leave knoxvegas in a body bag.

I'm waiting for round-the-clock coverage of decisions by elementary school and middle school parents on where their football-playing sons will go to high school.

"And here's Beaufield Elementary's hottest prospect, little Timmy Dawkins. He can run pretty fast when the girls are chasing him, but he won't eat his vegetables, which is causing USC to rethink its offer to him for the 2021 signing class."

USC?  Surely you jest.  It's looking likely they'll lose a former commitment to farking Kentucky!

I'm sure there's some shenanigans with every program, but when you're pulling a top 10 overall recruit, #1 WR, who is from the Chicago area, and it's Ole Miss that's pulling him?  Really?  Not Michigan, not Notre Dame, not one of the name brand SEC programs, but freaking Ole Miss?  You can understand why people might find that more suspicious than usual.

I was trying to avoid the usual Southeastern Conference suspects, and it seems like I remember reading that USC once had a pretty good little ol' team out there. (Talking California, not South Carolina.)

Yeah well, I take it akin to an arms race:  Now country "X" may have advanced weapons similar to ours and therefore our hegemony is threatened.

Same shiat, just on a football field and not on a geo-political sphere.

I don't think tracking it on the day of is so bad.  What's pathetic are the people who pay subscriptions to track this.  Or even worse, the neckbeards who get on twitter to yell at high school recruits who don't pick the right school (which that person probably didn't even attend themselves.)

I always figured the pages you pay for were only used by lazy college recruiters who want ESPN to do their job for them, but please if anyone who is a regular fan pays for high school student highlights please step forward now so we can all point and laugh

The number one ranked RB in the country(according to Rivals.com), Taquan Mizzell, has signed with Virginia; the only 5-star recruit nabbed by UVA. He's already made a name for himself in Charlottesville, though, as he was arrested for underage drinking on his official visit to UVA. Welcome to Hooville, Taquan; you're gonna fit right in.

yeah i can't believe grown ass men would think it's a good idea to tweet at kids they don't even know.  that's just creepy.  and why people pay i have no idea.  there's plenty of free information out there and knowing more useless shiat isn't going to actually change what the kids decide.  but of course college football fans follow national signing day.  it's the college draft.  you see who sign and then dream big or weep quietly while biatching about the coaching staff.  nfl fans do it on draft day, college fans do it on national signing day.

They may only be teenagers, but they recognize fail when they smell it.  Mack Brown has lost control of that program and should have gutted the coaching staff and started from scratch this offseason.

Before last year I think our best class had 1 high ranking 3 star or 1 4 star (ESPN) recruit.  This year we have 12 4 star recruits.  It's good to be gold!

MSU tried to cheat with Cam Newton and didn't get punished.  With this class of recruits, there is more smoke.

But being a SEC school, we will never see if there is fire.

Damn, I just looked at the signings...Saban doesn't rebuild, he reloads.

I think most of his pitch is that he runs a pro-style O and D, and they'll get noticed in the way the NFL wants, none of the gimmicky spread shiat.

It's pretty interesting that 4-5 star players are willing to sit on the bench and wait their turn.
