That's funny cause I didn't read the headline at all but merely scanned it to see if it was boob-related and therefore making the thread worthwhile to look at.

Yep, Europe and Australia lead the way in banking and currency tech, Canada adopts it well before the US, and eventually, the US catches up.

Seriously, the last 3 times I've been down there, no one uses the Credit Card chip tech, they still sign for things. It's cute.

The cultural situation in the US is that governments don't feel as if they can (or even ought to) regulate small matters such as this.  Hence, the US doesn't force people to use metric or adopt superior monetary technology.

Most other countries who've moved onto better systems did it not because they are more willing to embrace change than America, but because they have government more willing to force that change upon them.

Yeah, but don't you know that there are always going to be "those people" who will go through a line at a register twice just so that their two purchases will be rounded up 2 cents instead of one purchase rounded down one.  Netting them 5 cents.

I can remember penny candy, so I will be a bit nostalgic for the little brown buggers.

On the other hand, people are already losing more dimes to make up for the pennies they used to lose, and it's easier to spot a dime. I pick up a fair amount of money each year, including a few bills, and the change I set aside goes a good ways towards the cost of a ticket home for Christmas.

Some other provinces (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) had their own currency before Confederaton (1867) so there may be earlier pennies of interest to coin collectors. My Father found a New Brunswick penny once and it was a least as big as a quarter, if not fifty-cent piece, today.

I give my pennies to the guys usually panhandling on the freeway exit nearest my house, one who used to buy me booze sometimes when I was underage. Its the least I can do for that guy. If Im feeling generous Ill kick him down some roaches from the ash tray.

I wouldnt have a heart attack if we stopped using pennies today, too numerous and its a hassle to do anything with em. Itll take me forever to sort out a few thousand pennies and Ill get a few bucks at best.

the USA should be taking anything they can get.

The problem with chip and PIN is that it's hackable despite the marketing saying it's better than swipe cards. It's trivial to clone one with a compromised point of sale terminal.

Making that worse is that the banks in countries who use chip and PIN refuse to credit customers victimized by this and the cardholder is often saddled with several hundred dollars worth of fraudulent transactions before the card is disabled.

See: Criminals Crack European 'Chip-and-PIN' Cash-Card Security

And

Banks, meanwhile, are standing firmly behind EMV and chip-and-PIN and are refusing to refund customers protesting fraudulent transactions, banks are telling customers EMV is secure and they either are mistaken about a transaction, or are lying.

Fark banks.

There's an app answer for that. It's not a great answer. The answer's basically "No, fark off." I read somewhere that removing pennies from circulation would be a very slight but definite inflationary pressure, which I thought was interesting. But this is not that answer.

All I can tell you is that the ability of that person to 'hack' that transaction was a simple parameter that the Card Issuer should have set and didn't.   Pretty sure they learned their lesson.

Chip and PIN security is far stronger than Mag Stripe.  Mag Stripe is 70's technology designed for convenience with no security in mind at all.   Don't believe me?   Ask a banker in the cards side about something called 'Fraud Migration'.

The problem is that it's more widespread than the banks want to admit and it means that victims have to pay the losses in the thousands of euros/pounds.

All it did was give an excuse so the banks don't have to fix it and customers contine to get screwed.

Read the original whitepaper on the hack.
