Going by the briefing, he was shot by the police. Apparently the situation started deteriorating over the past 24 hours to the point they thought the little boy was in increasing danger.

And the said he was seen "with a gun", that's about all I got out of it as well.  The key here is that it seems that police initiated the action.  Whether police shot him, or he shot himself once confronted by them is one of the finer details that will come out in time, but either way they managed to get the kid out safe, that's all anybody cares about.

Magnanimous_J: That poor kid is going to have a heaping dose of Stockholm Syndrome to work through. That is a hell of a thing to lay on a little kid with Aspergers and ADHD.

It's kinda funny how people who spend so much time preparing for a violent last stand with the government seem so unorganized when it actually goes down. (hmm funny, not ha ha funny)

It's almost as if mentally ill people have mental illnesses. Because normal people who own guns and like to have a week or two of food in the basement don't generally do anything which would be worth reporting on.

I didn't if they shot him or he killed himself, but either way it was a successful forced entry rescue.  He could have done himself once he saw the game was up.  It doesn't particularly matter.  The murdering, kidnapping crazy guy is dead, the child hostage has been safely rescued, so damned good job by law enforcement.

atomicmask: So the talking and promises and vague threats of gun free zones didn't rescue the kid, men armed with guns rescued the kid?

They sent in a well-regulated militia with weapons training but no field experiance?

Cool.

I would have thought they'd have sent in cops or a specially trained tactical unit.

I think he did it because he was a complete nut-burgger.  A looney toon.  A slow-coach.  A mad hatter.

Felgraf:

Nah, that one's pretty easy: Given the reports about him, it was because he was *34^$#ing crazy.

/And he was about to go to court for shooting at neighbors, where they;d probably have "CUM FUR HIS GYUUUUUNNS!"

No doubt he was crazy, but that's not enough of an answer for my purposes.  Lots of people are crazy and don't kidnap aspies and lock themselves in underground bunkers.  What particular flavor of crazy in what particular combination of events set this guy off?  If we can figure that out, we might be able to prevent it from happening again.

You might be on to something with the "they's a-comin' to taek mah gunz!" thing.

He listened to a lot of conservative talk radio and hated Obama and his neighbors.

She said it wasn't about the kid - its about the villian. "It'll be plastered all over the news when the media can report about the bad guy."

It really wasn't a big news story when this innocent child was held hostage for 6 days. Now its suddenly much more important. Hmmmm.

/this all could have been avoided if we would just outlaw bunkers

That was my first thought.  Open PVC tube to the inside of the bunker, perfect.  Dosage that would put the man out and not kill the kid, not so much.

I am glad it's over and that the child can get the help he will need.  The kidnapper got his solution for his mental illness, too.  Cleaned it right out.

It takes a pretty twisted mind (obviously) to be so concerned about tyranny and personal rights while simultaneously being able to justify ending a man's life and literally taking away all freedom from a 5 year old boy and possibly ruining his entire life. This bastard should have just shot himself a week ago and saved everyone a lot of grief.

LarryDan43:

Millions of people fit that description and yet never go on to kill or kidnap anyone.  Obviously, those may be contributing factors in the specific form that Dykes' madness took but they were not, themselves, causes of his madness.  If listening to Rush Limbaugh and hating Obama made people go on crime sprees, this country would be in serious chaos right now.  Getting loud-mouthed, right wing bloviators off the radio probably wouldn't have prevented this.

IDK, I just wish the head shrinkers had a chance to see what the hell was wrong with his noodle before he got snuffed.  If it had been possible to take him alive, study him, find out what makes him tick, and maybe then kill him, later, that would have been better.

I felt the same way about bin Laden.  I won't lose a second's sleep over either of those deaths, but it would have been nice to try to pick their brains first, just so that we could know what the causal factors are.

NightOwl2255: Amos Quito: But the important question is, Did he have any Assault WeaponsTM?

He had at least one. From what I've been hearing it was a combination of the deteriorating hostage situation over the past 24 hours, the increasing concern that the child was in imminent danger and seeing the suspect with a firearm in his hands that caused the FBI to move in.

There wasn't much to report for most of the past week.  First couple days saw the nutjob's backstory.  What then - violate the boy's privacy?  Cops, of course, had little to say about what they were doing; the guy had radio and TV in his bunker, for one reason.

Still, I found daily "updates" ever day of the week.

2013-02-04 06:23:54 PM
Gee, if only the responding swat team had weapons, they could have killed the suspect and saved the boy. Another reason why all guns should be outlawed. The police would do much better with no weapons.

/Yes, yes, i know, but everyone else is jumping on the derp wagon, why not hop on.
