It's good that the kid is OK.

It's too bad we'll probably never know why the kidnapper did it.

2013-02-04 05:19:55 PM

Smeggy Smurf: Bathia_Mapes: ordinarysteve: That kid is going to need a lot of consoling in the years to come.

Yep. Not only was he kidnapped, but he saw his kidnapper murder the bus driver. Lots and lots of counseling in this poor kid's future.

As a father I'd rather my kid be traumatized instead of dead.  You can do something about the trauma.  Dead, not so much.

Very true.

According to the video feed in the article, there will be a news conference soon.

So the talking and promises and vague threats of gun free zones didn't rescue the kid, men armed with guns rescued the kid?

I think he did it because he was a complete nut-burgger.  A looney toon.  A slow-coach.  A mad hatter.

FTA: Authorities said 65-year-old Jim Dykes killed 66-year-old Charles Albert Poland Jr. before escaping with the kindergartener, who has Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Wouldn't this have driven the man mad? The kid couldn't sit still and was clumsy about it. Maybe the kid is a hero.

The guy requested and got medication for the kid within hours of taking him hostage.  Most reports state that the kid seemed relatively calm for what he was going through.  He did get toys delivered to him yesterday.

/heard that they expected him to "celebrate" his 6th birthday as a hostage
//so glad that's not the case

Nah, that one's pretty easy: Given the reports about him, it was because he was *34^$#ing crazy.

/And he was about to go to court for shooting at neighbors, where they;d probably have "CUM FUR HIS GYUUUUUNNS!"

Magnanimous_J: That poor kid is going to have a heaping dose of Stockholm Syndrome to work through. That is a hell of a thing to lay on a little kid with Aspergers and ADHD.

It's kinda funny how people who spend so much time preparing for a violent last stand with the government seem so unorganized when it actually goes down. (hmm funny, not ha ha funny)

No, it's kinda haha funny too.

If it wasn't for the school bus driver (and you know, the actual kidnapping), I'd call this guy a hero.   Now, wait, put down that bucket of tar for a moment and let me explain.

So many times we see these scenarios play out, where some guy goes nuts, and the story ends with "Murder Suicide".  In this case, he put the first bullet in the most ideal place possible.  So Mr. gone-nuts-kidnapper-in-a-bunker... Thank you for taking responsibility and not taking it further than it needed to go.

(I really feel bad for this kid.  No one should be put in a situation like that.  I hope his parents are doing ok as well.  I couldn't imagine the trauma they must be feeling).

/Still amazed that this turned out as 'well' as it did.

Radio guy here in Dothan, just outside of Midland City, A huge sigh of relief here as the details continue to trickle in, as I am not sure if they used flash bangs or if the hatch was booby trapped.....Dykes IS dead, and Ethan has been taken to a local hospital.  Apparently Dykes wanted to talk to a news commentator.  He did allow the authorities give Ethan his medicine and toys to keep him occupied.  Ethan's 6th birthday is apparently Wednesday

No seriously, they should have just legislated the kid free! If they toss enough laws at the loony he would have realized the error in his ways and gave up! It is what's going to protect us after this crazy "gun culture" we got finally goes the way of the dodo right? Laws are like bulletproof vests, the more you have the more bullet proof you are!

Well, he was kidnapped from a schoolbus. I don't think having bus drivers, who are frequently around grabby young children who do not, at that age, possess a very strong grasp on the concept of 'permanent consequences to an action', be armed would be a good *OR* responsible idea. For the same reason one doesn't leave a gun on a coffee table when toddlers are about.

But, hey, that's just me.

No doubt he was crazy, but that's not enough of an answer for my purposes.  Lots of people are crazy and don't kidnap aspies and lock themselves in underground bunkers.  What particular flavor of crazy in what particular combination of events set this guy off?  If we can figure that out, we might be able to prevent it from happening again.

You might be on to something with the "they's a-comin' to taek mah gunz!" thing.
