I'd love to see a Wildcards HBO original series.  That would be the best thing since a Domokun first chased a kitten.

Indeed.

Wild Cards would certainly put some weird up in HBO's hat though. Probably should only do one or two seasons, it really fell apart during the second/third book.

Has NOBODY ever heard of ghost writers?

I know of one good writer who was paid to "help" write a series of books contracted out to a well known author who is not named Patterson.
In reality, the primary author plans on pretty much rubber stamping everything the ghost author is going to do.

2013-02-06 08:23:18 AM
predictions for next book:

1 a lot of freys and boltons are going to die at stannis' hands in front of winterfell. you just know he's got something wiating.

2. snow is dead and melisandre will revive him, and thus "release" him from his duty of watch captain.

3. bran will learn to control dany's dragons which will eventually come back by the end of the series, and incinerate the north.

4. the starks will somehow reconcile with the returning targaryens and keep their place in the north, Bran leading them as Head Dragon Tamer or something.

5. Boltons and Freys: i wait for their destruction with baited breath. i want them all dead.

6. future of the lannisters is harder to see. cersei's so f'd.... hard to predict anything good coming out of that story. there's no place for them in a targaryn restoration.

discuss.

It's not that hard to end.

Twist!

Zombie bum-loving a dragon!

Twist!

All the cast dies!

Twist!

Cersei gives birth to a monkey.

Twist!

Monkey also has bum-love with both dragon and zombie.

Twist!

Jon Snow not dead! He's in the corner, masturbating over the monkey/dragon/zombie

The end.

The first three are the classics of the series. #4 is the one that introduced the global plotlines by way of the World Tour. That said, my favorites of the series are Down and Dirty (#5) and Ace in the Hole (#6), because of the shift in focus to more of a political thriller.

I think a lot of people just hate the stuff with the Jumpers that happens starting in book #8. Which is kind of weird because the first chapter in the second book is involves Tantric man-on-man necrophilia. It's not like anyone ever shied away from being kinda yucky stuff.
Personally, I'd love to see the Great and Powerful Turtle on screen.

I may be the only one here who thinks he doesn't have to.  This guy explains it so well I have nothing to add.

TL;DR version:  Despite building up a reputation for breaking normal fantasy conventions, GRRM's plot is unfolding like any conventional fantasy saga.  The main characters are as bulletproof as any, and as the "ice" and "fire" parts get going it's looking less and less original.  The key difference is that a political story that would be confined to a chapter or two in most doorstop fantasy trilogies is like 90% of the books' bulk weight, and this leads readers into confusing who's a main character and who isn't.  Fact is, pretty much anyone who isn't Dany, Tyrion or Jon Snow is a bit player, and thus there isn't a victory they could win that can't be wiped out a couple hundred pages later.  The Stark children might be important later on but in the big scheme of things they've been so passive that they're really not much more than cameras on legs.

{Nerd Rage Activate}

So then: Winds of Winter™ - Due 2017 I guess?

My guess is he will die before he finishes this series. Or at the very least HBO will beat him to the finish.

And people biatch about Robert Jordan dying before his books were finished. At least he had *11* of them done in 15 years AND made sure someone was in place to finish the damn books.

Martin has taken 15 to do 5. More importantly, if he dies, so does the book series.

And don't tell me it's because they're more complicated to make then the WoT books either, since most people who don't like WoT complain it's TOO complicated (not that they can't follow along, it's just there are too many things going on for the writing to be properly focused). It's because Martin won't buckle down and finish the books and unlike Jordan, he apparently doesn't have an editor who will tell him when he needs to stop. Then again, maybe he does and he just ignores her.

I *refuse* to read the books again (read through book 4 like most folks) or buy a single one of them till he finishes the damn series. Completely. I will 100% buy the whole series when that happens, even if the ending is crappy as the series through book 4 IS great. The TV series is *awesome*. I just won't get teased with an ending he may not provide anymore. I'll let HBO tell me how it ends if I have to.

Yeah, I remember reading about that non-magical Westerosi war in history class. I believe it was the unit right before TekWar.

He has already stated that he's given the producers of the TV show an outline on how the story ends, in the event that he dies before it is completed. But he also said he doesn't want anyone finishing the books.

/not enthused enough to Google a source on that
