It's not functional if you have to control it.

Will it randomly bump your arm so you miss when shooting at Boba Fett?

The Force?

At first I was like meh, but then I saw it attending charity events at the end of the clip, and I am totally approving now.

I assume with the new IP rights owner, Disney, will not have the same tolerance for this type of fan enthusiasm. R2D2 replicant will be confiscated, and start new job as Star Tours greeter as soon as lawyers finish watching the Super Bowl.

I don't know how Disney will play ball, but George always seemed to like fans being fanatic. Every time some fan gets attention that fan is doing a million dollars with of advertising.

/Meanwhile I'm a geek that doesn't own any star wars or LotR DVDs.

So far, the fan groups have been told that Disney is quite happy with us and to proceed as normal. I think Disney understands that shutting them down would be a huge PR disaster, especially now that the 501st is an actual registered charity organization.

Who the hell Is THAT??!?!

Star Trek is so much better than Star Wars.  But only the first two series.  The rest...

So, you can build an oversized toy look alike of an artificially intelligent robot from a movie? Wow! Nobody else has done that in the last 10 years.

Peter Frampton can sympathize.

Step 1) Find someone who knows what the f*ck they're doing
Step 2) Pay them to make you the R2-D2
Step 3) Profit

I can't wait to get one of these. It's a real biatch rerouting power to various systems on my X-Wing without a decent astromech.

Can you use it as a pipe?

Yes well what else is a 40 year old geek with a good looking wife, two kids, paid off home, three cars, and a six figure salary supposed to spend their money on? Sports crap?

I'm sorry you took Liberal Arts, English, Philosophy or went on to get a JD degree, but if you had applied your self in math class you too could have gotten a bachelors in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering and been making a great salary for the last 20 years too.

Sounds like someone is pissed that they missed so many parties.

Be sure to keep them fitted with a restraining bolt, or they'll pick up bad habits.  R2 units love their vices.

You Star Wars dorks are touchy. You are so childishly red-faced with anger that you need to make up a life story for me that allows you to feel like less of an idiot? Seriously, you get a zero for personality as well as your guesses.

While between contracts a few years ago, I converted drawings for R2D2 parts I found online into files for ProE.  I may yet have them laser cut in aluminum, but would need to be out of work again I think.

justanothersumguy: Nerd has serious skills.

Well... not necessarily. There are plenty of parts out there to be gotten from the various builders - you can pretty much order nearly everything over the course of a weekend. Yes, putting it together will take time, but when you can essentially start with a meccano or lego set, it doesn't take too much...

A few people do treat it as a bit more (like learning about as much AI, robot navigation, electronics, and mechatronics as possible) of an engineering challenge - R2 isn't as practical a robot as he could be... Technically, the guy who put a RaspberryPi into the quarter-size toy one more serious skills than someone who just buys bits and bolts them together.

FARK the Force.  If R2 is on your side, you win.   I don't know why, but that's how it works.
