Any pseudo-random or chaotic variation around a core trend will see short-term stalls or very temporary reversals in the pattern, along with sudden bursts of extraordinary growth or decline in the direction of the trend. A perfect example accessible on a shorter time scale is the stock market. The gross trend since January of 2009 has been overwhelmingly positive, but you see days of sharp declines or periods of stagnation in the data over the last four years.
