Aren't ads tailored to the individual's location and google search habits? OMG racism! If you don't like the stereotype then stop contributing to it.

FTFA: "Prof Sweeney's investigation suggests that names linked with black people - as defined by a previous study into racial discrimination in the workplace - were 25% more likely to have results that prompted the searcher to click on a link to search criminal record history. She found that names like Leroy, Kareem and Keisha would yield advertisements that read "Arrested?", with a link to which could perform criminal record checks."

Weird copy paste fail...
Meh.

2013-02-05 04:35:01 AM
Simple reason, really

White and black parents name their children Jonathan, Nathan, Bruce, William, etc; but black parents do like to use exotic names, moreso African names, to name their children. White parents do not name their children Lamar, Sheniqua, etc etc. So when someone types in the name "Lamar" into a search engine, the pool is much lower to pick from. There are more black people in jail than white, so a name like Lamar would most oft be seen with the criminal record.

I hope I made sense as I am pretty damn high right now.

This really smacks of someone looking for discrimination and because they are looking for it they find it, regardless of whether it is actually there or not. I'm thinking the professor needs to look at her own motivations before reaching the conclusions she's reaching.

Seriously, computer programmers only want to do the work they have to do. Nobody is going to write code that says:

if name == "LaTonya": show_arrested_ads()

Meh, I went to reuters.com, like they did in the study, and typed "leroy" into the search box.  Got results about a basketball player named Leroy Hill being arrested for felony domestic violence.  If Google was going to do a context analysis of that page, I wouldn't be surprised to see crime related ads.

The only ad on the page was for some cloud computing service though ("the leader" in buzzword-laden vaporware, evidently).  I'm guessing/hoping the researchers did each search on a fresh machine so as to prevent Google from catering results to the person doing the searching.

there is a serious quantity of commercials that has funky music and black folks dancing all over the place. if i was a black folk i would want to know why the companies that follow this format do so. and i wouldn't be spending my coin there until they came up with a real good reason.

She noted that one possible cause may be Google's "smart" algorithms - technology which automatically adapts advertising placement based on mass-user habits.

In other words, it may be that the search engines are reflecting society's own prejudices - as the advertisng results Google serves up are often based on the most popular links previous users have clicked on.

She argued that technology should be used to counteract this effect.

"In the broader picture, technology can do more to thwart discriminatory effects and harmonise with societal norms."

... if it was attempting to suppress society's own prejudices, then it would be  modifying societal norms, not harmonizing with them, dumbass.

There are plenty of explanations other than racism.

It's nice to see an ad with people who look just like you.  Why would I not shop somewhere, where the advertisers made sure to show that they are interested in my interests too? What's funny is that the NBA and NFL both have assloads of non-white players, but it's only the NBA where you'll see black targeted ads on Sunday.  NFL doesn't do that.  Why?

Can you imagine if Super Bowl Sunday's ads were predominantly black oriented, like the NBA's are?  Would whites demand to see 'real' ads, 'normal' ads instead of special interest ads?

The issue is not that the ads exist.  It's that they won't usually be played during programs with a predominantly white audience.

Seriously this is a lot of noise.

COmpanies (including Google) aren't opicking names out of a hat or arbitrarily assigning names "black points" to decide what ads come up.

"So the ad text getting the most clicks eventually displays more frequently."
[Professor Latanya] argued that technology should be used to counteract this effect.

Let me get this straight, Latanya - you want to use technology to somehow mask, obscure or negate the effect of crowd-sourcing and weighted results? So, for example, if more people click on a news article from NYTimes.com than, say, BET.com, technology should be used to give equal weight to both articles because white people are racists and don't get their news from BET? I would really, really like to see this argued in a public forum.

Yaknow I would maybe have said that maybe the problem is close to half of all black men spending at least some time in jail during their lives and maybe that should be addressed. But I guess we could justvyell at Google till they change their ad algorithm so we can stop thinking about it. That's very much like solving a problem.

Yeah, jump on the OMFG GOOG DEH EVIL narrative all you want, but if you name your child something like this, that child is going to be unfairly discriminated against their entire lives. Years ago, Shoney's restaurant was busted for filling in the "o" on their applications with ink in order to designate black candidates in order to weed them out early. If the name on that application is "D'oShequila," it's going right to the bottom of the pile if that manager doesn't want a black chick. Wise the f*** up and give these kids a fighting chance in life.

The one time you picked it up, it had white biatches on the cover? LMAO

I haven't picked up gentlemen's magazines targeted to black men in a while, either, but that's only because many of them stopped putting black women who were proud to just be black, and started only putting biatches who claimed to be Spanish or Latina or Blasian. I get that men want to see exotic women; like the one dude said, he didn't want to see a girl he could see in the neighborhood.  That was basic to him, he wanted to see someone he'd never usually see.  And I guess he wasn't alone.

The widespread use of booty implants also was a turn off. I guess men are the same all over. White men can't be bothered with anything except tits in the face. The rest of her could be whatever, and don't let her have an ass because for some reason the existence of ass scares white men even when that's all they talk about.  But as long as she's got tits.... and they don't even have to look like real tits, some men prefer tits which don't look like anything which nature created.

Who knew black men would have the same obsessiveness, except towards ass?

/saw a troll/gay man claim that the Calvin Klein model from the other night's ass had hips which were "just as wide and ugly as a woman's"

I'm going to go ahead and say it, over the past month I've been doing taxes in the ghetto at a retail store.  When I'm not with a customer I'm walking down the aisles looking to promote what I'm doing.  There are things that everyone looks to buy, like toys, soda, batteries, shampoo, soap, clothes, laundry detergent so on and so fourth.  There are other things that are not so universal.  The hair care section for black people is very obvious.  It's not often I see a white person wearing a bunch of gold chains and sporting grills.  Only once have I seen a black guy looking at greeting cards.

So, with this in mind, if the people at google can make an ad subroutine that can figure out your gender and race, that would actually be in their best interest, as well as the interest of those who see the ads and create the ads.

If the manager doesn't want a black person in a position, they're not going to suddenly hire that black person because their name is Catelyn, Kaitlyn, Amber, MacKenzie, Jaden, Braden, Aiden, Cooper, Hunter, Cody, Clay and all the other white trash and a-foot-away-from-white-trash-wannabe-Irish-names white folks name their kids.

let people name their children how they want to name their children.

Better yet, remove names (and addresses, since Fark has already shown time and again people in HR are all to happy to practice address discrimination) from applications.  Give the HR department applications which only have numbers attached to them, not contact information.  If they want to reach someone, they press a button, but they never find out the contact information behind that button.

Wild guess, because of social pressure lots of mildly to moderately bisexual men self-identify as straight and focus their naturally wider ranging tastes onto boyish girls.
