My troll meter is broken today, are you serious?

Since we are politicizing the hell out of this anyway, does anyone know if this guy's guns were legally purchased?

Glad to know the kid is safe. The guy was an anti-government survivalist nutcase. Dunno why he had to bring a kid who had nothing to do with the government.

If they were, it adds validity to the argument that guns should be licensed, like cars. And the license has to be renewed every few years. Part of the licensing would involve a simple psych eval to determine if the person should continue to have access to a gun.

And the license would be required to purchase ammunition.

HotWingConspiracy: mongbiohazard: Because normal people who own guns and like to have a week or two of food in the basement don't generally do anything which would be worth reporting on.

Not until they start murdering people anyway.

From the mind control rays that the evil devil machines emit, I guess.

Strangely enough, there are millions of people who own guns and manage to not murder people - ever. Same as there are millions of people who own cars and don't use them to run people over. Or hammers who manage not to beat anyone to death. Consider the state of healthcare in this country, in particular mental health care which is in even worse shape, and our utterly appalling income and wealth disparity... but yeah, everyone who owns guns is going to start murdering people. Even though they actually don't, so let's just continue to blame the symptom and forget all about how these people have mental health problems. That'll fix it. Ignoring the cause of things always fixes them.

If the guns were legally purchased by a man with mental issues and a rap sheet, it adds validity to the question: "How long has the ATF had its thumbs up its own arse and what the hell have they been doing with the money we gave them?"

When the agency in charge of the regulations has given away more guns than its found, you have to ask if we aren't at the point of getting diminishing returns from giving government more power.

Yes, he murdered the bus driver in front of the children on the bus, including the child he then took hostage.

There's no way in Hell the kid killed him. Unless he's even dumber and crazier than we thought. Or he decided to committ suicide by having the kid pull the trigger.  In that case, he's even more evil than we thought.

Am I the only person that thinks the news coverage of this story has been absolutely pathetic? Usually we get mad at them for getting the story wrong, or focusing on irrelevant details.  This time, it was as if they just decided, "screw it, we're sitting this one out."

When the NRA spends as much money as it does interfering with the ATF's effectiveness with arbitrary political roadblocks at every turn, you have to wonder about the honesty of the NRA's "If only the government was competent enough to enforce existing law" talking points.

I don't support a ban on "assault weapons," or restrictions on magazine size. But I won't join the NRA either.

You know, assuming Obama chose that gun... I gotta say, he's got good taste. That piece is understated in its elegance. A lot of guys with the double-barreled guns like to go all out with tons of shiny lacquer on the finish, tons of ornate engraving on the receiver, and gold-plated triggers... ol' Barry just kept it simple and functional, yet beautiful.

That's all I have to say on it.

Mr. Coffee Nerves: Look, I'm a gun owner, but I'll be the first one to tell you that if you hear of me beating a dog to death with a lead pipe (assuming said dog isn't gnawing on me or my family at the time) and using my guns to randomly shoot at neighbors then take my farking guns away, because I've clearly crossed the double yellow.

How in the blue fark did this guy NOT set off every alarm bell on the batshiat-o-meter after that? Even adjusting for "Rural Alabama"

But if we take guns away from virulently insane people, or attempt to institute any registration or licensing that might enable that, we will be stepping onto that slippery slope that can ONLY end with black helicopters full of jackbooted thugs descending in the dead of night to confiscate the guns of Real Americans, and drag them off to re-education camps in Death Valley.

Locked in a bunker with a small child he could easily kill or gravely injure with his bare hands? As long as he did under the existing circumstances. Do you think the cops held off because they were afraid he'd shoot them?

At my age and physical condition, I would prefer expensive whores and cheap liquor.

No seriously, they should have just legislated the kid free! If they toss enough laws at the loony he would have realized the error in his ways and gave up! It is what's going to protect us after this crazy "gun culture" we got finally goes the way of the dodo right? Laws are like bulletproof vests, the more you have the more bullet proof you are!

Seriously, youshould fark off. Jumping on the very coattails of a situation like this reveals some pretty sociopathic tendencies in you, and that applies whether you are serious or trolling. Either one. You do not have an out, no matter the argument, strawman or appeal to "commen sense/logic". You've burned this login. If there is any decency out there at all that lives behind the snark, ignore this troll/sociopath.

I Like Shiny Things: I asked my better half yesterday why this story wasn't all over the news 24/7 since day 1.

She said it wasn't about the kid - its about the villian. "It'll be plastered all over the news when the media can report about the bad guy."

It really wasn't a big news story when this innocent child was held hostage for 6 days. Now its suddenly much more important. Hmmmm.

/this all could have been avoided if we would just outlaw bunkers

Funny. Not exactly exclusive coverage, bu up her in Nova Scotia there was an update every news cycle...
