chupathingie: quickdraw: I have a meeting with HR, my union rep and my dept chair on Friday. I haven't been this scared in a long time. Its not so much what Im afraid they'll do as Im afraid I may say what Im really thinking.

Tell your union rep to poke you under the table when you cross the line and lay into them. Assuming you have a leg to stand on. If not, being sincerely apologetic might keep your job.

Thanks so much. I do have a leg or two to stand on - complete with documentation.

Humans can detect lack of oxygen just fine.

Living at 2k feet but having to occasionally live and work for a week or so above 10k feet makes the first couple nights at altitude oh-so-much fun.

sleeeeep GASP.  WTF?  OK back to sleep now, almost there....GACK!.  Motherf*ck.  Dammit just relax and you'll pass out.......GASP!!!

On and on, all night.

It's like your respiratory system knows there's something wrong with the air, and wants you on full alert in case things get any worse.

/luckily it goes away after a night or two.

Flying, death, and fire.  My fear of flying is so bad, I get nauseous just thinking about flying.  If I had to go somewhere and the only way to get there was by airplane, I'd have to be drugged for the entire flight.  There's no way I could be conscious, because I'd be that passenger sitting white-knuckled and hyperventilating the whole time, freaking everyone else out.  It's completely irrational, and I understand that, but I also don't care.

Any ride at Disneyland for that matter. Except maybe the Matterhorn.

Disney isn't bad at all. It's more like Six Flags that I will not do!

I love heights, don't sit next to me on an airplane. Am going to be glued to the window most of the flight if it isn't cloudy/boring.

You can have the window seat. Anytime I look out the window and see slight movement of the plane I think we are crashing so I sit away from the window and try to ignore that I am on a plane.

I used to be terrified of human skulls.  Halloween decorations were OK, but I dreaded the idea of seeing a REAL one.  That's the only thing I've ever been really afraid of, at least the only thing that isn't 100% legit danger.

Then, when I was about 12, I had the option to see a karner.  Made myself go in and look at a whole wall of dead eyes and told myself they couldn't hurt me.

Now, I've gotten myself into a couple roles where I could end up dealing with a charred corpse (or something equally horrible) at some point.  Don't know whether my beating-the-fear incident helped or I just grew out of it, but I'm not afraid of it.

the noises that signal that someone might be coming upstairs to my apartment.

i used to be terrified of the phone ringing, but i don't do drugs anymore.

also, i'm totally offended by "Movies likeThe Shining frighten most of us, but some brain-damaged people feel no fear when they watch a scary film " i might have brained my damage, but i love "the shining" and most all Kubrick movies (he totally pussed out on 'Lolita'), but movies can't scare me. they're art. they're emotionally moving if they're well made, and they might make me feel inspired or amused or appreciative of the artists' skills, or sad or introspective, but i've never been scared of pictures on a TV.

bbfreak: None of those. Crawly/creepies. Being pushed into/locked into a dark room with spiders/etc and having them crawl on me. I better have something to smash them with. Is totally irrational, I like spiders for example (though hate hate hate cockroaches). So the idea of being in a dark room with them potentially crawling all over me, terrifying. I can look at them, watch them, have no problem but as soon as they get on me or get close enough that it becomes clear that they'll get on me if I don't do something... ick.

Here's a bedtime story for you, then:

I once spent a summer in an apartment building that was condemned and demolished a year later. They never cleaned any of the units between tenants, and few of the student tenants cleaned either. The result was ants, of course.

I cleaned a decade's worth of filth from the kitchen. (You know when the floor kept getting whiter every time you mop? There was even one solid black spot where I guess someone had spilled soda and never wiped it up in some previous era.) But all the other units were still filthy, and they kept coming through looking for something. So I laid out lines of diatimacious earth all around the kitchen and didn't see them for a while.

Then my mom comes to visit. My roomates were gone so I put her in there. Next morning I find her sleeping on the couch - she said she'd found ants in the bed. Their kitchen entrances had been thwarted, but they'd found a hole in that bedroom instead, which I plugged up.

The night after she leaves, I'm alone in the apartment again trying to go to sleep, when I start to feel this itching on my face. I scratch it and try to relax again, but then I feel another itch on my face. I decide to ignore it this time. But it doesn't go away.

I tell myself it's not crawling insects. I'm just getting the creepy crawlies thinking about my mom's experience.

Forget about it and it will go away.

Only now there's multiple crawly spots on my face.

I try to keep telling myself that it's my imagination. That reaching up and checking for bugs would only feed the sensation.

Then I distinctly feel something crawl from my hair onto my forehead.

Yep, the ants had found a way into my room up the wall to mu hair and across my face. After I got them all off me, found and sealed their newest entree, I went ahead and moved my bed out into the middle of the room.
