Fark Nellie OIson. Charles Ingalls should have tied her ponytails to his carriage and dragged her until there was nothing left but a hairy skull

I always thought Nellie was a boy in drag.

In Wilder's unpublished memoir, "Pioneer Girl," there is no reference to Mary having scarlet fever the year she went blind. (She did have scarlet fever when she was much younger.) "She never says scarlet fever. She never says rash," Tarini says, pointing out the rash is a telltale sign of scarlet fever.

So the real takeaway from this ENTIRE story is that it's not in the actual memoirs and is more of an editorial embellishment? And also, how hard is it to look up data on scarlet fever? Hell, they don't even need the source material by Laura Ingalls Wilder to do that.

Mind. Blown.

Too much fapping.

..But how was Laura Ingalls supposed to tell us that?

2013-02-06 11:21:03 AM
Meh, we only have that Ingler biatches word that Nellie was a hideous person. Seriously you want to take the word of girl? Everybody knows that girls are incapable of being rational, impartial or reasonable.

It still amazes me how Laura became the hottest girl on the show.

Is that why Mary went blind, why Nellie was a coont, or both?

I know....Nellie was a coont.

But didn't she grow a really nice rack in the later years of the series?

I do like her comment on how Charles Ingalls was supposed to be a poor dirt farmer, but he had a $300 Hollywood haircut.

I think I already saw this episode of House.  This is the one where they break into the Ingall's cabin that they discover the toxic sludge in their basement that they didn't know about.

Agarista -
I don't remember Nellie from the books...She was a minor character in Plum Creek, and Ingalls stated in interviews that the character is actually created from memories of a few different classmates.

The books aren't actual history, anyway.  They're fictionalized.  Laura's brother who died in infancy is never mentioned, for example.

She was there, though clearly less prominent since the books didn't need recurring antagonists.

I'm pretty sure she was also in The Long, Long Winter. Laura reflects that Nellie now lives in the country and that Laura is the town girl now.

And as far as the blindness goes, I'm pretty sure it was because she ate the watermelon!

IIRC the Olsens suffered a reversal of fortune.

Or the year the family ran a boarding house in Iowa.

The malaria episode was very weird because it was just about the only time a black person is seen or mentioned in all the books (as far as I can remember), and he happened to be a doctor. The second time black people are mentioned is when Pa does a blackface minstrel show in De Smet.

That's the only scene from that show I like - where she's got egg all over her head, and Caroline asks "Nellie what happened?" and she says "Something wonderful.  He said I was pretty."

In the book I think only Pa eats the watermelon and is the only one not to get sick. It's been 25 years or so, so I might be remembering that wrong.

Negative, Charlie Brown, however it was the first television episode to touch the subject of attempted rape and its emotional trauma.

Little House on the Prairie also dealt with rape, and incestuous rape at that, with Albert's girlfriend in what was the most disturbing episode of the entire series.

Not incestuous; she was raped by the town's blacksmith, who dressed up like a mime for some reason.

Oh, right. I got it mixed up. It's been a looong time since I saw that one. Her father was trying to hide it and being a dick about it because he was ashamed of her not being a virgin. The fact that she was raped didn't seem to matter to him as much as his own embarrassment at having a deflowered daughter who was asking for it.

And yeah.. the mime thing. Creepy.

The thing that made that episode suck for me was that I had a huge crush on the actress.

Well, before all of that Nellie had been bullying the other girls at school and sneering at Laura and Mary as "country girls" and talking about her rich family, so it wasn't totally unprovoked. Later on she turns up in De Smet, becomes Miss Wilder's teacher's pet, and flirts with Almanzo a bit. The Nellie of the books was a composite character, though -- Laura combined three different girls into one for the purposes of fiction. But she wasn't a constant presence like she was in the TV series, she just turned up now and then to be annoying.
