Considering Dell's penetration (heh heh... I said 'penetration') of the Enterprise market, their use of Dell
PCs could be excused by assuming they were purchased by the University. I also realize that most
University professors have a great deal of latitude in their purchasing, but there is such a thing as
suspension of disbelief.

IIRC, they're usually Alienware. Writers probably let the xtremegamer stereotype override the lab monkey stereotype.

Dell owns Alienware (who also used to place on PSYCH, though for the past couple of seasons Shawn & Gus have
been using Macs).


Plus, while Dell's consumer products may leave something to be desired, their high-end developer machines (like the XPS line) are solid work machines.

It's been on netflix streaming for a while.


And was there any fanfare? Did it help cause a spike in signups? Did it get them a lot of press?

These are all reasons why someone might remake "House of Cards" - or anything else that might be considered good television ripe for an update.

If I was a big time producer I'd go out of my way to have anachronistic product placement. Like a dude pulls out a modern laptop, opens it up, and on the case it says 'Amiga.' Or a guy takes out his phone and it has a 'WorldCom' sticker.

Don't you think perception is the issue here?  You see Apple logos everywhere where the rest of us really don't.  Maybe it's the unfamiliarity in your daily life, sometimes it seems like every time a PC owners sees an Apple logo it's the end of the world.  Lighten up francis indeed!

I've noticed that there is a disproportionate number of Apple macs in movies and TV shows.  The mac penetration of the market is sitting at about 10 percent, give or take, and it is far higher in mass media.  Why?  A lot of the people that do movies and TV use macs.  FCP is used on a lot of shows (or at least it used to).  It's how these use the gui to hack the IP, right?

Some of you younger Farkers probably don't remember the early 1980s, when there really was such a thing as  generic branded productsthat had black & white labels that just said the name of the product, such as "BEER", "POTATO CHIPS", "RAVIOLI-SHAPED PASTA IN SAUCE", "NAPKINS", "CIGARETTES" or "COLA". It looked a lot like the Dharma Initiative labels from LOST, except without the Dharma logo.

You still see the same sorts of products today, of course, but these days they have the store label on them, so you're getting Meijer brand potato chips, Walmart's store brand of cola, or Walgreen's canned pasta.

But back in the day, this was what we got:

Well, first of all, Apple may be more aggressive with their product placement campaigns. It's just another form of advertising. You might as well complain about there being so many Apple billboards when you drive down the highway. As an advertiser, Apple probably likes their computers being shown in contexts where you don't often see them (e.g., hospitals) because it helps them dispel the notion that their computers are not for business or tech, or are computers only for the elite.

Secondly, Apple is arguably the noisiest brand-consious company in the world, and their products have stand-out physical designs, so when you see their products placed in your TV shows, they're far more likely to stand out and far more likely to stick in your brain.

If you're prone to notice such things, you probably can remember the last time you saw an Apple product placement. But do you remember when you last saw an HP or Dell product placement? I'm guessing not, even though you've probably seen them a dozen times or more just in the last week.

Everybody knows what a MacBook looks like. But can you tell me off the top of your head what a Dell laptop looks like, or a HP laptop looks like? Both companies have many designs. When you see Dell or HP, you probably just see "computer." When you see an Apple laptop, you think "Apple."

So of course you're bound to notice the product placement more when it's an Apple product.

So while it may be true that Apple has more (and/or more conspicuous) product placement than other brands, the perception that they  dominate is just that - a perception.

If you google, you can find several sites that do product-placement spotting, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive repository.

Think just about computers.  Not phones, not tablets, just computers.  In the course of a given day how likely is it that you'll not see a single PC?  Now ask the same question about Macs.  Of course you might work in a place that uses Macs, so this might not apply to you.  I have a Mac and there are weeks at a time that I don't see a single Mac, plus most of the times that I see a Mac guess what OS is being used?  Windows 7.  Macs are overexposed in the world of entertainment.  They are the white people of computers, representing a much larger percentage of the population than they do in real life.

What's your point? I was saying Apple products have a tendency to stand out anyway, so it's not surprising that people would notice them more when placed in TV programs. Other computer brands don't stand out that way, so they're more likely to go unnoticed.

Apple may do more product placement, but it's very likely people also tend to remember seeing Apple products more than others because they stand out. They have very small line of high-profile, uniquely designed products. You could see twice as many Dell products as Apple products in a TV show and likely not notice because Dell products don't have the same recognition factor.

Personally the problem I have with product placement is that if it becomes a key part of the way TV is funded then it selects for certain themes and genres - fantasy and to an extent sci-fi series could be marginalized for example as the opportunities for product placement is reduced (and even branding exercises are going to be harder even in sci-fi)

While a lot of it is "when you need a computer for a prop, you've probably got a bunch of macs in the store-room donated for the purpose", it's actually not inconceivable, most imagers and so on just run to a software interface with a connector nowadays, the days when they had to be a PC because you needed to install an interpreter card are pretty much gone.

//Smartphone, Kindle, two monitors on the desk right now.  I wasn't terribly impressed by the array of devices either.

Well its expensive to make TV shows these days.  Unless its a reality show.  So product placement allows for the extra scratch needed to film it.  I don't mind as long as the shows are actually good.

Engineer and trained Physcist here. iPhone user. The Dev tools are the best in the industry. Creating apps is miles easier.

I dig Android, no hating here. I think the competition has been an excellent motive force for both platforms. But iOS (and OS X) are an engineers dream.

Go to a Dev conference sometime or the physics department of your local U and see what the pros are packing.

Actually, I've remembered the most egregious product placement in history:  the OJ Simpson trial.

Sony arranged for special computer monitors to be delivered to the LA Courthouse for use during the
trial that were prominently emblazoned with the SONY logo on the back, especially the one that sat on
Judge Ito's desk and was almost always visible when he was on screen.

The standard Trinitron monitors didn't have the SONY logo on the back:  I know because I used to sell them
for a living and was very familiar with what they looked like.

I was in a meeting last night. 12 people, 12 ipads, 11 iphones, 1 (whatever the samsung phone is called)

and if it is product placement, good. i'd rather watch a show uninterrupted than every ten minutes being forced to watch or fast forward through commercials.

Well yeah. In real life they'd use gaming desktops they built themselves. In the show they need to use laptops so they can get everyone in the shot in the living room, so they end up using Alienware (Dell) and XPS (Dell).

Not saying it makes the show unwatchable for me, but every time I see it, I notice it.

Software engineer here, one who has been developing mobile apps since 2006! (yes, before the iPhone). Having developed many apps for Android over the years during which I've gained quite a bit of in-depth knowledge of the OS  I would't use one as my personal phone in in thousand years. Android is popular because it's cheap, not because it's good.

100 Watt Walrus: I work in IT and QA. I'd say 2/3 of the phones I see among my fellow geeks are iPhones, and about half of them use MacBook Pros as their daily drivers. Curiously, 80% of their tablets are Android.

/Typing on a MacBook Pro now, with an iPod Touch in my pocket, an Acer Android tablet next to me, and two Windows machines at my desk (one XP and one W7).


Pointing out again that working in tech support for some office isn't the same as being a PhD research professor in quantum mechanics.

The mechanic at Dunn Tire might drive a Prius, that doesn't mean it is an amazing car for gear heads.

Because they are/were the only phone that met classified security clearance for a while. I know they did a "government" version of the Galaxy S3 for that purpose and I think DARPA jacked some iPhones to make them work.

Not sure if trolling, or just a gorp. We don't subscribe to petty hardware jealousy. We use what gets the job done.


Exactly the point. Impossible to get the job done when your phone is incapable of displaying the folder hierarchy tree or other basic computing functions.

I keed, I keed. Seriously though, at least iCarly used a made up brand for all their stuff. The Warehouse 13 Toyota placement is getting old. The first episode where Jinks joined the Warehouse actually had Claudia rattling off the features of the Prius Jinks was driving. The webisodes they made for the show are pretty obnoxious with product placement too.


Not that I've ever watched iCarly (no really, I haven't, FU pedos) it is pretty obvious that the pear is supposed to be an apple. If they had made something generic and techy it would have been better.

They aren't as much aggressive as they are manipulative. For example, they donate a lot of computers to schools. They don't do this to "give back" or to "be nice", they do it because they want to indoctrinate kids at a young age. If the only computer you use at school is a mac, when you get to the grown up world and sit down at a windows pc, you won't know what to do.

And it has worked pretty well. That is why you're seeing more requests for apple computers in offices these days.

They do the same thing in movies. Just like subliminal advertising for smoking in Lassie, apple wants to bend and warp your mind so when you think of cool action guy you remember him using an iPhone and if you want your pathetic life to have meaning you must have an iPhone too.

People don't want to replace all the apple crap in movies and tv with android or windows, they want to replace it with a generic phone or computer so it doesn't have to be an annoying intrusion into their consciousness.

Oh, Android is full of great ideas I don't deny that, it's just that they are horribly executed. It's like most open source software, overengineered, poorly documented, unpolished and sort-of-works.

That's cute.

You know how astronomy is not about telescopes ? In the same way computer science is not about computers; it's badly named in English, in most other languages e.g. Dutch it's called 'informatica' or something similar. CS is about information and processing it, it's just that computers make 'informatica' possible.

All other sciences are just an applied and limited form of 'informatica' that only deals with a specific kind of information.

There's a nasty social expectation (and rumor that it's required) for every journalism student to have a Macbook and related accessories for the Journalism school. There's also a nice wing in every computer lab filled with Macs.  They aren't used very much.  Usually a few students use them, and then once the windows stations the more adventurous Windows users apprehensively try to use the Macs.  It doesn't help that they're not well maintained.  The mouse roller doesn't scroll properly (that or I don't know how to use a Mac properly either, but hey, they're supposed to be intuitive, right?).

Regardless, those Macs are there because Apple pushes them.  But if they're 10% of the market share, who can blame them for pushing adoption?  Get people to like your computer when it's free to use, and they might be willing to spend money on it later.  If they've never used a Mac they're unlikely to simply make the transition spontaneously.  Survival of the fittest, etc etc.

A high percentage of mac users also use Windows (either via parallels or an actual other machine).  Very few (primary) Windows users use macs.

There's a nasty social expectation (and rumor that it's required) for every journalism student to have a Macbook and related accessories for the Journalism school. There's also a nice wing in every computer lab filled with Macs.  They aren't used very much.  Usually a few students use them, and then once the windows stations the more adventurous Windows users apprehensively try to use the Macs.  It doesn't help that they're not well maintained.  The mouse roller doesn't scroll properly (that or I don't know how to use a Mac properly either, but hey, they're supposed to be intuitive, right?).

Regardless, those Macs are there because Apple pushes them.  But if they're 10% of the market share, who can blame them for pushing adoption?  Get people to like your computer when it's free to use, and they might be willing to spend money on it later.  If they've never used a Mac they're unlikely to simply make the transition spontaneously.  Survival of the fittest, etc etc.


In my graduating electrical engineering class, there was only one person who had a macbook pro. The majority of the class had windows, and a couple ran linux.

When I took a poli sci elective, my class looked a lot like the pic you've posted.

Bullseyed: 100 Watt Walrus: I work in IT and QA. I'd say 2/3 of the phones I see among my fellow geeks are iPhones, and about half of them use MacBook Pros as their daily drivers. Curiously, 80% of their tablets are Android.

/Typing on a MacBook Pro now, with an iPod Touch in my pocket, an Acer Android tablet next to me, and two Windows machines at my desk (one XP and one W7).

Pointing out again that working in tech support for some office isn't the same as being a PhD research professor in quantum mechanics.

The mechanic at Dunn Tire might drive a Prius, that doesn't mean it is an amazing car for gear heads.


I guess I misconstrued your use of the term "engineer." I am an engineer. Most everyone I work with is an engineer. But apparently not what you had in mind.

They aren't as much aggressive as they are manipulative. For example, they donate a lot of computers to schools. They don't do this to "give back" or to "be nice", they do it because they want to indoctrinate kids at a young age. If the only computer you use at school is a mac, when you get to the grown up world and sit down at a windows pc, you won't know what to do.

And it has worked pretty well. That is why you're seeing more requests for apple computers in offices these days.

They do the same thing in movies. Just like subliminal advertising for smoking in Lassie, apple wants to bend and warp your mind so when you think of cool action guy you remember him using an iPhone and if you want your pathetic life to have meaning you must have an iPhone too.


Do they twist their mustache and cackle an evil cackle while being "manipulative" and trying to "indoctrinate kids at a young age" and trying to "bend and warp your mind"? Thank goodness people like you are here to fight the good fight against the evil empire! Save me, Luke! Save me, Jeebus!

People don't want to replace all the apple crap in movies and tv with android or windows, they want to replace it with a generic phone or computer so it doesn't have to be an annoying intrusion into their consciousness.

Who are these "people" you speak of? And if this is your position, why aren't your panties in a twist about all product placement? Why aren't you out there campaigning against billboards being an "annoying intrusion" into your freeway drive, and Sunday circulars being an "annoying intrusion" into your newspaper, and TV commercials being an "intrusion" into your favorite shows - which is literally true, as opposed to the fact that characters use *gasp!* brand name products.
