"I was shocked, impressed. I couldn't believe it. Who would do this? Especially to a church?"

Maybe the thieves work for the IRS and found a way to get a tiny return on the tax loophole that churches tend to exploit.

I've never gotten the "How can people do this to a church?" line.  If I'm enough of a scumbag to steal copper line out of a building, I probably don't have a particular respect for churches.

Well, crooks from way back in the day (especially when the gangs of the 20s and 30s were loaded with Irish and Italian Catholics) were known for paying a lot of respect to churches and religious people/institutions, especially priests and nuns.  Nowadays you're probably right---dirtbag meth-heads don't care how they're getting the money for their next fix.

Especially since churches have rarely done anything to earn respect.

FTA: "We pray. The Lord is in control. We pray for the people who did it. The Lord have mercy on them"

Ah yes, the old 'Lord is in control' bit... He was so in control he allowed the thieves to get away with a break-in and theft all so that he might be glorified. The Lord can do no wrong - that's why he is the Lord, and in control.

/ If only there were some leads in this case (copper preferably).

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Cu IN HELL

The first thing I thought of when I read that, perhaps Beavis and Butt-head's greatest moment.

That was their greatest moment?

Ohm my god, the nerve of these thieves!

Hardly surprising. I have seen people who went on vacation, and when they came home, all the aluminum siding had been ripped off their house. Every bit. Too bad the pastor didn't live there and was armed for jesus, he could have stopped them.

If a church can get a person to be a nice human being, then they can't be all bad. And this church really shouldn't be lumped in with bad churches because no one knows what it's like.

It's lead from church rooves in the UK.

Given the lightning and general blow off/ slip off smiting opportunities not taken - I can only assume the Lord approves of such bootstrappiness.

Anyone who truly followed Christs teachings would have no respect for the church, but those Christians are rarer than a Yeti.

It very well could have been, for all I know.

Their line about playing at the state fair reminds me that one of the more recent concerts I went to was to see Rush at the Minnesota State Fair... also playing that year was Kiss, Weird Al and Boyz II Men

And considering what the Catholic Chruch was hiding for decades I'd say copper stealing is the least offensive crime ever commited in one of those buidlings.

Still don't get all the "church hate".

pretty decent offensive joke :D

as for the church hate.. it's because the church consistently makes itself the enemy of freedom, progress and healthy adult psychology. it pushes disgustingly harmful versions of sexual morality and is generally a bunch of farking assholes.

what is so hard to figure out about that?

Ok, I'll be entirely serious for a moment.

There's really no reason to lump people who profess Christianity in with the likes of, say, Pat Robertson. They're not all like that. There are Christian-themed LGBT churches, for example.

To paint all Christians with a broad brush is no different than saying that the Ku Klux Klan represents all white people, or that asswipe "Reverend" Sharpton represents all blacks. Or that pedophiles represent the Catholic church. Speaking of which, if people are still upset about the Spanish Inquisition, they need to get over it. It happened a long time ago, and nobody expected it.

Quite true - but I think what a lot of people were reacting to was the sentiment that a church should somehow have some special exemption from being stolen from, as opposed to, say, a school, or a restaurant. Are churches somehow morally superior to other structures? Is it somehow more evil to steal from one? That implication conveys a certain moral smugness that people generally don't react well to. I'm not bashing somebody by informing them that I think them no better than me.

I was at a 100 year old church on Sunday when someone tried to take some lead from the downpipes. You'd have thought they'd have picked a less obvious day to try it.

the majority of Christians are either with those people, or are silent enablers. I apologize to any Christians who actively seek to promote religion freedom, combat sex negative attitudes, etc for lumping them in with the others. However, the simple fact stands that the majority of states have religion-backed banning of marriage equality as just one example of religion running over the rights of others. It isn't just Christianity i take issue with, however it is the largest one in the states so the biggest opponent of freedom. Even most of the 'reasonable' christians propagate the harmful sex negative attitudes that cause so much suffering and conflict amongst people.

No, I will not excuse a people who, as a whole, I consider dangerously misguided - some more than others obviously.

However considering 65% of the country would vote against an otherwise perfectly qualified candidate just for being atheist.. i'm going to have a hard time accepting any claims that "They're not all like that" from anyone. I have farking eyes.

3 bucks a pound...don't know how long it was but just say 50 feet and 1 inch copper. That would be around 200 lbs=$600.00 scrap value. Cost of replacement around $5,00.00. Ripped off church goers over the last 5 years....$1,600,000.00.
They can farking afford it.

All right, don't practice your alliteration on me.

Whoops, got to go. I need to chase off the Hindus harmonizing in the hall, Shintoists shattering sheet glass in the s___house, and that.

You're not familiar with Claude Cooper's clean copper clapper caper in Cleveland?
