Tsunami warning on pretty much every low-lying Pacific island that's getting swallowed up by rising sea levels as it is.

This is not going to be pretty.

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

It's times like these that I am happy to live 6700 feet above sea level.

Good luck, 8.0 is a biggie.

Why do some BIG EARTHQUAKES cause salamis and some don't?

There's been dozens of earthquake-induced salami warnings since the big one in Japan. Why do most turn out to be false alarms? Of the top of my head:

** Exponential scale and all that. A 7.0 earthquake is way way smaller than an 8.0 earthquake.
** The shape and gradient of the sea bed near the earthquake.
** Secret military technology. Nothing to do with earthquakes.

Why only the Christmas day salami of 2004 and the recent one in Japan.

At last most of the places listed in the warning don't have that much population compared to some areas that are tsunami prone.

Well, except Wake and Kwaj. They're populated by white guys that make decent money because they have to live on Kwaj or Wake.

For one, because it's a log scale. Both the Japanese and the Boxing Day quakes were pushing 9.0.

I'm going to claim stupidity, and ignorance in advance, but I have a question.

Is it at all possible that with the Arctic icecaps melting, the weight redistribution is having an affect on the plates?
I think that that even a 1/2" rise in the oceans, would mean hundreds of trillions of pounds of water has moved to a different location.

There was an 8.0 in 2007 off of the Solomon Islands that caused an 10 foot tsunami, which resulted in 2 death. The islands are pretty mountainous and there are only half a million people so it's damage will probably be diminished thankfully. .
