So from the article, yes you could feed your dog a vegan diet and it won't starve him.  That said why would you unless the reason you're a vegan has nothing to do with health and if that's the case why are you enslaving a dog?

My dog will eat tofu if it's flavored with cat poop.

Tofu is not a meat replacement. It's beans.

Yeah, it's animal slavery.  I can confirm that dogs do in fact find salad delicious but I think it's bizarre to deny your dogs meat.  Give them a balanced diet.

Also, dogs will eat just about anything. I wouldn't be too worried.

Holy crap, who the hell names their pets that? This guy shouldn't be allowed to own pets.

Funny how people who claim to respect animals don't respect their dogs.

Dogs don't think about meat and ethics the same way a vegan does, so how is it ethical to force them into the vegan "philosophy"?

Besides, it is a fashion, and not a "philosophy" anyway.

Valid point: people like dogs can eat whatever and stay alive. IMHO since there are people working hard to make high quality dog foods and there are steaks in the supermarket, make your puppy happy. We are not living under duress hand to mouth. Stop and think what dogs ate when they ran wild in packs.

Yeah, this. If you're so concerned about the moral well-being of animals, let them live in wild packs and forage for their own food and stop exploiting them for your own selfish needs. And don't give them such homoghey names, you freaks.

"When they call it byproduct, it could be 80 per cent chicken and 20 per cent scraps," said Sullivan. "There's no way to trust that."

This, this is the root of the problem.  You know, when a carnivorous animal eats another animal, the FIRST bits they go for are the internal organs, the parts that humans tend to avoid like the plague.   They could give a shiat if the meat is sirloin or "pink slime", it's all food to them.

Some years back I was at a party (in Berkeley, of course) and some stupid biatch started telling me how she was converting her cat to a vegan diet of tofu.  I was almost thrown out of the party when I started yelling at her.

2013-02-03 05:41:42 PM
I have not eaten meat in 17 years, but this is retarded.
A dog's digestive track is short. Slow digesting foods won't be processed fully. Essentially, these people are giving them nothing but roughage.

I lived with an Australian Shepherd who, if given the choice, would go for spicy over meaty every time.  If I smothered a bean and cheese burrito with hot sauce and put it down next to a carne asada burrito she'd go for the one with hot sauce every time.

She also ate every habanero pepper off of a plant we had growing in the backyard.   That biatch loved her veggies, especially if they were spicy.

They go for the stomach and gut especially, that's how they get their vegetable matter. Contrary to what the vegan in the article stated, they are not omnivores, they do not have all the enzymes necessary. It has to be predigested for them by herbivores. The good brands of dog food will actually include these enzymes along with the food so they're not simply passing it when they eat.

Will most dogs happily scarf down veggies? Sure, in fact any dog owner knows that they'll eat almost anything, they don't know if it's good for them or not.

2013-02-03 05:47:32 PM
If you starve the poor dog, it'll eat anything after a while.  Those Doxies are eating the vegetables because it's all they're given.  Give them a choice and they'll be all over some Alpo without even looking at a carrot.

Most of those horror stories seem to feature people who were crazy, so I'm not sure there's the correlation/causation link you're hoping for there.

careful with the onions, they're known to be poisonous to dogs, not 100% sure but the turnips may be as well.

Want a generally helpful hint on telling what something is supposed to eat? Look at their teeth. Sharp pointed teeth for tearing flesh evolved that way for carnivores. Thick broad teeth for grinding plant matter evolved that way for herbivores. Animals with a combination of both evolved to be omnivores. Chances are the digestive tracts of these three groups are similarly equipped to handle those types of food.

Dogs are meant to be carnivores. Humans are meant to be omnivores. Veganism goes against nature. The enamel on our own teeth is too thin to have evolved for eating only plants over a long period of time, plus our incisors and canines are designed for consuming flesh. More importantly however is how the rest of the body digests food and is able to take nutrients and energy for life. Humans or dogs eating only plants, even if you mash them into the shape of a steak, is just going against the basic physiology of the body.

Basic health > social ideas.  Veganism is bad for you. And it's bad for your dog.

Wolves evolved to eat animals and their gut contents which is generally not meat.

Dogs evolved from wolves to eat whatever their humans eat. See "Your dog, but not your wolf, wants pasts",

My dog loved carrots for some reason. Little carrot sticks made great treats and training toys.
That said he also loved a good cheese burger, a smoked cows leg bone, meat based dog foods, and cheese.
Meh, I'll feed my dog what he wants, what makes him happy, and isn't toxic enough to really hurt him.
I figure, hay, if it might give him cancer in 30 years then its really not an issue.

This, for god's sake.  If god had intended us to be vegan, she would have given us a stomach with four segments to digest vegetable matter, like cows.  She didn't.  She wouldn't have given us canine teeth with roots that reach into your cranium (more or less).  The fact that vegans find reality icky is a problem with them, not reality.  Oh, and the fact that vegan's brains are large enough to support idiot thinking is because they are in fact, not vegans.

/And yes, I and my dog want steak.

My dogs will literally eat anything, up to and including their own/each other's waste.  They've eaten plastic bags, tennis balls, clothes, vegetable oil (that was a riot), stink bugs, spiders, hair... everything.  Just because they will eat it, doesn't mean it's good for them, they eat things pretty much to prevent the other dogs from eating it.  So of course they'll eat a Vegan diet, but that's not what they should be eating.

Bottom line:

Don't shove your beliefs on others.  ESPECIALLY for animals.

You want to be a vegan?  All the more power to you.  But don't make your pets follow your lifestyle.

She seemed to save them up for when she was mad at one of us for some reason.  If I ate dinner without feeding her at the same time she was fairly obnoxious.
