theflatline: I am currently writing a remake of Sanford and Son.

It will still Nathan Lane as Fred Sanford and his erstwhile son Lamont, will be played by none other than Michael Cera, and instead of a dump, they are going to have an antique consignment shop, and it will be set in Orange country.

Also on the board is Good Times with a cast whiter than Eight is Enough.  I am thinking Octomom and all of her brood with John Stamos as the dad.

Sanford and Son was a remake of a British TV show called Steptoe and Son, so it wouldn't be that big a stretch. Also, you could argue that Rosanne was a white version of Good Times.

Any ideas for The Cosby Show and What's Happening?

As somebody said above "The point is, if we're remaking something, there's a 90% chance that the focus characters were white and male, not because there's anything inherent in the role which requires it, but because historically that was the western default. " With the Cosby Show, the role required the characters be black because Cosby wanted to show successful African-Americans in a stable family as a counterpoint to stereotypes of blacks as poor and from broken homes.

Shouldn't that be on the SyFy channel then?!?!?

Meh.  Wake me up when they decide to remake "Airwolf."

fickenchucker: I'm voting "no".  American Sherlock with an Asian female Watson is pretty bad, and now a black Ironside?

/Michael Clarke Duncan, Idris Elba, and many other changes I probably haven't noticed have worked, but these two are just flat out lame.

Sherlock is not American in the series. For that matter, Watson is American, not Asian (Is Sam Jackson an African? Is Bruce Willis a European?). It's much more unusual that the character is a hot woman rather than a middle-aged man than it is that she's Asian-American rather than English. But in any case, Holmes has been reimagined in so many ways by now that I don't see how another version, if it's done well, should deserve criticism just for reimagining the characters. And I think "Elementary" is done pretty well, though it isn't nearly as good as BBC's "Sherlock."

I'll watch it.  I remember very little of Ironsides other than it was more cerebral than, say, McCloud or Rockford*.  I prefer cop shows with real detective work and good characters and less emphasis on chasing the bad guys down.

*Nothing against those shows, BTW.  Rockford is still the best PI show ever.

Yeah and I watched it a few times (I have insomnia and a finite number of BluRays) and what about it besides the character names has anything to do with Sherlock Holmes?

We no longer pretend that this country is made up exclusively of straight white guys and their "little ladies"?

Just wait until they get around to remaking Rockford Files with that lame-ass nerdy guy from Big Bang Theory as Rockford.

Would this be a reboot of the reboot from three years ago with Dylan McDermott as Jim Rockford or maybe it was Dermot Mulroney. It lasted 3  episodes.

Reuses the IP while keeping it relevant to another generation. Meh. It's another show I'l be skipping, as I'm tired of retreads.

vonster: All iconic movies or TV shows of the last 50 years must be re-made in black tan.

FTFY. And, it's a reasonable response, given the shift and diversity in television audiences. It'd just be nice if they continued to move forward and make new IP, rather than reskin existing IP. So tired of pitches like "it's 'Sherlock Holmes', but instead of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, we'll get Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu - scruffy English guy with a rep for Sherlock, with an Asian chick playing Watson. The early-20's crowd will eat it up, and hell, only the film majors will remember Basil Rathbone."

Really?  Jim Rockford would have to be played by my fave 80s actor.  C Thomas Howell.

I always liked the episode where Mark Sanger, pushing the wheelchair, got tired of Ironside's shiat, at the top of one of San Francisco's hilly streets (Market?), and just let him go. Seeya farker!

fark Basil Rathbone Holmes. He had two movies before he was inexplicably fighting Nazis. And it was his Holmes that saddled us with the abominable buffoon Watson archetype that has lingered for so long.

Jeremy. Brett. Any day, every day.

But there is room for others: Cumberbatch is awesome and even Guy Ritchie's Holmes is truer to the Conan Doyle's original pugilist/actioneer spirit than Rathbone.
