These are just a few of the musicians who have died in plane/helicopter crashes.  They were all flying in small/light aircraft.  Don't fly in small aircraft. Farking death traps is what they are.

Only when the pilots get sloppy, careless, or out fly their abilities.

homelessdude: 21-7-b: are you sure? because it seems like the live version of american pie goes on for longer than 54 years

Length
8:33 (LP)
4:11 (Single Part 1)
4:31 (Single Part 2)
8:30 YouTube Video

it is an obnoxiously long song though, that is for certain.

On a related note, I worked a DMcL concert years ago (1981) as a tech. Everyone in the band and crew were really cool.

DMcL was pretty much an arse.

You'd probably shoot yourself if you listened to Alice's Restaurant

THIS

It's almost like he walked into the recording studio with no ideas at all and just made it all up in there

It looks to me like he was only interested in making things rhyme.
The lyrics make no sense.

They make sense. You just have to know the references. It's about the transformation of the culture from the 50's to the 70's.

LOL! Over the years I've heard literally dozens of theories about what the song means. The ambiguity is part of the appeal. I hear that some guy even wrote a college thesis on it for his masters in Psychology.

This. It's basically a "get off my lawn" song.
