I'm usually of the opinion that teenagers aren't real people, but this is still a bit much.

And when they wonder why some of the businesses that the teens do frequent (and spend their cash) go under, and the loss of those businesses drags them under as well, they'll blame anyone but themselves.

Unfortunately, it does not. Our local transit district has been doing this for the past few years at the main downtown station with no discernible effects. They play a lot of opera too, but the youths just hang around the area anyway.

IMHO, part of the reason it's not working is a lot of the young people who congregate at the transit station have earbud or headphones in place, listening to their own music, which, of course, blocks out the opera.

Or maybe they like Carmen or some of the other operas played. I dunno. :/

Eh fark off most of the little shiats I see wandering around acting like little useless morons are from middle class subdivision homes.

When was the last time you walked around downtime Indy at night, in the Summer, after the Circle Center mall just closed?

2013-02-04 02:33:04 PM
I'd rather they keep a tighter control on the geriatric population. They are way more annoying when they hang around in malls than kids hanging around in a mall. They take up more space with their rascals/walking implements, are rude (and you are expected to be polite because they are old), inspect and comment on the contents if ahopping carts etc. I prefer 6 teens in a corner with headphones to 6 old people with too much time on their hands. At least the teens will keep to themselves 9 out of 10 times.

I don't know about Indy but in my downtown it's mostly white teens from the suburbs looking for some skateboarding cred. For some reason doing tricks on interstate overpasses is more appealing that the skate parks in the 'burbs. Probably has something to do with mom's minivan but I can't say for sure.

What I do know is most teenagers are pretty cool one on one and much smarter than they're given credit for. In groups they can be significantly less so.

It's a high-pitched frequency, but it gives me a farking headache. The system is based on the premise that you lose the higher ranges of hearing as you age. I'm only 27 and it drives me nuts. It's right in the pain-range.

Sometimes I have students who use that tone as their ringtone in order to sneak it through class. Blows their minds when I hear it.

Where I grew up a local strip mall tried to do that to repel teenagers frequenting the nearby video arcade. It turned out, the kids kinda dug it. They finally thinned out when they replaced classical with easy-listening and smooth jazz.

TFHL: Indianapolis merchants solution to teen ne'er do wells downtown? Mandate ID bracelets and registration for all minors. Move along, underage citizen

At first I was all like, HELLL NAW

FTFA: When downtown merchants opt into the IndyBands organization, they would prohibit minors admittance to their establishments without adult supervision after 7:00 p.m. Adult supervision would constitute one of two states: actual parental presence or wearing a wristband,

Then I was like, you want to go in the store, put the braclet on.

So, here's the thing: private property does not mean it's a private space. If it were, you would be trespassing every time you walked into a store. I forget the terminology, but there's a specific classification for things like malls, shops, hotel lobbies, etc. where they're not strictly public, but are still subject to rules regarding barring access to people based on certain criteria. Maybe some FarkLawyer can explain it to you.

I certainly can ban a class of people from my public accommodation.  If I don't want lefties or redheads, that's too bad.

Unaccompanied minors are not a protected class.  This is not age discrimination.  Minors are not banned or refused service; they are welcome with adult supervision.

Malls have been banishing unaccompanied minors for many years; my son was first affected about 10 years ago (I registered my displeasure with the mall's manager and the local newspaper).  If there was any basis for a lawsuit, I'm sure we would have heard of one by now.

We had the same thing here in St. Louis at two different malls. When there was talk of a curfew all the teenagers said the stores would lose gazillions because they'd lose all those thousands of sales. Long story short - curfews went into effect, the sales numbers went up and stayed up. One of the malls is currently expanding their curfew.

Also, no one said carry the receipts around. Unless you're a total idiot, you have some sort of organizational system at home.

BarkingUnicorn: ProfessorOhki: Bathia_Mapes: wiseolddude: Broadcast classical music in the area, that will keep them away.

I dunno. :/

"I chased him out of my shop and as he was leaving he glared at me a-and... he... he said, 'you'd best keep your hand at the level of your eye, old man.' What is wrong with kids today?!"

OK, non snark:  He was talking about Operas.  In the Phantom of the Opera, the Phantom was exceptionally skilled at killing people by strangling them.  The advice given was to 'keep the hand at the level of your eye'.  The idea being if you kept your hand by your face, so if someone snuck up behind you to garrote you, your hand would be between the garrote and your neck, saving your life.
