Hernandez claimed his family was being threatened.

Yeah, by him.

I wonder if he was a domestically violent person before his injury? I also wonder how much damage he suffered from his shot to the head.

Depending on if there was damage to his brain, and where, it might cause violent behavior like this.

It's often difficult to get the strength back in your grip after a stroke, and a gunshot would must be at least as bad.

This is an inspiring example of someone overcoming their disabilities to live a normal* life.

So why hasn't the right made a hero out of this guy to fight Giffords?

He's not spewing any derp about the evils of taxes and how there wouldn't have to be that many sheriffs deputies employed if everyone carried a gun (cept for those "evil darkies").

I interned one summer for an attorney who specialized in doing traumatic brain injury and closed head injury litigation.   It is truly terrifying how radically all the basic qualities of what we like to think of as our "personality" can be changed by an organic cause.

Cythraul: I wonder if he was a domestically violent person before his injury?

Well, he was a cop, so I imagine he went around assaulting people on a fairly regular basis, it's just that now he's off the force so it's harder to get away with it.

Yes, sadly. Personality changes are not unheard of after major head trauma. Was the original injury in the frontal cortex or prefrontal cortex? There a personality change is a give in.

Probably. Brain injuries are almost always serious. Gilford got lucky.

Yep. We're nothing but meat. Too bad more people don't realize that. They might work harder toward improving conditions in this life.

His survival of a gunshot to the head was surely Divine Providence. God really hates the homeless. And women.

TBI/CHI can be pretty darn variable. one guy can get a two inch pipe through the noggin and be fine , maybe better than before. another guy gets the same thing, and he's reduced to clucking like a chicken and needs to be followed with a mop.

tldr brains totes cray

Yeah, the sane position is to ignore every contributing factor to a tragedy and just move on as if nothing has ever happened.

GAT_00: Yeah, the sane position is to ignore every contributing factor to a tragedy and just move on as if nothing has ever happened.

The sane thing is to NOT do the following:
1. Observe how sparse details of a tragedy superficially fit (sort of) into one's infantile political view.
2. Froth at the mouth and make a bunch of other people get mad too, so that pointless laws are passed by lawmakers that are freaked out by all their constituents frothing at the mouth.
3. ?????
4. 10 years later, get on internet message boards and complain about dumbass laws.
5. Loop back to 1.
6. Profit.

As you can see, this plan is retarded because it is impossible to reach the Profit step.

This plan may or may not be more sane:
1. Observe how sparse details of a tragedy illustrate that the world can be complicated and brutal.
2. Ponder on the meaning of life.
3. Wish the best to all involved.
4. Profit.

You don't even need a ???? step in this sane plan.

You sound like a tea bagger from the negaverse. You're farking crazy. This guy got shot in the head by a criminal. Most likely, the frontal cortex was injured leaving him with poor impulse control and emotional lability. The fact that you have some sort of political scouting sheet where you divvy people up by political ideologies like some sort of 3rd grade kickball game and that's the only thing you are able to take away from a tragedy like this is absolutely farking terrifying. I'm the libbies lib that ever libbed. I believe in tight gun control, stringent back ground checks, and a complete overhaul of our mental health system. None of this changes how farking scary it is to know that people like you and the tea baggers who are incapable of viewing the world without the distorted lenses of rabid political rhetoric.

If you want a truly shocking story, some guy got a brain tumor and turned into a pedophile. Once the tumor was removed, he went back to normal.

"The sudden and uncontrollable paedophilia exhibited by a 40-year-old man was caused by an egg-sized brain tumour, his doctors have told a scientific conference. And once the tumour had been removed, his sex-obsession disappeared.
The cancer was located in the right lobe of the orbifrontal cortex, which is known to be tied to judgment, impulse control and social behaviour. But neurologists Russell Swerdlow and Jeffrey Burns, of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, believe it is the first reported case linking damage to the region with paedophilia."

Yeah, and wealthy people can do something other than trying to avoid paying taxes. If me paying more taxes than I am required to made any sort of dent in the national debt, I would be all for it, but the problem is that EVERYONE has to pay into this thing called "society" that we live in.
