UnspokenVoice: mooseyfate: cgraves67: Fark, every other day: "count to potato, lulz"

Fark, today: white knighting kid with Down Syndrome

I guess the take away is that Fark hates DJs more than it likes making fun of Downs kids.

There's only 11ish posts in this thread. So I guess the real take-away should be that only a minority of Fark DOESN'T think making fun of people with Down's syndrome is funny. That really shouldn't come as a surprise. Internet farkwad theory and all that.

But at least you found a way to be superior to the rest.

/now the circle is complete

How am I "feeling superior to the rest"? By pointing out that a relatively small number of Farkers aren't okay with making fun of people with Down's syndrome? Yeah, I'm really up here on my high horse, looking down my nose at you filthy little miscreants.

Maybe I'm old school, but I like calling things gay and retarded when those words aren't connected to things that actually are literally gay or retarded. I'm willing to fight for my right to continue on that one and oh my God I sound like those assholes in the gun threads.

The "deep thoughts with Skinnyhead" meme not withstanding, making fun of people with developmental disabilities is not cool. Meanwhile, making fun of morning zoo Douche Jockeys is not much of a challenge. Neither of those explains why this thread is a wee bit slow.

My hypothesis: Male Farkers have been too distracted by the Hooters Swimsuit contest to bother with low hanging fruit.

T Baggins: More generally, when someone of ordinary cognitive ability who did something carelessly or intentionally stupid to cause a temporary/reversible not-overly-serious mental or speech impairment.

Pro tip: do not try this on people who sound retarded because they are wearing a hockey mouth guard. It will end badly.

T Baggins: Oh, and people with half their mouth numbed from dental unaesthetic...idiotic DJs could do a regular call-in segment with dental patients.

Oh, geez, thanks for the reminder. Many years ago I actually did a job interview in that condition. I had no idea the anesthetic would last so long (first timer). For reasons too boring to get into I had no clue how bad I sounded until I arrived at reception and said "Hurruh, huhm huhr huh huh hurruruh."

No, I didn't get the job.

My aunt is mentally handicapped and she's awesome.

Dear Goodness.... For all of the "cheeto's fingered, nose-pickin', Internet tough guy, never-had-a-date, livin'-in-Mom's-basement, studman69s? DON'T BREED.

Developmental disabled children are a parent's nightmare..... The fact that a true parent chooses to take care of them all their life is a beautiful, and easy, choice to make. Yet, these parents grow old and will be outlived likely by the child in need.... Who will probably end up in some governmental assisted living program cared for by people who don't give a damn about them.

I have been a member of the FARK community for a LONG time. Yet it never ceases to amaze me what people post to get acceptance and a laugh from faceless strangers. If you want to laugh at people with developmental issues? Go ahead..... Yet? Please don't breed. I would hate to think of how you would treat a developmentally disabled child...... If you could find a woman to breed with you.

Go ahead..... Post your lame-ass "Welcome to Fark" pics..... make yourself feel better....Feel superior by supporting an overused meme.... I've had several "Welcome-to-Fark" pics posted in response to my comments in the nearly 10 years I've been here....... a few more won't bother me at all.

I leave the TV on for the dogs while I'm at work every day, just to leave some background noise on. I turn it to the free movie channel with antenna TV but for about half an hour it's a videotaped radio morning show.... a morning radio show, on TV. Anyways, I always feel bad for the half hour of that they have to endure before they start playing the movies.

Is this the same one from last week? Not to defend the DJ, who is most certainly a douche, but he didn't set out to make fun of someone with Down's Syndrome, and apparently didn't even know the person was retarded until the family called the news and acted all indignant. He was having trouble understanding her, asked if she had a speech impediment, and kind of tried to make a random wrong number and a mush-mouth caller into a funny bit and failed. But he didn't call her, didn't start making retard jokes, didn't do anything that would justify him losing his job. He had no idea that this person was retarded and probably would have acted differently if he'd known.

Of course, it always make sense to play the victim and get at least bonus sympathy, which is what the retarded girl and her family are doing, but this is hardly a tragically withering situation that destroyed the retarded girl for the rest of her life. It was a dud joke that went nowhere, and certainly didn't go into the realm of cruelty.

Retarded.

Had to check, based on the very real possibility of it being one of our local afternoon DJs.

Shame, too. Station plays great music, but the DJ makes the station unbearable to listen to during the weekday afternoons.

I already figured Radio DJs were some lower order of life. This is further confirmation, nothing more.

At what age do people with Down Syndrome stop being kids?  These guys were suspended for making fun of a grown adult who called their radio station.  Way to be sensational, there, hypocrites.

I mean seriously, would it be OK if she wasn't retarded, just profoundly deaf from birth? Or had suffered a stroke? Or had lost part of her jaw or throat to cancer, affecting her ability to speak? Or suffered brain damage at the hands of a hit-and-run driver? (And yes, I have friends and relatives in every one of those circumstances).

Help me out here Farkers, which instances of sounding retarded is it OK to make fun of? I need some kind of scorecard to keep up.

Any use of the word "horrid" by a female not between the ages of 18 to 42 that's relatively good looking and at least mostly naked or almost entirely naked in a sex cosplay, or by any man. Those are pretty retarded instances it's OK to make fun of.

We are talking about a DJ on a Top 40/CHR station. They have the IQ of hamburger and an ego the size of Texas.
Typically, they don't give a rats behind. They are just trying to be cool. At least the management of the station has some solid cajones to force their freakshow to apologize. That isn't typcial either.

Dumb-Ass-Monkey: Oh please

I've heard the actual bit, and he didn't do anything wrong. She was a random caller, he couldn't understand her. After asking a few times about why he couldn't understand her, she kept talking. He never said anything about her being retarded, never even suggested it. The first time anyone mentioned that she was a Downs "kid" is when her parents started complaining that he was mocking their precious snowflake, long after the fact. TFA is stunningly one-sided in the coverage, making it appear that he picked her to be his victim.

If you listen to the video in the article he mentions getting a text saying the girl might be mentally retarded and suggesting he go easy on her.

If you're a radio DJ, go back to school and apply yourself until you learn skills that are useful. You probably barely have a job as it is, and your field is only shrinking and becoming less relevant every single day.

Some more free advice : No one cares about you, the guy who's on before you, or the skanky little chick your station hired to drum up male ratings. You're all completely replaceable and entirely forgetable.

/Former DJ who got a real job.

This. /Unless you're the "morning man" in a huge market, the pay sucks badly and you have no benefits. And I might add: You might have to move out of town in order to get taken seriously as a job applicant if you were too well known as a DJ in that area.

Also, broadcast folks (radio and tv) are some of the smartest folks I've ever met. There's a lot more to the job than just "tell jokes and play music." You get to meet a LOT of really fascinating people and ask them questions -- and no other job I've ever worked has required such a high level of "you better know how to think fast -- damn fast -- on your feet.

Be a bit more specific. There are broadcast folks who are indeed top notch people who can not only spin a joke but drop to dead seriousness in emergencies. But there are others who aren't in it for that and I've unfortunately had the displeasure to work with them. The vast majority on CHR/Top 40 formats. There is something grotesquely juvenile about the format and something like this shows. But even Morning Shows can get nailed too. I know of two in my market who went too far and were required to apologize.
Part of the problem is people are too politically correct and overly sensitive. Saying "hi" to someone will soon cross the line.

2013-02-04 05:37:35 PM
The fun part, of course, is that DJs are helping radio along to its sad little death.

Is this like how on Fark it's bad to make fun of gay people, but totally cool to insult someone by calling them get if they profess to be straight, like a Republican or a famous Scientologist?
