Depends on the context.

"Ass" meaning "rear-end" is derived from the British "arse."

However, "ass" meaning "a stupid, obnoxious, or oafish person" is derived from "ass," i.e. the group of mammals related to the donkey.

When we say that something is asinine, we are using the latter sense.  Something is stupid or obstinate like an ass (donkey).
