When I get my 3D printer there will be no need to go to a Dollar Store again.  I look forward to the day when I don't have to associate with the scum that shop there.

What do you even buy there? I just can't bring myself to trust that anything I buy there won't somehow poison me.

That makes slightly more sense. I've gone in to them and just left empty handed after picturing my face melting off from using a dollar store wash cloth.

What if I buy poison there?  Will it be so shoddy it will actually bring stuff back to life?

Dollar Store is doing a great job combating Walmart. If you live in the sticks, like I choose to do. It's a 20 minute drive to a grocery. But the Dollar store is 5 minutes away. You can get basic sundry items and not have to deal with crowds of people.

And these stores are everywhere. It's convenient.

I wonder if the writer says the same thing about cvs/Walgreens which are on every corner.

As gas prices continue to rise and the economy just keeps getting worse, 50 Cent stores will start popping up and crush these gouging Dollar stores.  Taxes are going up and mandatory health insurance costs will skyrocket.  People cannot afford the dollar stores anymore.

This.  Plus you don't have to get all dressed up like when going to Walmart.

Not a bad place to pick up canned goods. Just pick the ones that don't have dents/bulges in them as those will likely kill you. And it's hard to go wrong with the chips/soda.

Sort of a misleading headline. Dollar General and Family Dollar aren't really "dollar" stores...they are more like "5 and dime" stores, or what a modern CVS is, with clothing thrown in, instead of a Pharmacy, and not as overpriced.
\They're pretty convenient for household basics (socks, box of cereal, soap, etc.)
\Don't have to get dressed up like I'm going to Walmart

CSB:

My grandmother ran a 5 and dime for 40 years, she closed it in 1985 stating "nobody shops at a 5 & dime any more" when a Dollar general opened in 2006 in her old store space that had been vacant since she closed, she was thrilled and talked with the manager about where she had staged the merchandise when she ran her store, he took some of her advice.

I like the coffee, jars of Kosher Dill Pickles, and large cans of Hunt's spaghetti sauce, at Dollar Tree. Oh, and they have packages of little pizza dough, already baked, just add sauce and toppings.

The next bubble will be frozen yogurt with toppings places.

I vote for this.  Those places have popped up everywhere around here...like a case of chicken pox.  A delicious case of chicken pox.

/sometimes I forget to even add the yogurt.

paper plates, cups...sometimes broom, dustpan, plastic containers..not too much

most food there is cheaper at a grocery store and less suspect

So the recession created a new market that was successfully exploited? That shouldn't be a surprise, really, since it's how things are supposed to work.

Also a good place for wrapping paper, cards and party supplies (fun pencil packs, stickers, bows, erasers)

Dollar General is not a dollar store. A few things in there are a dollar. Most of their merchandise costs more than a dollar. It's more like a CVS without a pharmacy.

//It's a shiathole.

Same here. I buy a good portion of my groceries at the Dollar Tree because it's not economical to buy elsewhere. I'm single so there's no need to buy in bulk.

I work full-time doing food service and get free food five days of the week. I sustain myself on cereal, frozen vegetables, and some frozen convenience food the other two days a week (my Dollar Tree has a frozen foods section!)

Also the cereal. Not the best but for the price of a big box of cereal (3.00) I can choose three smaller boxes and get more of a variety in.

Yes, but it's a golden age for the repo business. One that will never end.

Cheap toys I give to poor kids for Christmas.

I shop at DG all the time and am not afraid to admit it or even recommend it.  Paper towels, TP, chapstick, name-brand bottled water, name-brand chips/snacks, light bulbs, blow up dolls, notebooks, pens/pencils, deodorant, shampoo, soap, etc.  All things people need and all at 65-75% of the cost of buying it elsewhere.

Knock Knock.

Who's there?

Someone.

Someone who?

Someone that doesn't understand the concept of a Dollar General Store, that's who.

Ahem to that brother. I know I've had to limit what I spend at the dollar store, gotta stretch every cent. That means anything non-perishable I try to get off Craigslist or Chinese re-sellers on eBay  Been lucky enough to stay fed by supplementing my food budget with hunting, fishing and gardening but when these healthcare costs really start to ratchet up as more legislation goes into effect I'm not sure what I'll do.

75 cents?!? Good lord, that's a lot of money! How about I give you a nickel and you make me a Colonel!

If I got to go to a soul-crushing store, I prefer it be small so I can get in and out fast. The fact I can walk to a Family Dollar makes it a tolerable place. I went to a Dollar Tree in Orlando a couple of weeks ago that made me want to kill myself, though.

There is a starbucks in the dollar store near me that has a dollar general in it and in the dollar general is a lemon-aid stand.
Surely this means something.

We used to go to Target for paper towels, dish soap, etc. Then they opened up a Dollar General around the corner... Prices are about the same and so close by, and they've got the stuff like bread and milk and a pretty fair bit of food. Plus socks, cat litter, etc. Put that stuff close to people and save them the hassle of having to go several miles because they're out of Cascade, and you've got a winner. I think you'll be seeing these places opening up for a while.

If I wanted cheap Chinese crap that'll fall apart after just a week, I'll go shop at the walmart instead.
