FTFA:

It's harmless enough: a little girl wants her dad to play with her, and the play involves her princess game. What's wrong with a dad getting into some dress up play with his daughter? Everything, apparently. Not only is the little girl threatening to take daddy away from his game-watching buddies (a threat only diffused by her Doritos bribe, heaven forbid her dad prioritizes spending time with her), but her innocent game becomes the butt of the joke. Daddy and his friends decide to eat her Doritos and play dress up with her. Which would be great! Except that the punch line is that men have put on dresses and make up. A joke that relies on caricatures of gender roles is as old as time. It's also offensive to anyone who doesn't conform to these strict roles. Also bonus nagging wife carrying groceries thrown in at the end because women are the worst

Wow....I bet the author was a blast at parties.

/My favorite commercial was the red M&M singing "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)".

As the CK ad was for men's underwear, I assumed it was aimed at gay men.

I thought they were more lame (except the one with Kat Dennings) than offensive, especially considering what those people must get paid to come up with them.

That was my favorite UNTIL I saw the Taco Bell one with the old people sneaking out of the retirement home and tearing up the town.

/And going by the author's previous articles, I don't even think she gets invited to parties

I wonder how she feels about practically every family sitcom on television.

Kudos for finding a way to objectify men and assume that women are just as shallow as the other sex!

Closing an article on misogyny with misandry? Brilliant!

I like how she says they're just assuming that women can be as shallow as men.

Find me a commercial where genders matter that isn't sexist.

2013-02-04 03:38:36 PM
I want to play this game!

Best Buy - Amy Poehler wanders around Best Buy asking stereotypical blonde questions about gadgets.

Tide - A wife ruins her husband's dreams by doing his laundry.

Coca-Cola - The only females represented are showgirls.

2013-02-04 03:39:27 PM
I'll try it without the sexist angle:
1) Driving an Audi is like getting your ass kicked and then pretending you like it.  (you seen that price tag?)
2) Well, it's a godaddy commercial.  This one was surprisingly more on-topic than any previous one.
3) Crazy chicks are hotter than your wife.  Just like sports cars look better than your modestly priced Toyota family sedan.  But you only want to test drive them.  Or rent them when you go to Vegas.
4) Doritos will teach your daughter that it's ok to break promises you made to your friends.  Also, your wife is pissed about all the cheese powder you're getting on her maternity princess outfits.
5) I don't know what Broke Girls is about, but evidently they have jobs that broke girls often apply for (waitressing, stripping, cake decorating).  Seems reasonable, but throw in illegal immigrant housekeeper to keep it fair and balanced.
6) Calvin Klein sells underwear that probably doesn't fit you.

Yeah, I don't know why people think those are anything but what they are... ads for people who can actually look sexy in a pair of sexy underwear.

It's not like Calvin Klein and Victoria's Secret are in some elaborate conspiracy with Gold's Gym to get you to go work out then buy their products.  A business plan that complicated is never going to work (especially if step 2 involves fat folks going to the gym).  They'd be better off just making and advertising underwear for fat people.

/ I always wished underwear packages had a realistic picture of somebody wearing the particular style/size combination in the package though.  Sure, you can show Arnold Schwarzenegger on the size 34 tighty whities, but on the 48s?  No, that should be some fat plumber sitting in a lay-z-boy recliner with a bud light in his hand.  That or the thin muscular dude must be like 18 feet tall.

2013-02-04 03:52:06 PM
Wow!  As a female that watched all of those commercials, I had no idea how outraged i should have been. Well, except for the Calvin Klein one.  i definately AM that shallow.

Bzzt.  The commercial was going in a pro-gender-roles direction but it was diffused when all the other men dressed it up as well.  The punchline wasn't men in dresses, it was the bearded guy ruining the wife's wedding dress.  You can only find men in dresses offensive if you find drag queens offensive, and if that's the case, I don't want to know you.

I actually thought it was weird too. As he was walking up to the queen I turned to my girlfriend and said "So Audi gets you laid now huh." After the punch, she said "Nope, Audi will get you knocked the fark out!"

Apparently she missed all of the beer commercials with scantily clad women. (Not just last night, but forever)

Don't blame CBS for what is a very common career path.

She didn't suspect that there might be some sexism when she tuned in to a game that is about men brutalizing each other in a quest for dominance? Hmm, I think she should have gone in with realistic expectations.

/There should be a fem bowl, where women suit up and play the same damn game. right girls? Who wouldn't want to see that. And I ain't talking about no lingerie league two hand touch bullshiat.

The M&M commercial was a far better representation of sexual viennese than the Audi or any other ad. Just because they're in a relationship, he's male, and he's food does NOT give her the right to ignore his pleas to decist. She even involves her friends in gang raping someone who is presented as her boyfriend.

And yet, I hear no outrage over this obvious example of female-on-male sexual violence. Where is the army of bloggers decrying Mars for their antiquated attitudes. Why are we not condemning all those who enjoy forcibly masticating their significant snack items!

/Or we could acknowledge that getting a solid story across in 30 seconds is hard, and both Audi and Mars did good jobs creating memorable spots that weren't really offensive.
//And why are we all just ASSUMING that the boyfriend did the punching. After recovering from her obvious shock and daze the girl might have clocked our courageous Audi driver.

She looked pretty happy after he left with the punch. Unless she got some twisted euphoria from punching the guy.
