I would say changing their stances on birth control, abortion, blaming and shafting rape victims, gay rights, and several other points might,  just might, be a bigger impediment to the GOP in courting women voters. Especially young women voters in states and regions that the GOP needs to make gains in.

But nice way to capitalize on the hot topic for some site hits.

Really. Do you think your average woman voter (who isn't voting GOP like a religion) is suddenly going to say, "Hey! They got rid of the NRA! Who cares if this guy defended anti-abortion legislation and voted to de-fund domestic violence shelters. NO MORE GUNS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"? <-it's at this point where this hypothetical female finds the nearest person with a camera and flashes her tits.

2013-02-06 10:02:06 AM
there's also that 'pro-rape' thing the GOP could work on.  that turns a lot of women off.

Well that's a simple fix. Have the NRA write a book called "50 Shades of Gun Metal Grey", women will love guns by next month.

Where is there any evidence at all that ditching the NRA would improve the gender gap? Or is this just another story the GOP is telling themselves to make themselves feel better?

at this point I'm half convinced that damn near every story we hear is just something that the GOP is telling itself to make themselves feel better.

YES.  That's it!  You've figured it out!  Well done, you crafty devil!

Ah, Steve LaTourette, an exceptionally "sane and sensible" Republican who is yet neither sane nor sensible enough to leave the party.  He can kiss my ass.

DamnYankees: Where is there any evidence at all that ditching the NRA would improve the gender gap? Or is this just another story the GOP is telling themselves to make themselves feel better?

No, I think the story the GOP is telling themselves to make themselves feel better is precisely what LaTourette is speaking out against.

2013-02-06 11:06:28 AM
LaTourette - this guy was on Real Time last Friday, I believe. A reasonable man. I doubt we would agree on much, but it appears we could have a civil discussion.

2013-02-06 11:06:44 AM
To be fair, using a gun is the only way most Republicans can get women any more.

2013-02-06 11:07:39 AM
Almost 20 years ago now I went to law school with a woman who was having a not-very-secret affair with LaTourette (when she wasn't banging our Federal Courts prof). That has nothing to do with TFA or anything else, but I just wanted to mention it. Carry on.

2013-02-06 11:09:46 AM
I voted for Steve a number of times - was a very reasonable lawmaker and tended not to say blindingly idiotic things all the time.  He decided that being in congress was too much of a PITA to bother with anymore - my guess is the current base thought he was just another RINO anyway.

I post this on FB everytime gun control starts trending in my feed.

It doesn't go over so well with my NRA friends, except the one guy who is a dead ringer for this guy.

-People, take it easy. We're all upset about Mr. Obama's plan to, uh, grab our guns. It is time for decisive action. I have here a polite but firm letter to Mr. Obama's underlings, who with some cajoling, will pass it along to him or at least give him the gist of it.
-[whispering] Sir, a lot of people are stroking guns.
-Also it has been brought to my attention that a number of you are stroking guns. Therefore I will step aside and open up the floor.

2013-02-06 11:17:26 AM
That way, he said, people could still buy weapons at temporary gun shows that might not be able to because a background check might not be complete before the gun show closed. LaTourette said some supporters of closing the loophole were "being too cute by half," and hoping that the potential time constraints on background checks would make gun shows unworkable.

WTF? Is this really a concern for these people? That having to do background checks would destroy gun shows?
The last time I bought a gun at a store, the background check took something like 5 minutes. One minute of the guy reading my name, DOB, and SSN into a phone, and 4 minutes of waiting for some database's gears to turn. And that was better than ten years ago - I'm sure they've got a website set up to automate it by now.

He looks smarmy, that's his biggest problem, and acts like a douche.  The really should have a PR person in this position.  A hot woman that has defended herself from a rapist with a gun, or a former soldier and hero that helped armed Iraqi  citizens so they could fight terrorists, something like that, not some tool bag that looks like newt Gingrich's taller and sleezily handsome brother.

I live in the district too, I voted for him when he ran against Capri Cafaro. He left to be a lobbyist. He's already violated the "wait one year" rule, he did it 3 days after he left office. Although I appreciated his moderate stances on many issues, at the end of the day he's just another greedy politician.

"I think the Republican Party, at its peril, is seen as in the pocket of the NRA and not willing to engage in the conversation," LaTourette said [...] "To just say, 'No, we're not even going to have a conversation,' that's a perception [the GOP] shouldn't have,"

RINO!

Yeah. Women sure seem to be fixated on that whole "We blame women who get raped and want to force them to birth the child of their attacker" thing.

Silly women.

Subby, they are doing it for the other guys, not women.

2013-02-06 12:04:09 PM
I don't see how the gun issue is really divided along gender lines. If they really want to woo the women back, they need to talk about rape more. A lot more. The reason women didn't vote for them is because they didn't obsess about rape enough. Rape.

Not (just) anti-choice . . . anti-contraception (wtf?) and anti-women's health (shutting down Planned Parenthood, e.g.) . . . and pro-rape . . . and anti-equal-pay (Ledbetter) . . . it's a long list

I am actually somewhat curious, haven't seen numbers on the gender breakdown on guns . . . I will admit that guns are one of the issues that I find almost entirely inscrutable, so any additional insight would be welcome.

In my experience, female hicks do like guns and trucks. I remember in college trying to work my magic with a couple of townie girls, and they giggled and rolled their eyes and generally acted like I was some 18th century French dandy because I was drinking scotch instead of Budweiser.

There's a reason they got Charlton Heston in there to be their public face, until he was unable to do the job.  LaPierre is incapable of making a persuasive argument for gun rights.  All he can do is shout down someone who wants even the mildest restrictions on gun ownership.  But just insulting your opponents is not having a debate.

The last time I bought a gun at a gun show it took 5 minutes for the on-line background check, so no, it's not a real problem.

2013-02-06 02:21:38 PM
Gun control doesn't really explain why I haven't and won't ever vote GOP. The GOP to me represents a party that hates the poor, would have no issue denying me an abortion or birth control, would be just fine cutting my mom and fiances access to medical help, appears to hate minorities,a party that would sacrifice all for the tiny top percent of the population that has the majority of the money and for corporate greed. So yeah whether they pull their heads out of their asses on the NRA doesn't really matter to me as much as everything else I just listed.

2013-02-06 02:33:35 PM
As a woman I want my constitutional right to own a gun to be protected. I want women to stop murdering their babies because they are too dumb or too much of a slut to abstain or use birth control. That said, I will continue to vote for the most liberal candidates because Republicans hate the sick and the poor and they love war. It does no good to protect constitutional rights, save the unborn and fight the immorality of same sex marriage if you are so greedy that you would rather let a poor, sick person die than spend a little money.

I agree there are a few out there but they are definitely in the minority of the female population.
