SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

Why do some BIG EARTHQUAKES cause salamis and some don't?

There's been dozens of earthquake-induced salami warnings since the big one in Japan. Why do most turn out to be false alarms? Of the top of my head:

** Exponential scale and all that. A 7.0 earthquake is way way smaller than an 8.0 earthquake.
** The shape and gradient of the sea bed near the earthquake.
** Secret military technology. Nothing to do with earthquakes.

Why only the Christmas day salami of 2004 and the recent one in Japan.

There was an 8.0 in 2007 off of the Solomon Islands that caused an 10 foot tsunami, which resulted in 2 death. The islands are pretty mountainous and there are only half a million people so it's damage will probably be diminished thankfully. .

From the USGS image the center is in the knee of a fault that's mostly subduction headed west bound. But since it is a knee it's all compressed towards the southwest, and that's the side I'd expect the up heave. Then the knee points at the Great Barrier Reef, which might be able to break up any tsunami headed that way.

I doubt Sandy Island is going to fare well.

It depends on a lot of factors on whether a particular quake will generate a Tsunami.

Size of quake (larger the quake, larger potential for tsunamis)
Depth from surface (the close it is to the surface, the stronger the movement as the waves don't have to travel as far)
Type of fault (is it moving up and down like that reverse fault image above will generate more tsunamis as it diplaces water in the movement compared to a side by side fault motion)
Secondary effects (this often is a landslide triggered by the earthquake that displaces a large quantity of water causing the tsunamis)

On the other hand, the ones that are there have absolutely nowhere to run and no higher ground to get to. It is pure, unmitigated brace-for-impact.

This is not going to be a 'body count' thing. The worry here is more analogous to a tornado hitting some barely-incorporated town and wiping the entire town off the map.

Oh yeah, I was just looking at that. Pressure hitting that spot from two angles, that's a lot of compression there. Any tsunami on the GBR would wreak havoc on the coral reefs. That sucks, but better than it hitting Queensland full force. New Zealand and of course the smaller island chains are more exposed though.

Kirabati is largely composed of atolls and they're narrow and steep and don't get affected much by tsunamis. Sort of like a wave doesn't do much to a piling.

Enough force added in a small area could unbalance the island and tip it.

Big Ramifications: TeamEd: Big Ramifications: Why do some BIG EARTHQUAKES cause salamis and some don't?

There's been dozens of earthquake-induced salami warnings since the big one in Japan. Why do most turn out to be false alarms? Off the top of my head:

** Exponential scale and all that. A 7.0 earthquake is way way smaller than an 8.0 earthquake.
** The shape and gradient of the sea bed near the earthquake.
** Secret military technology. Nothing to do with earthquakes.

Why only the Christmas day salami of 2004 and the recent one in Japan?

For one, because it's a log scale. Both the Japanese and the Boxing Day quakes were pushing 9.0.
~
I covered that one in my first point, sizzlechest.

Apologies for the spelling and grammer. I always run a spell check in word and re-read. Somehow I hit Add Comment when I didn't want to.

That was the point. You asked why don't big tsunamis like those two happen often. The main reason is because there's been like ten 9.0 quakes in recorded history.

Johnson: This is an island that, at its widest level is, what, 12 miles from shore to shore? And at its smallest level or smallest location, it's seven miles between one shore and the other. Is that correct?

Willard: I don't have the exact dimensions, but to your point, sir, I think Guam is a small island.

Johnson: A very small island and about 24 miles, if I recall, long. So 24 miles long, about seven miles wide at the least widest place on the island and about 12 miles wide on the widest part of the island. And I don't know how many square miles that is. Do you happen to know?

Willard: I don't have that figure with me, sir. I can certainly supply it to you if you'd like.

Johnson: Yes. My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.

Willard: We don't anticipate that. The Guam population, I think, currently about 175,000 and, again, with 8,000 Marines and their families, it's an addition of about 25,000 more into the population.

CruJones: I wrote a paper on Tuvalu in high school. We had to pick a country and write a ten page paper. I picked it as a joke, but getting ten pages out of that country was tough.

Tuvalu isn't much of a country.  I spent a couple days there; the bulk of it is just a narrow reef sticking up 6 feet out of the water.  Given a slingshot you can stand in the middle of the "country" and land a rock in the ocean on both coasts (seriously - it's only 250 feet wide in most places).  I certainly hope there's nothing heading their way; they'd be swept away.

They were .tv of course and if i'm remebering it right some scammy-acting company made a deal with them and were trying to sell .tv urls all over the internet. Costa Rica is on the west coast of the Americas. That area has been taken off of the warnings and all they have left are possible non-damaging harbor surge advisories. Granted that's from the Mexican border northwards but they should be fine as long as they stay off the beach at or before sunrise tomorrow.

Tuvalu has no industry, tourism or manufacturing to speak of; it was completely 3rd world when I was there in the 90's.  Back then their government was supported by selling stamps to collectors (they were rare because it was such a tiny country).  I assumed they made a lot more money with the .tv domain registry but wouldn't be surprised if they got hosed on that deal.  The only non-native I ran into when I was there was a peace corp guy that was teaching the natives how to grow food by processing seaweed for fertilizer.  He was also teaching basic sanitation by trying to get them to use a latrine instead of pooping on the ground wherever they pleased.  He had flyers posted all over the place:

Fark Rye For Many Whores: TommyymmoT: I'm going to claim stupidity, and ignorance in advance, but I have a question.

Is it at all possible that with the Arctic icecaps melting, the weight redistribution is having an affect on the plates?
I think that that even a 1/2" rise in the oceans, would mean hundreds of trillions of pounds of water has moved to a different location.

It has already begun: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-glacial_rebound

That led me on a great wiki adventure that ended up in mushroom species, Vikings, and learning about Linear A and Linear B languages, which are proto-Greek I guess you'd say. Linear A has never been deciphered.

Big Ramifications: Why do some BIG EARTHQUAKES cause salamis and some don't?

There's been dozens of earthquake-induced salami warnings since the big one in Japan. Why do most turn out to be false alarms? Of the top of my head:

** Exponential scale and all that. A 7.0 earthquake is way way smaller than an 8.0 earthquake.
** The shape and gradient of the sea bed near the earthquake.
** Secret military technology. Nothing to do with earthquakes.

Why only the Christmas day salami of 2004 and the recent one in Japan.

I'm pretty sure this is a serious post, but I'm giggling like mad at all the salamis.

Only 10 square miles, population 10,619.

Tuvalu consists of a densely populated, scattered group of nine coral atolls with poor soil. The country has no known mineral resources and few exports and is almost entirely dependent upon imported food and fuel. Subsistence farming and fishing are the primary economic activities. Fewer than 1,000 tourists, on average, visit Tuvalu annually.

That's pretty bleak sounding and just from looking at google for a couple of minutes some people think the ocean will swallow it whole.

They've leased their domain (.tv) for $50 million over 12 years which makes that a not insignificant portion of their GDP.

FunkOut: I know someone who says they want to move to somewhere in the South Pacific because the Yellowstone Caldera might explode. All I could do was raise my eyebrows at them.

8 foot plus tall (assuming at least 16 feet above mean sea level total) reinforced concrete pilings driven up to 40 feet down depending upon the ground. Build a house on a platform on top of them. The area below the platform needs a light and frangible enclosure to allow water and excessive winds to either pass through or break through them long before the pilings may fail (so no permanent spaces like kitchens or baths). Taa Daa! 99% of the worry is gone as long as the whole thing (pilings, platform and primary living area) is securely tied together.

Of course it would probably cost at least 3x more to get the materials and equipment out there than it would to buy the materials and get it put it all together properly though (assuming that it's an island like the one in the picture posted above of Tuvalu).

Doable but not really practical.

KarmicDisaster: crispyone: Bathia_Mapes: crispyone: Bathia_Mapes: Link with more info here

Well if Faux news is reporting it at least we know it's not true. Move along citizens.

Other sites are posting it too. It was just the first result available at the time. Currently there are reports from Huffington Post, BBC, CNN, Telegraph and numerous other sites, all in addition to the link from USGS.

So Faux news actually reported something true???  I thought they were, Faux??? I'm so confused.

You can be sure that they won't be reporting on how the GOP tried to cut the Tsunami warning centers.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20042264-503544/proposed-gop- bu dget-cuts-target-tsunami-warning-centers/

Are you really that dumb? Did you even read the article you linked?

Across the board budget cuts (including NOAA) = cutting funding to tsunami warning centers?

Yeah, no. Your MUST GENERATE OUTRAGE AT GOP bluff has been called.  How NOAA decides to use their smaller budget is up to them.  They could drop any number of programs other than tsunami warning centers if they deem the other programs to be of lower priority.

And even if, arguendo, they did specifically target tsunami warning centers funding that isn't necessarily bad.  If the tsunami warning center program had $10 billion in funding per year, then budget cuts just maaay be appropriate.  Obviously they don't have that much funding, but the point is that they might be overfunded for the priority of program that they are.  And you haven't presented jack shiat for evidence that they're underfunded other than a union boss's statement that with budget cuts to NOAA some folks will be furloughed which will result in the instant death of millions of people.

Well, that would explain something.  I was on the road coming back to my company's yard, riding with one of my company's CDL drivers back to the yard (which is in the inundation zone) when my phone rang.  It was the yard manager.  I thought he was just calling to biatch (since we were an hour overdue, by strict yard time...never mind that he had sent us on our trucking mission only an hour and a half earlier), but then he got even more surreal than usual.  I guess he was really calling us to tell us to wave off and find a spot in the mountains, then the all clear came in and he had to make up some bullshiat.

Everybody PANIC!!!
Oh, wait... Where's the wave?

A tsunami of 90 cm* is too small to count.

Crikey, what a fizzer!

* 1 cm = |======| that much.

I'm on my first vacation in a decade, on final descent into Vanuatu right when the quake hit. Pilot loses contact with the ground so we head up again and return to base. Best wishes to anyone caught down there, now I'm back at home drinking my duty free booze.

I blame the Japanese!

/Dear Mods, this is NOT hate speech.  It is a joke, one that plays upon the fact that the word Tsunami is of Japanese origin!

Yeah, I made a comment about blaming the Japanese and not finishing them off in World War II, and it got deleted as hate speech.  Kind of funny that people can crack pedofile/pedobear jokes all over the place and it is OK, yet a joke about nationality is forboten.

/Dear Mods, this is NOT hate speech.  It is an explanation of a post that was deleted for being hate speech but was really a joke playing on the origin of the word TSUNAMI, which comes from Japan.  The premise being that the Japanese, in revenge for losing World War II, are causing earthquakes in order to trigger tsunamis. Again, this is not hate speech.

Hell. Delete that shiat anyway. It's practically a dare.
