Just your average high school posturing.  Unfortunately, some idiots never mature past it.

What flag is that?

Also, what specific model AK is that? I don't want "Hungarian"  I want Bulgarian SSR-85C2.  Details people.

So, they can't lock down the desktop image?
This is the same sort of adminstrator that puts software on school-issued computers, suspend kids that try to disable it, reveal it on their own, try to delete and destroy any incriminating information, blame the tech support, then settle with NDAs.

I like it. Give the student an incentive to learn to hack that would not have even bothered before.

It's a useful skill to know. If you are good at it, it can pay well.

The flag?
Yugoslavia.
Kid's got more problems than a gun fetish.
He's into defunct Soviet-era states.
What's next? He going to develop a taste for crappy cars and manly women?
Get him to therapy, STAT!

Monday comes and he has a nice new wallpaper.

A Jack Daniels label.

Fark you teach; I;m not threatining nobody.

McClaine said he read the guidelines but does not consider the picture threatening to anyone.
Of course he doesn't. It's why our society is eating it's self.  We tolerate murder and violence hell, we worship it.  As a kid I had some toy's guns, I also had a kids printing press and a bicycle though

Maybe it's this kind of zero-tolerance garbage that makes people want to shoot up schools?

I don't know. The stupidity is enough to make you want to shoot someone, though.

The songs we all sang on the school bus in the 70s would get us thrown in Guantanamo today.

I wonder if it would have gotten the same reaction if it was an AK against an American flag.  Or an AR.  But those AR's are black and scary.  I wonder if it'd been just an early 1900's Russian holding a Mosin Nagant that they'd freak.

Man, I had some messed up shiat in my notebooks in highschool.  In grade school I was fond of drawing exploding dinosaurs.  It moved on to weird wrinkly bloody faces in highschool.  Then photography came along.  Now I'm in the tech field and my artistic desires involve hand drawing snack foods and captioning them with a typewriter.  What the hell?

I got nothin'

We're missing a critical piece of information. Was it a "MILITARY-STYLE" weapon? I'm shocked that this journalist did not use the meaningless gun buzzphrase of the month.

It's the flag of the old Cold-War-era Yugoslavia.

What if he printed the photo in a 3-D printer? Ever think of that? We could all have died. Everyoneofus.

With this said... Are military recruiters going to be allowed on campus with recruiting posters of M-16's?

2013-02-02 09:27:15 PM
Clearly he was waiting for an opportunity to print that AK out on the schools 3D printer.  Then what smart guys?  Yeah, mayhem.

I can't wait until some foreign exchange student from Mozambique gets suspended for displaying his cultural pride.

HMS_Blinkin: SilentStrider: While the kid should have been smart enough to know better, this is asinine.

This.  I am hardly part of the pro-gun faction here on Fark, but the school's action is just silly.  If they don't like his background, fine, it's a school-issued computer so he should change it if they ask.  But the school never asked or even warned the kid he might be violating any rules.

Just another case of power-tripping school admins.

To be fair to the admin, I would think there was some sort of TOS that is signed when they hand over the PC.  So if there's a violation of the TOS then they have to follow the provisions of the TOS

2013-02-02 09:31:29 PM
How is this supposed to help anything?

Either it's idiotic and pointless, or it's idiotic and the kid's at risk in some fashion and suspending him out of the blue isn't going to help that.

2013-02-02 09:33:09 PM
Up next?

"We've learned that you have been daydreaming about guns in study hall. You're suspended!"

2013-02-02 09:34:49 PM
Wow, talk about going overboard. Yes it was dumb for him to do in today's environment, but expulsion isn't going to accomplish anything. Confiscate the computer, load a fresh image on it and lock it down so he can't make changes.

For a country who's national anthem mentions rockets and bombs you'd think they'd be a bit more tolerant about a picture of a gun.

Where you see a "zero tolerance" policy implemented, it is merely an indicator that wisdom and judgement are already lacking.
The zero tolerance movements you see are mostly futile attempt to restore balance to a system that's already out of control.

THIS. I can only imagine how school admins would react to Smear the queer. Expulsion & mandatory sensitivity training for sure.

Students, parents and staff are on edge, and the daily news delivers more reasons for caution.

Shut up, school official, you cock.

You can't justify punishing innocent people and completely irrational overreaction to nothing because of something you read about in the newspaper that happened elsewhere. Right and wrong are not subject to going in and out of fashion.

You coont.

2013-02-02 09:44:37 PM
I hope the gun fetishists in the thread take note that the vast majority of posters in the thread think the suspension was silly.  Remember, gun fetishists: those who are for gun control are generally using logic and reason and aren't responding to a rush of blood to the genitals.

The government is the problem.  They can't do anything right.  We need to strangle it in the bathtub.  But it should be allowed to kill people.

You are so right, we are implementing logic, reason and proper shooting skills which also includes holding our breath, letting a little breath out and squeezing the trigger. That is how I was taught to hit the target by  my Dad, the Boy Scouts and the United States Army
Who taught you?
