A massive military-industrial complex, being necessary to the capitalist state, the right of the government to tax its citizens shall not be infringed.

I like things like a well-funded fire department, police department, and military, as well as things like roads and bridges, NASA, safe drinking water, food that has passed inspection, and education. So, yea, I don't give a flying f*ck about paying taxes.

Conservatives think rich people are paying all the taxes and that poor people (who have no money) should pay more. It's not fair to tax the wealthy's income and not tax people who don't have income.

I'm just a middle class guy who pays the same effective rate as Mitt and wonders how the rich can be paying all the taxes when they've clearly escaped the progressive aspect of the system long ago.

Because they write the tax code, that's how.  Or their lobbyists do it for them.

I wonder how much of the hatred of income tax in the USA is down to the worse-than-third-world way in which it's implemented.

39% of every one of my paychecks go to taxes.

8.25% goes to sales taxes.

$527 a month goes to property taxes, and I have an average house.

I'm not even done with the list, but after Obama and company get done, I get to keep about 22% of what I make.

Yeah, I love taxes.

Eliminate the waste and you could pay for all of that with a fraction of the current revenue. Which of course would mean more money for us to spend as we like.

I know someone who actually reads Human Events.

She's such a nice person too but she also spouts off that Ron Paul nonsense and linking to sites like these on her Facebook page.

I'm still friends with her, I just try to look past all the Ron Paul garbage on her FB page.

Is this Frank Lutz's website?  Who would think to use the name "Human Events" for a website claiming to be written by "POWERFUL CONSERVATIVE VOICES"?

So they tax my hourly pay, by federal, and state, and SS. What's left is mine right? Nope. Go fuel up your car you bought (which was taxed) and pay a tax on per gallon. Go buy dinner for your family at a restaurant and you get taxed, or if you don't wanna spend that kinda money, you go to the local grocery store and buy cheap there, you still get taxed. If you are lucky? Enough to own a house, they tax you on that, as well as the land you "own". Pack of smokes to calm your nerves from all this taxation? They tax the shiat out of you for that. Decide to wisely invest what little money you have managed to save? And you actually manage to make some kind of profit on your investment? Capital gains tax. Win the lottery? Wow, congratulations on your being so lucky. The unlucky part is, the tax rate for winning the lottery is higher than any other kind of tax, and they will take about 1/2 of what you get. Not so lucky.

I hear this every F***ing time when an arguement like this comes up and it drives me nuts because of how simplistic it sounds.

And people wonder we're in the fiscal shape we're in.

Get rid of the income tax and most of the pork goes away. They'll still fund stuff via inflation, but kill the income tax and you eliminate many of the BS military contracts and social welfare programs that enrich middle men and do nothing for the poor.

I would mind less about taxes if they were used fairly.  More things need to be put to a public vote.

Also, all you shiat cities can stop sending me letters to pay "unpaid taxes" from 5 and 6 years ago where I didn't even live at that time.  I don't care that you are going bankrupt and will do no research ahead of time and harass anyone who you think might possibly owe you money in the hopes they will just mindlessly pay.  Fark you a whole lot.

Forgot one, if you are lucky enough to get a "end of year payroll" bonus, the government considers that a "gift" from your employer, and to help you celebrate your good fortune, they tax that at a higher rate.

If every worker was required to compute and pay his own taxes quarterly, in the manner of a small business, America would experience a taxpayer revolt that might sweep away a good deal of government bloat.

Oh, that shiat again. Reagan tried that when he was governor of California. There was no state withholding because, as he famously said, "Taxes should hurt." And then, wouldn'tchaknowit, it turned out Reagan wasn't paying any state taxes thanks to a fun loophole (Step 1: Buy a failing farm/ranch, Step 2: Don't do anything with it, Step 3: Claim a huge loss on all the crops you didn't grow, Step 4: Profit).

2013-02-03 12:37:20 PM
The result of the 16th Amendment wasn't so much higher taxes as it was centralization.  I wonder how much things would have been different if so many of the services for which we now look to the Federal Government had stayed in the domain of the states.

While Congress is full of corrupt, small-minded half-wits, most state legislatures are even worse.  But it's likely easier to solve corruption and incompetence problems on smaller scales than on larger ones...so who knows.

ok
fine
let's get rid of federal income tax.
No more money from the feds going to the states. Money which states used to get from the fed can be raised with local and state taxes.
but we cant replace that lost federal revenue with a national sales tax. that would just be cheating.
let's just increase corporate taxes!!! they would never raise prices to the consumers.

it is cute watching people complain about taxes. ignoring what they actually get from paying taxes.
pick 5 countries which you would be willing to live in. 90-100% chance that they all pay higher taxes.

idiots

What are you talking about.

Having the poor and elderly die off would do wonders in freeing up money that would've gone to keeping them alive.

2013-02-03 12:39:02 PM
So, as the article suggests, the income tax was intended to tax ONLY the wealthy.  We've certainly screwed it up, it's now taxing over 50% of the population.

It's time to fix that.  The top tax rate needs to be over 90%, and income taxes shouldn't even kick in below $75k/year.  Let's make it what it's supposed to be, a tax on those who can afford to pay it.

"I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization." Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

I don't like having a smaller paycheck, but if that smaller paycheck comes along with vastly increased quality of life, including:

* roads and basic infrastructure
* reasonable government services, like fire & police
* affordable health care

In fact, I would actually take double the taxes, if it came with 1/2 the debt and 100% fewer wasteful and useless overseas wars.

2013-02-03 12:40:07 PM
When you add up federal income tax, state and local income taxes where applicable, sales tax, property taxes, capital gains taxes, and the back from the dead estate tax, and then consider what the average taxpayer gets back-- we're getting shafted. At least in Europe you get a socialist state. Here you get a quasi socialist system while the insiders get rich.

They should pay the amount proportional to their share of the wealth, NOT the amount proportional to their share of the taxes. If you want an actual number, that should be 80%.
