Does this mean we'll see full contact biathlon this time?  Will Russia challenge Finland for the gold in the team event?

Criminal interest in the city, long a favourite weekend destination of the president, Vladimir Putin, has grown exponentially since it won the right to host the Games, according to security sources. A senior Russian official said on Sunday that Russia would spend more than £32.3bn on the Winter Olympics, making it the most expensive in history.

But remember kids, Pootey-Poot had NOTHING to do with it.  No sir, he's for honest dictatorship.

Does it also strike anyone else as odd that they are holding the WINTER Olympics in a beach resort town noted for its "subtropical" climate?

I hope the Russian mafia can put better prostitutes on the street than Canada did in Vancouver in 2010.  Seems like Canada only had home grown girls ("Oh, yer gonna blow a big load, eh?  Right in my Tim Horton shooter, eh?") and fresh off the boat Celestials (CAT INTERCOURSE NOISES).  I didn't rubber up for the Canucks, but the Orientals just smelled like Hep C.  I guess that's what happens when you don't have a strong crime family in charge.

Are Eastern European girls typically pretty healthy?  That movie Taken has really turned me off to them.  If she even remotely speaks English, I'll feel like I'm farking a Have You Seen Me? milk carton.  And no way am I standing in line with a bunch of filthy stinking construction workers all to make love to a passed out chick in a bed-sheet-room-fort that a four year old could've constructed.

I'm hopeful that the Russians can get something decent worked out.  That would save the Winter Olympics for a lot of fans of winter sports like me.

Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine, and Sochi will join the list of such esteemed Olympic host cities as Munich and Sarajevo.

i am so hoping they botch this big time.

also, this confused me:

Russians have been flocking to Sochi's beaches since the days of Stalin, who favoured the city's atypically Russian subtropical climate and peppered it with neoclassical mansions and palm-tree-lined boulevards

they are having the winter olympics in a city with a climate that support palm trees?

For those wondering how a city like Sochi could get the winter games, you can't think about it like the summer games. Outside of the Alps, there are few areas on the planet that have both the necessary alpine terrain and the infrastructure to support the winter games. Besides the alpine areas, you need a sizable airport, ice hockey/etc venues, hotels, etc. Most resorts will not have all of those available nearby.

Denver has been mentioned as a possible site of upcoming games. (hell no, imo). We have the infrastructure in town, but the ski areas would be 2-4 hours away. It is much more difficult logistically to put together a winter games, so the host cities are not always where you would expect them to be.
