(USA Today)   Does your Down Syndrome kid refuse to wear their shoes in school? Well duct tape will take care of that. Oh and there's no law against these types of practices in 20 States, so no need to make a fuss about it   (usatoday.com) divider line 158

If her parents had bound her feet & ankles to the extent that it caused bruising and made it painful to walk, they would likely have been charged with child abuse.

Let her take off her shoes.  Let the other kids laugh at her.  She'll put them back on.

I reuse to believe this could actually happen.

Or better, the state just needs to give the parents a cash buyout and tell them to take their kids elsewhere.

Pisses me off to no end that classrooms for regular kids these days are often pushing 30-35 students because the schools can't afford to hire more teachers because so much budget goes to special needs students.  So your future tax base is rotting while kids who will probably end up under state care get gobs of money.

No, I believe the school duct taped around the shoes and up to the socks. The bruising was probably cause by her freaking out about not being able to take them off.

Would the school have been liable if she was allowed to walk around outside without shoes on and stepped on broken glass or a nail, and then possibly contracted tetanus or some other infection?

Damn right. I hate wearing shoes unless it's below fifty. Even then I might wear sandals at best, depending on the weather.

Part of the problem with Down Syndrome is the name. From now on, let's call it Up Syndrome - Upsyn, to make it short and snappy. We'll have an Upsyn fundraiser and raise millions of dollars which we can use to cure the kids affected by this disease.

Why not just make things easier and give the speds back to God?  Oh, that's right...He doesn't want retarded angels, so he sent them here.

So let her take her shoes off. Put it in her IEP. Make it one of her goals: "Sarah will keep her shoes on for an hour each day." Then at her next eval, you increase it to two hours. By the end of the year, she's wearing her shoes all day. Guess what: Kids don't die because they don't wear their shoes indoors at school.

This isn't rocket surgery, people--you're supposed to be smarter than the retards you're teaching.

2013-02-06 03:03:43 AM
I'm not Down with that. They need to better train the teachers to deal with special needs children. I can understand it may get frustrating for them, but maybe they're just in the wrong line of work. You don't do something nutty like using duct tape on a kid. If it was a liability issue they should've called the parents to come pick her little misbehaving ass up and take her home.

Nonono.

Don't send her to school.
If you DO send her to school, make her meet all the educational objectives and keep failing her until she passes.

Oh, right.

I was thinking like a special ed advocate and not like an educational administrator again. *tsk* Guess I'm the retard here.

Probably more special ed kids.  Because, y'know, retards are a gift to the community that touch all our hearts.

The Bible quite clearly teaches that these retards and quite repulsive in the eyes of God. Here is what Leviticus says about it.

21:16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
21:17 Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
21:18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,
21:19 Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,
21:20 Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;
21:21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.
21:22 He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy.
21:23 Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, and thuse desecrate my sanctuary

I'll have to tell my brother and sister-in-law that this is acceptable behvior towards their kid.

2013-02-06 03:50:58 AM
I'm surprised that 30 states have banned putting duct tape on mentally handicapped children's feet. I guess that use to be a big problem?

2013-02-06 03:52:10 AM
maybe they should put their precious little tard in a... I dunno, school for tards? Instead of normal school where people go to get an education, rather than what is little more than government babysitting under the guise of educating something that apparently cannot be educated properly.

Behaviour like that described in the article follows naturally from the mindset that can use a term as offensive as "retard".

Retard is a term that is shortened from mental retardation, which is a technical description, not an insult.  I may not be a big fan of having Saxons in my heritage, but I don't throw a hissyfit if someone describes me as Anglo-Saxon to differentiate me from someone else who is of Slavic heritage.

all in all, folks with down's syndrome are a pretty cheery lot and fairly pleasant to be around. we're not talking pica, you understand

damn stubborn about stupid things sometimes though

Yeah, just cuz their feet freeze off almost immediately and the teachers use that as an example for brighter kids who still have feet...

And n-word is a dialect form of "negro" derived ultimately from the Latin "niger", which is a technical description of skin colour and not an insult.
