IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE IN THE TSUNAMI REGION:

1) Hold your phone or camera horizontal.
2) Do not shake the camera.  Place the camera on a surface if possible.
3) You cannot record everything you see.  Pick a subject and stay with it.
4) Use the zoom feature only when the scene requires it.
5) Do not speak.
6) When posting your videos to YouTube, include all footage and do not alter the sound.
7) Tsunami waves arrive in sets, and the first may not be the worst.  Have plenty of charged batteries + memory available.
8) If overtaken by a tsunami wave, do not panic.  Throw your memory cards onto the highest structure you can.

Big Ramifications: Why do some BIG EARTHQUAKES cause salamis and some don't?

There's been dozens of earthquake-induced salami warnings since the big one in Japan. Why do most turn out to be false alarms? Of the top of my head:

** Exponential scale and all that. A 7.0 earthquake is way way smaller than an 8.0 earthquake.
** The shape and gradient of the sea bed near the earthquake.
** Secret military technology. Nothing to do with earthquakes.

Why only the Christmas day salami of 2004 and the recent one in Japan.

This may be the most Fruedian post ever commited on Fark.

Igor Jakovsky: AverageAmericanGuy: Vectron: Officials warn the people of Guam not to run to one side of the island.

I heard that it's possible to tip over some islands, like Guam, if enough weight is added to one side. Apparently the island itself is like an iceberg, in that it is mostly underwater except for a small, buoyant part above the water. Enough force added in a small area could unbalance the island and tip it.

Stay safe, Guamian Farkers.

So what do you call them, guamish, guambats, guamibears?

Oh, shiat, there is just nothing between the epicenter and Tuvalu. That's supposed to be one of the first countries beneath the waves alongside the Maldives and Kiribati. Kiribati has Tuvalu, Tokelau and Baker Island to run blocking, as well as some distance, but they won't provide much help.

no,
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFICOCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

That's because warnings for that area are issued by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami warning center versus the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

So there's still a chance?
