Penny tells Canadians: Too bad we have no time to rewind.

Penny tells Canadians: Let's walk, let's talk.

Will stop distributing pennies tomorrow. They stopped manufacturing them last May.

Portia: I read the headline as "Canada will stop making penises."

That's funny cause I didn't read the headline at all but merely scanned it to see if it was boob-related and therefore making the thread worthwhile to look at.

Which year is it? 1858 or 1885? Yes, I read half the article.

* looks left*

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy....

But,

It's a conspiracy!!!

It's a very sneaky way to increase taxes and discourage people from using cash.

As a bonus, maybe we can finally stop with the ninety nine cent crap.

Yep, Europe and Australia lead the way in banking and currency tech, Canada adopts it well before the US, and eventually, the US catches up.

Seriously, the last 3 times I've been down there, no one uses the Credit Card chip tech, they still sign for things. It's cute.

This gives me anxiety. I work with money and we're going to start rounding. I'm a very precise person.

I'll have to get over it.

Except when it comes to time. Back when W Bush wanted to look like he was doing something about oil prices without actually doing anything, he had Daylight Saving Time moved. Canada meekly went right along with Bush's commandment. Kind of hard to be a leader when you let your neighbor dictate when you wake up and when you go to sleep.

You know if that happens every tax in the US will be rounded up. Killing the penny is is effectively tax increases and because of that the penny in the US won't die.

All the other countries use rounding for cash transactions, and pennies for electronic stuff. Don't think it would change much for you.

They should do that here. That way, street organ grinders will be relieved of the duty of training their monkeys only to accept silver colored coins.

d.g. regina.
Dei Gratia Regina (often abbreviated to D. G. Regina and seen as D·G·REGINA) is a Latin title meaning By the Grace of God, Queen.

/Religion: Destroying the world since child molesters found out that they could molest more children if they ran some type of organization that seems nice on the surface but is disgusting below, kinda like the boy scouts.

A lot of folks don't realize that this is on a total transaction, not on an item for item basis.

The cultural situation in the US is that governments don't feel as if they can (or even ought to) regulate small matters such as this.  Hence, the US doesn't force people to use metric or adopt superior monetary technology.

Most other countries who've moved onto better systems did it not because they are more willing to embrace change than America, but because they have government more willing to force that change upon them.

Yeah, but don't you know that there are always going to be "those people" who will go through a line at a register twice just so that their two purchases will be rounded up 2 cents instead of one purchase rounded down one.  Netting them 5 cents.

/Canadian cents, too

I can remember penny candy, so I will be a bit nostalgic for the little brown buggers.

On the other hand, people are already losing more dimes to make up for the pennies they used to lose, and it's easier to spot a dime. I pick up a fair amount of money each year, including a few bills, and the change I set aside goes a good ways towards the cost of a ticket home for Christmas.

Some other provinces (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) had their own currency before Confederaton (1867) so there may be earlier pennies of interest to coin collectors. My Father found a New Brunswick penny once and it was a least as big as a quarter, if not fifty-cent piece, today.

I have been hoarding pennies and have a big-ass pickle jar full of them.  I'm gonna be the old guy holding up the check-out line while he counts out exact change.
