/Preppers needs to go off the air.  It glorifies freepers and conspiratards.

When shiat hits the fan - like, say, Katrina, or Sandy, or the big New York blackout - nobody call them preppers.

Rational people call them geniuses.  And then criminals call them "people who aren't giving me their food so we beat them as a mob and took their shiat".

Glad to hear the kid made it out safe. Crazy old coot was rightfully put down. If someone takes a kid hostage, they deserve to be put down. Beyond that, didn't he shoot the bus driver?

Bit'O'Gristle: Gee, if only the responding swat team had weapons, they could have killed the suspect and saved the boy. Another reason why all guns should be outlawed. The police would do much better with no weapons.

/Yes, yes, i know, but everyone else is jumping on the derp wagon, why not hop on.

Well, one good reason is that it has no brakes, and is rolling down a hill toward the sewage treatment pond.
You might not want to be on that wagon.

Look, I'm a gun owner, but I'll be the first one to tell you that if you hear of me beating a dog to death with a lead pipe (assuming said dog isn't gnawing on me or my family at the time) and using my guns to randomly shoot at neighbors then take my farking guns away, because I've clearly crossed the double yellow.

How in the blue fark did this guy NOT set off every alarm bell on the batshiat-o-meter after that? Even adjusting for "Rural Alabama"

That's a pretty intense adjustment. I've been to rural Alabama... strange place. Some of the people are alright... a lot... are not.

we need to outlaw things I don't like.

that way, things I don't like will  never bother anyone.

and if that is  unconstitutional, they need to change the constitution because everybody panic! news and stuff!

I never trust explanations (i.e., rumors, guesses, P.R. spin) that come out right after an event. However, it would be interesting to find out what really happened.

If they didn't hear a shot and were just acting preemptively, that seems like hell of a risk that they wouldn't just cause the kid's death instead of preventing it. It was a buried bunker with a trapdoor the only way in; how could they count on getting in fast enough? Maybe they hoped surprise was enough. Fear and surprise. Fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. And nice red uniforms.

Wait, I'll come in again.

Nope. Appalachia ends in northeast Alabama. This is in the southeast corner of AL. The term you're looking for is redneck.

Considering this happened all of 8 miles from where I grew up in the city of Dothan, I have a hard time calling this area rural.  It's not like it's completely cutoff from civilization.  It's part of a metropolitan area of 100,000 people.

He killed the bus driver while trying to kidnap a kid. If he somehow made it out of this alive he was headed straight to death row.

The loud boom was probably them blowing the hinges off the door, or blowing their way in, in some other way. I'm sure they were in within seconds, probably before the guy even had a chance to comprehend what was happening.

2013-02-04 07:03:03 PM
Kid has aspergers already, so he's pretty farked up to begin with. Aspergers kids don't get the same intense emotions as normal kids so the trauma may be less pronounced than most of us would expect.

Just my $.02

2013-02-04 07:04:45 PM
If he didn't have a good or any view of the outside from the bunker, would've let the police work out just how the bunker is built and where the weak spots are. If they blew the hinges on the door that means someone could get up to it and set up some explosives, which would mean he had no way to see the outside world. But there are ways to see inside, unless he built it out of lead a foot thick. Which he obviously didn't.

Even the Alabamans? Alabamians? Alabamites? Abbalamans? hicks that live in the right part of the state would never know what Appalachian American meant. They'd think you were talking about uppity Tenneseeans? Teenyseeums? Tenness-C-uns? yankees.

Good thing the kid is okay. I would've hated to see what the end game is in Obama's gun-free paradise where noone has guns.

2013-02-04 07:09:11 PM
Taking him alive should have been a priority.  Not a higher priority than the safety of the child, but still a priority.

Less traumatic for the child, for everyone, and it would have allowed us all to learn a little bit more about what the heck happened.  More knowledge is never a bad thing.  Nevermind that holding someone hostage isn't a capital offense, so the police have some sort of duty to try to not make it one.

I think everyone would have been best served by having him go to trial, learning more about how things got to this point, and not having some kid experience a guy getting killed in the same room as him.

2013-02-04 07:09:14 PM
Sorry, I meant nothing of value was lost by this asshole shooting himself.

Obviously, the bus driver he killed previously is a loss. And yeah, this hasn't gotten nearly as much attention in the press as I would have thought, given the circumstances.

2013-02-04 07:11:08 PM
Note: Yes, I know he killed the bus driver, but once again that sort of thing has to go to trial before judgement can be passed, but the hostage thing was what they were actively dealing with, i.e. my mention of holding a hostage not being a capital offense.

What would have happened if the hostage taker didn't have a gun?

I'm told he would have used a knife or a car.

I'm guessing the knife, it's pretty hard to get a car down a PVC tube to your bunker.

Clearly this was a staged event by Fuehrer Obama to scare us all into throwing our guns into a UN-built quarry full of salt water and leftover freedom. Oh, and HeWhoHasNoName, either you've not seen Doomsday Preppers or you weren't paying attention. Having an emergency kit to see you through the first few days of a crisis is admittedly common sense. Building a geothermal-powered mega-fortress with a closed ventilation system, pungee stick traps, gun ports and an electrified motion-sensitive perimeter fence is hardly "rational". I'll bet 50 cents you have a "Don't Tread On Me" flag doubling as a curtain in at least one bedroom window.

Stay away from the peeling paint - lead poisoning will greatly affect your mental skills.

You may want to see a doctor.  Tell them about your fixation with peeling paint.

Felgraf: I don't think having bus drivers, who are frequently around grabby young children who do not, at that age, possess a very strong grasp on the concept of 'permanent consequences to an action', be armed would be a good *OR* responsible idea. For the same reason one doesn't leave a gun on a coffee table when toddlers are about.

An elementary school bus driver armed with a gun is likely to end up shooting the brats, themselves, or most likely both.
